are we talking about the media poll or coach's poll here? Why would the coaches give a fig about making a 1 vs. 2 matchup this week?

The coaches already had Texas at 2. They dropped ND from 3 to 5, with Auburn and USC leapfrogging them instead of Texas and USC in the AP poll.

You're going to hear all about Notre Dame tradition, you know what? It doesn't mean a thing unless Knute Rockne leaps out of the ground and tackles you. When you put those black shoes on tomorrow, and you put on that jersey without your name on the back and you put that plain helmet on, that's tradition. Penn State tradition!

Go Penn State!

Go Big Ten!

Nothing would make me happier then to see ND go 0-for-the Big Ten.

It will show everyone the REAL reason why they didn't want to join.

I'm surprised so far at the lack of media play for this kind of thing. Paterno doesn't exactly hide his dislike for Notre Dame, but if you asked the average fan, they wouldn't know what you were talking about. You'd think it'd be a bigger story that the 2nd winningest coach in big time college football history hates the "university of college football in America" (Kornheiser's words), especially when they are playing on Saturday.

Joe hasn't spoken to the media this week and isn't allowing his players. Sometimes the national media doesn't have a clue about college football or more "local" stories, but what they were saying yesterday is true. Paterno has been asked a lot about Charlie Weis, Notre Dame's turnaround, Notre Dame mystique, etc. It's pretty insulting to a guy who has been in college football since Weis was in high school, and built a great football school with a mystique of its own from the ground up.

It's not insulting. You don't think Weis has been asked a hundred times about Paterno and the Penn State program? He mentioned at least three different times in a press conference yesterday that what Paterno has done is amazing and joked that he's "too old" to ever touch what JoePa has accomplished.

And for the record, Joe, Notre Dame doesn't have names on the back of its jerseys or any insignia on their helmets either. Just making sure you know. Besides, uniforms alone have very little to do with tradition.

If he, or anyone for that matter, believes that Penn State has half the history of Notre Dame then he really is completely senile.

Well, the statement of half is stretching it, but Penn State certainly does not have the overall history of ND.

Overall Record

ND-811-266-42 (75.3 win percent (excluding ties))

Penn State-771-339-42 (69.4 win percent)

Overall Titles

ND-11

Penn State-2

Titles Since Paterno took over

ND-4

Penn State-2

When comparing overall history, Penn State has been a very good football team-not in the class of ND though-Penn State has the 3rd best overall winning percentage in the Big 10.

Now-does that give ND an advantage on Saturday? Of course not-but there are significant differences in their overall histories.

I really don't feel like explaining, AGAIN, that there were a billion factors coming into play into that decision, many of them that weren't even sports-related. But why let facts get in the way of a really good bias?

Penn State got robbed in at least two years IMO too, 69 and 94. In 69 they had Franco Harris AND Lydell Mitchell....wow.

I hope JoePa personally lays a hit on Brady Quinn this Saturday.

I hope Kansas can actually win more than 6 games in the absolutely awful Big 12.

Hey, me too. I didn't know you were a Kansas fan!

FWIW, I submit 1993, when FSU and ND both finished 11-1, ND beat FSU in head to head play, and the pollsters gave it to FSU under the little-known "if one coach already has a title, then give it to the other out of sympathy" clause. Wouldn't have been so infuriating except that in 1989 Miami and ND were in the same situation (Miami beat ND, two one-loss teams) and they gave it to Miami, as well they should have, then reversed their logic four years later.

My problem with that is that Penn State won every game each of those years. That's all you can ask and if you lose a game you get what you get.

PSU went undefeated in 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1994 and didn't win a national title in any of those years.

Ok-even if you give PSU a title in every one of those years and don't give ND any of their disputed titles they don't have, ND still has 11 titles to PSU's 6.
