With a minumum of 100 ABs, the player with the highest OPS is......?

Can anyone guess without looking it up?

I'm going to guess Theriot just because he's been red-hot since his callup.

But that's probably too obvious- so I'll go with...

Does Z have 100 at bats, lol? J/J Gotta be Ramirez.

I don't expect that Theriot can or will continue this torrid pace he's been on, especially when you look at what he did in the minors. That being said, what if FOR ONCE, the Cubs got lucky with a player that just defied the odds and performed at the major league level much better than the minors? I guess I don't know enough about scouting a player to know if this kid is real. I know it's unlikely, but the sample size keeps growing, and his numbers aare not falling off a cliff. I surely don't expect him to be the next Utley, but solid production for cheap would be wonderful. For those in the know.....What does Ryan have to do (if even possible) to win a starting job for next year? Do we just chalk this up as luck and continue to search for a 2B?

even if he doesnt keep up his current pace, he is still very vaulable imo. he bunts well, walks alot and steals bases. most likely he's not going to be able to sustain a .900 ops for a full season but i dont see why a .750+ would be out of the question. he would make a good leadoff guy if the cubs get a guy like mathews jr instead of resigning pierre. the cubs also have mike fontenot (who also gets on base alot and hits left handed) in iowa who can play 2b & 3b. i would rather see mike as a utility player & the riot as a starter.

Personally, I don't understand all this "Theriot is playing above his threshhold" stuff. About the only part of Theriot's game that is misleading is the 3 HR he has already.

The guy is a ballplayer. He is playing the same way as he did at LSU (just a different level). I am convinced that he has matured at each level, and would be a solid starter on this team.

I love the way he plays, and the pessimism associated with the fact that he came up and MADE Dusty play him every day is starting to get on my nerves. Maybe, just maybe, the Cubs system spit out a good Major League Ballplayer. It is time that one of our prospects actually played to his potential, or heaven forbid, above it.

Embrace The riot.

Highest OPS since the ASB:

Ramirez - 1.040

Murton - .937

Theriot - .935

Nevin - .908

Barrett - .855

Theriot has that OPS now in about a quarter-season's worth of at bats. Tell me you wouldn't like that quarter-season at second base even if he didn't do so well in the other 3/4 of the season.

Between September 2004 and April 2005 Neifi had about the name number of at bats and about the same OPS.

Between September 2004 and April 2005 Neifi had about the name number of at bats and about the same OPS.

We had this career line to base Neifi off of:

.291 .333 .444*

274 .313 .382*

.280 .307 .403*

.287 .314 .427*

.298 .326 .445*

.241 .277 .302

.236 .260 .303

.256 .285 .348

.232 .276 .295

*Colorado

Much more proof that Neifi was indeed playing over his head. His only decent years came in the inflated Colorado.

Yes, Theriot will not match these numbers and he may struggle to put up a .700 OPS. Lets look at his minor league numbers progressing:

.204 .341 .252** 2001 Daytona

.252 .335 .313** 2002 Lansing

.259 .353 .318** 2003 Lansing

.236 .351 .270** 2003 West Tenn

.273 .367 .342 2004 Daytona

.304 .365 .391 2005 West Tenn

.304 .367 .379 2006 Iowa

**Switch hitter

Theriot has for the most part, improved every season of his career, specifically when he gave up switch hitting. He technically had a slight drop off this year(10 OPS), but thats ignoring what he has done at the major league level.

Theriot is plain and simply not comparable to Neifi. Thats not to say we should let Theriot start (barring Ramirez bolting and going into a youth movement, I dont think we should), but you should come up with a better reason, because your current one is weak.

My reason for not wanting Theriot to start has nothing to do with Neifi. It's because we can and should do better. The comparison to Neifi was just pointing out how pointless the "nearly a quarter of a season" claim was.

if theriot was hitting .200 with a .600 ops now instead of .322 with a .910 you wouldn't be saying that it was pointless to not consider him as a starter because it is only 120 ab's. it's not theriot's fault that dusty wouldnt play him until most of the season was over. the fact is that he has performed spectacularly in the majors with the opportunity he's gotten. if the cubs dont consider him as a starter next year just because of his career minor leauge #'s they would be doing the team a big diservice imo.

while I think it would be great to give theriot a shot, what do you do if he starts to flounder? whats the backup plan?

Bynum of course. You have to pay more attention stitch or you're out of the Jim Hendry Fan Club.

I don't understand this sentence.

If Theriot had a 600 OPS this season it would be more in-line with his career line. But I'd still like the guy to get chance to be a bench option. His good performance in the majors has been a nice thing, and certainly positively influences my opinion of what he's capable of in the future. But I was responding to a strange post about being happy if he did that for a quarter of a season even if he did worse the rest of the season.

Neifi did just as well in quarter of a season, but he sucked the rest of the time, and it negated all the good. Being good for quarter of a season and not good for 3/4 is not acceptable. And I don't get why somebody was trying to claim otherwise.

Luis Castillo and Marcus Giles will both be free agents after the '07 season, and I would think that both will be available mid-season.

I like Theriot, but there are too many better options at second who will be available on the FA market. Let Theriot be the middle infielder on the bench next season. He'd be a valuable player in that role.

And if Cesar is the starting SS, the backup MI will likely see a lot of playing time.
