Ok-even if you give PSU a title in every one of those years and don't give ND any of their disputed titles they don't have, ND still has 11 titles to PSU's 6.

I wasn't making the argument that PSU has a more lustrous history. Just pointing out the number of times they've gone undefeated and been screwed since Paterno took over as head coach (1965).

You're going to hear all about Notre Dame tradition, you know what? It doesn't mean a thing unless Knute Rockne leaps out of the ground and tackles you. When you put those black shoes on tomorrow, and you put on that jersey without your name on the back and you put that plain helmet on, that's tradition. Penn State tradition!

--Joe Paterno

If he, or anyone for that matter, believes that Penn State has half the history of Notre Dame then he really is completely senile.

another golden domer crawls out of the woodwork

I'm not quite sure what that means. I grew up within an hour of South Bend, I'm Irish, and I've watched every ND game thats been televised over the last 15 years. If you're implying that I'm some sort of bandwagoner, well, that's insane.

Go Penn State!

Go Big Ten!

Nothing would make me happier then to see ND go 0-for-the Big Ten.

It will show everyone the REAL reason why they didn't want to join.

I really don't feel like explaining, AGAIN, that there were a billion factors coming into play into that decision, many of them that weren't even sports-related. But why let facts get in the way of a really good bias?

Notre Dame jealousy makes me laugh.

Well, then can we have pride in any professional team?

School pride doesn't always have to come from being an alumnus. Instead, it can be passed down from generation to generation. For example, my family has been Notre Dame football fans for 50 years or more. I grew up dreaming to go to ND. I would have gotten in if I applied, but I ended up choosing another direction because it was not the best school for the majors I wanted to take. Does that mean I have to abandon the pride in the football team I had enjoyed since as soon as I can remember? I don't believe that has to be true.

While we're throwing out stats about these two teams, some interesting ones from today's CDT:

- The all-time series between ND and PSU is knotted at 8-8-1

- Penn State is 8-5 against ND under Paterno

- Today marks the 5th straight game in the series in which both teams are ranked in the top 25

- Notre Dame is 93-18-5 in home openers, but has lost its last two

- Penn State is 44-10 in non-conference games since joining the Big 10 in 1993

- Penn State hasn't defeated a top-10 team on teh road since bating #8 Miami in 1999

Posted
- Notre Dame is 93-18-5 in home openers, but has lost its last two

Dunno where these stats came from, but ND beat Michigan in their 2004 home opener, so actually they just lost their last one.

That's ridiculous. Do you have any idea how many people on this board root for college teams they didn't attend? You might as well say you can't root for the Cubs unless you've tried out for the team.

Hey, I'm not saying you can't root for a college you didn't go to. I'm happy when Northwestern wins, as both my parents attended there, and I grew up in Evanston. And I understand when a person has an allegiance to his respective state school. But part of me finds it a bit silly when non-alums get all crazy about a school they didn't attend. And I often wonder if all these non-ND alums would love the Irish so much if ND didn't happen to be really good most of the time. Probably not.

But that's cool. We all have different reasons for rooting for sports teams. Picking ones because they're good maybe isn't such a bad idea. Hey, Yankees jerseys are on sale right now, too. Maybe all you fake Domers should get 'em while their hot.

My dad went to Notre Dame, my mom lived 3 miles from the campus for the first 22 years of her life, and everyone in both extended families roots for Notre Dame. If I wanted to jump on a bandwagon I'd root for Florida State, or Michigan, or another of those teams that have been to about 35 straight bowl games, as opposed to a program that hasn't even won a bowl game in 12 years. I can't speak for every ND fan on here, but I could not have chosen another football team even if I'd wanted to. You might want to learn something about people before you start throwing out accusations like that next time. Just a suggestion.

Good luck to Kansas. Talk about a schedule! Northwestern State last week and NOW Louisiana-Monroe! Well, I guess when you're one of the big boys you have to be willing to play all-comers. Scheduling Toledo next week, though, just seems like a suicide mission!

School teams are professional?

By his logic, you can't root for a school you didn't go to. (Which is dumb to begin with, considering that most alums don't play a down of football for their school and simply attending the school doesn't make them anymore of a fan than anyone else). So, I guess you can't root for a team you don't work for or play for, including the Cubs. It is the same logic.

No he didn't. His "logic" consisted of saying "I don't understand why people get crazy about schools they didn't go to" and "most ND fans are bandwagonners." Come to think of it, that's not even logic. That is just spewing nonsensical opinions without any backing for what is said.

That said, its fun bantering about college football with a Kansas fan and a UCLA fan. I just can't wait to see which of those two teams we play in a BCS bowl game!

Let's see who's talking on Oct. 21st.

I am a Penn St. fan (obviously) and didn't go there. But I moved to State College in 1986, and my first full season of watching college football was Penn State's National Championship season. Though I moved to Chicago to go to school, I never stopped rooting for the Nittany Lions. Plus, I went to DePaul for undergrad, and since we had no football team....well, the allegiance to PSU only grew.

Yes, I went to Northwestern as a grad student, but it's just not the same as being an undergrad somewhere. You aren't part of campus life, you don't really go to sporting events, etc. (you don't have time). I did see Penn State play Northwestern in Evanston, however, which was great fun.

So yeah, saying you are somehow less of a fan or a "fake" fan of a college team when you didn't go there is absurd. The only time it annoys me is when someone claims allegiance to the schools that happen to be good that year. "Me, I love the Yankees, Duke Blue Devils, Notre Dame and Patriots. You?"

Both of my parents went to the University of Minnesota so I like to pull for them even though I know they're going to start off the season 5-0 and then lose to O$U, Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

I don't care who you root for or how you became a fan of them - it's just funny to see a bunch of ND fans all over the map (especially in So Cal - they were quiet in the '90s, suddenly were USC fans the last few years and are now ND fans again).

Well, sometimes you can't control where you are on the map, right? There aren't many bigger Cubs fans on this board than you, and no one questions your loyalty as a fan in CA.

My main rankling is with those who I mentioned in parentheses. Sorta like that comparison derwood made to Yankees/Duke/etc. fan.

And my Cub fan-ness hasn't been questioned, but my Bulls fandom has been questioned on this board. :D
