I had title aspirations.

I don't anymore.

But kudos go to Michigan, as I said in my post in the regular college thread. They just played a sterling football game and shouldn't have a problem finishing 2nd in the Big Ten. A potential matchup of unbeatens between OSU and Michigan is pretty enticing at the moment.

so, where would you rank ND after that loss today?

I would have had them no higher than 20, but I'm not going to complain about being ranked 12 for obvious reasons.

What's going to be funny is if the Irish lose next week and Penn St. wins...guess who will be ranked ahead of your ND team?

Couldn't be prouder of The Big Blue. Finally back for real.

What would be funny about that? It is something that happens every year to many different teams.

I agree and it's annoying as heck.

Yea it is. Really the whole poll system is annoying to me. I can't think of one year where there has not been some sort of controversy. I don't offer a solution, but something should be done. Maybe get rid of preseason polls would be a good start

If you have a playoffs it makes it almost moot like it does in basketball.

Yea, but that will never happen, which is unfortunate. I once did a speech on instituting a playoff system, and with 16 teams it can be done without any income loss to the schools or bowls. Unfortunately the NCAA seems to think that the current system is adequate.

Because the ones with the money will continue to keep the money. I hate the poll system and it ties right in with the BCS because the polls have so much pull in the SOS.

You'd really only have 3 BCS bowls then instead of 4. If you do the 16-team tourney bracket, both of the national semifinal games (the final 4) as well as the national championship could be BCS bowls, but that leaves you one short unless you have the 3rd place game a BCS bowl.

Even if you did a rotating system, one of the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, or Orange Bowl would be screwed every year in the 16-team tourney. I think that's probably the big holdup.

Can you detail more how it wouldn't cost anyone any money? I haven't researched the topic, but I'd have to imagine that a playoff system where your team isn't guaranteed to make it to the next game(plus the cost of traveling and paying for tickets to two different bowl sites) would cause lower attendance at later bowl games.

I really wish I could and will try to find the info at some point soon. I did the speech about 4 years ago and don't remember the details. A lot of it was based of off a web site that did extensive research on it. I will see if I can find a link to that.

It doesn't seem to hurt basketball does it? I think the site would sell X amount of tickets to the general public and Y to the 2 teams involved.

Basketball is a different animal though.

Yes it is but they both have their own fanatics. I guarentee if Nebraska is in it they will sell out where ever they go if they are in the playoffs and many teams like them. Also, the more the team wins the more of a chance their fans will say, I gotta go. I've seen it here many times and I don't think it would be that different for football.

Example:

Mizzu is number 16 and beats #1 Ohio State in game one. Now you are playing #8 Louisville, are you going to find a way to go if it's in Texas? Florida or Arizona? You win that game and now your playing #4 Auburn do you go? You win and now you're playing #2 USC for the Championship. Do you think Mizzu fans will find a way to get to that game heck or highwater?

Yeah, they are different animals but I think fans would find a way to make it work along the way.

Hey, let me enjoy this week, ok? You guys have been dancing all over us for a few years now, gloating all the way (and rightfully so, particularly last year). I want my 15 minutes! :D

C'mon man, us guys have stayed in our thread and left the college football thread ND free. Please don't ruin the only sanctuary we have left. :D

Our pitcher made a heck of a catch for a TD. I think it was obvious that Michigan put a priority on stopping Smzardja(sp?) There was some speculation on this board after the Cubs drafted him that he would be a top ten NFL pick. I didnt see it then and certainly dont see it now.

I actually have a new found respect for Brady Quinn. Kind of reminded me of Cool Hand Luke when he was fighting Dragline. He was getting pummelled (and was playing poorly) and kept getting up even when it was obvious that they were beaten. If he shows that kind of perserverence he will become a successful NFL player

The Blue-Gray Sky blog made an offhand comment in their review of the game that Samardzija's lack of success this season has something to do with the Cubs. I'm not sure I buy it, considering no one has played up to expectations this year yet.

Really? I thought Quinn looked rattled and overmatched.

Agree on Samardjia----he's not top 10 calibre, IMO. I think he could still be an effective NFL player though.

I agree. Getting back up even when you're getting beaten sounds more like a description for Jon Kitna than a franchise QB.
