I'm pretty young cubs/baseball fan - started watching in '99 when I was 11 or 12. So to land Girardi as manager of the Cubs would be very cool, if for nothing else, the novelty factor.

I don't know if he's the right pick, but he seems like a classy guy and he's the first player I remember watching play to become a manager, so it'd be cool if he came back home.

This behind the back bs the Marlins baseball department is pulling looks very bad. Any manager coming in has to think twice about that organization. Whatever in game decisions are made, you're going to be held accountable in a very public venue. That's not how baseball should be.

Girardi may have his problems, but we're only hearing one side of the story through the media.

Just because he's a former Cub and not named Dusty Baker does not mean he's the right fit for the job. He's also a former Yankee, Cardinal and Colorado Rockies, for that matter.

He's doing well with an amazing collection of young talent in a terrible National League. I'd rather look around than settle for bringing Girardi "back home".

ESPN, in their article on the 0% chance Girardi will be back, mentioned

However, the source said the front office is pointing to specific in-game decisions that ultimately may lead to Girardi's demise.

Fighting for a wild-card spot, the source described Marlins management as "shocked" that Girardi brought back rookie-sensation Josh Johnson after an 82-minute rain delay on Sept. 12 against the New York Mets. The righthander left the game four innings later with cramping in his forearm and was later shelved for the season with a strained ligament.

Girardi also was criticized for inserting reserve outfielder Reggie Abercrombie as a defensive replacement in Sunday's 8-7 loss against Atlanta. Florida's 10th-inning collapse was aided by two Abercrombie errors that opened the door for a five-run inning.

Amazing young talent? Is this a joke? Reggie Abercrombie? Dan Uggla (a utility infielder and career minor leaguer before his 2006 anomoly?) Willingham? Mitre? Nolasco? Come on, these guys aren't "amazing talent". Sure, you can say that about Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, Willis, and possibly Amezaga, but not the entire team. Not even close.

Yes, amazing young talent, much more than the Cubs.

Nolasco is having a really, really good year. Uggla is a good 2B. Willingham has a ton of talent. You mentioned Ramirez, Cabrera, Willis, Amezaga. Josh Johnson is really really good. Anibal Sanchez.

Do I really need to go on? They have a ton of talent.

Girardi has shown he can guide a young team very well, even if it's a talented young team. Girardi is not a yes man and being a former backstop and learning from Zimmer and Torre over the years we could do a lot worse than the re-tread names being tossed around here. It's going to take a lot more than Girardi to make this team a contender but it's a start.

Things to make you go hmmm?

Adding fuel to the Joe Girardi-to-the-Cubs rumors, Gary Hughes, the top assistant to general manager Jim Hendry, was in Philadelphia on Saturday, scouting the Marlins-Phillies game

I'm hoping he was scouting Cabrera. :)

Ye Gads, I thought Piniella was already forgotten about! Say it ain't so!

I agree. What's lou going to cost 5 million a year? I'd rather spend that money on players.

Kevin (Manassas): In your opinion, is Joe Girardi the right man for the Cubs? Do you think he can turn them around?

SportsNation Buster Olney: (2:45 PM ET ) Kevin: He's the right man for the job only if Jim Hendry, the GM, wants him. If Jim doesn't want him, he shouldn't hire him, and there seems to be a sense that the Cubs are reluctant. They should not let public pressure dictate this decision; Jim needs to hire the guy he really wants (although his decision to not fire Dusty during this season tells you that maybe he doesn't have the guy -- or can't get the guy -- he really wants).
