Whitey Herzog next Cubs manager? From Stl today.

Saw this and thought I would share.

Writing on SI.com, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated suggested that the Chicago Cubs' next manager could be ... Whitey Herzog, 75. Herzog didn't exactly squash the notion he'd be interested in the job should the Cubs fire Dusty Baker.

"The Cubs would be interesting if you knew those two pitchers would get up off their (rear ends) and pitch," Herzog said, speaking of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. Herzog said the Cubs "have pretty good baseball people over there."

If this happens I guess the new stratagy is to look what Detroit did. Bring in an old manager with past success. I guess as stratagies go it is better than the speed and def one that failed this year.

i remember herzog was on the dan patrick show a few years ago promoting his book. patrick was trying to get him to answer a few questions about the book and herzog was being very stubborn about the whole thing. after a few questions, herzog starts yelling at patrick and hangs up the phone on him. dude is senile.

If the Cubs go the Herzog route, its probably because they're hoping to copy what Detroit did this year, so you're probably right. The nice side effect would be that Herzog seemed to like patient hitters and he valued OBP. Of course the downside is he seemed to value speed over everything else, but I would hope he'd be smart enough to realize that running now isn't as valuable as it was when he managed, especially since turf is all but gone. The one thing I don't know about Whitey, was he a players-manager or the opposite?

I guess the move would work rather well if we're going to load up for a run next year... I doubt Herzog would want to stick around for a mini-rebuilding project.

Cubs have some pretty good baseball people? Since when?

Zambrano, Barrett, Ramirez, Jones vs. righties, Lee (even though he's injured)

That qualifies as "some," doesn't it?

Herzog's talking about the front office/coaches.

Reading isn't my strong suit.

The Marlins used that strategy in 2003 (Jack McKeon), and we all know too well what happened with them that year.

I really thought Whitey Herzog was a great manager. certainly wasnt a players manager. Traded Keith Hernandez because he was a drug user and didnt want him in the locker room. Trade Gary Templeton for being a dumb butt. Actually when Templeton didnt run out a ground ball and the fans were booing him Templeton gave the fans the bird and Herzog grabbed him and pulled him in the dugout. I think he was traded for Ozzie Smith the next day. At the time it looked like a very lopsided trade for the Padres. Ozzie wasnt quite the patient hitter and San Diego was notorious for having a lousy field which caused a lot of errors.

I dont know if he really valued speed. He just took advantage of the hand he was dealt. Not a lot of power. Large stadium. Fast players. I dont remember him having a lot of SBs while in KC.

I would rather have a senile Herzog than a rmblin Dusty

Yeah, but I don't think many of us would want Santo to be the Cubs new manager :)

I thought the Trib just said today that Herzog doesn't want the job

Yes, the Trib did. Bernie Miklasz only gave portions of the quote and omitted the part where he said he would not be interested.

Scratch Whitey Herzog from the list of possible replacements if the Cubs don't bring back Dusty Baker as manager in 2007.

The former St. Louis manager told SI.com columnist Jon Heyman he would he interested in coming out of retirement to manage again but said the unpredictable arms of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood would create a problem.

"I don't know which jobs might become available," said Herzog, 74. "The Cubs would be interesting if you knew those two pitchers would get up off their [butts] and pitch. I shouldn't put it like that, but . . . it has to be a tough decision for the Cubs. But if you take them away, you're starting to scratch your head.

"That Wood may be better as a short man. Maybe he doesn't have the durability you have to have as a starter. I'm sure Dusty and everyone else examined that. They have pretty good baseball people over there, with Dusty, (president) Andy MacPhail and (general manager) Jim Hendry."

If we were considering going the senile old man route, why not go all the way and bring in Earl Weaver?

Now THAT'D be money.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Weaver

Just a warning - there is some explicit content there.

Team speed, for Christ's Sake, you get ****** ****** little fleas on the ****** bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big ****** who can hit the ****** ball out of the ballpark and you can't make any [expletive] mistakes.
