Weaver just gave up a grand slam and now a triple to McCann and Francoeur. Encarnacion dogging it a bit allowing Francoeur to get the triple.

Braves up 4-0 against the Cards in the bottom of the 3rd.

Francoeur tags up....5-0 Braves.

Thanks for boosting my fantasy team Jeff. Keep giving fat ones to McCann plz.

Seconded....Is that a word?

I know it's just one start but maybe - just maybe - the Cardinals' "turn lemons into lemonade" success rate isn't 100% after all...

Maybe you're just comparing it the Cubs ability to turn perfectly good lemons into rotten ones?

That's not intended to be a slam, but when's the last time the Cubs saw improvement from players they've signed?

And in all fairness, the Cards have definitely had their share of bad signings. People seem to remember the drastic turnarounds, but there are none to be seen this season.

Pretty much every good hitter on the team.

Most recently.......Jacque Jones and Ryan Dempster of the players on the current roster.

Derek Lee, Michael Barrett, Aramis Ramirez . . .

All good examples. Maybe we aren't so different, you and I. Hendry has just failed to find a few pieces and a manger who can slot said pieces.

I believe the Cubs could contend next year with a few good signings, maybe a trade or two, and a new manager. I don't think a fire sale rebuild is necessary.

Jones, Barrett, Lee, Walker (the 04-05 versions), Ramirez, Rusch (in 2004), Neifi (late 2004-early 2005). And that's all in the last two and a half seasons. The Cubs' problem is that they don't know when to let go and quit while they're ahead, while STL does.

I'd add Grudz to that list -- his numbers as a Cub compared to his Dodger years after '99. (Also better than his Cardinal 2005 year.)

But I definitely intended my post to be a backhanded compliment to the Cards ... I don't believe it's luck that they tend to get the most out of mediocre players. It pains me to say it but it's superior coaching and a generally higher baseball IQ than the Cubs have.

So how's Weaver working out, Cards fans?

Didn't see that one coming....

( )

Jocketty is an excellent GM, but he goofed on this one. Who would've thought that they could get worse from Ponson?

Well, in an informal poll of Cards fans that were friends of mine right after we picked up Weaver...almost to a person we thought that Ponson was better and we were actually downgrading.

The only reasoning we could come up with was that Ponson was copping an attitude/he wasn't pulling his weight (hahaha) and management was looking to make an example of someone to light a fire under everyone else.

Obviously, it hasn't worked out on any level. I'm hoping he's DFA'd tomorrow or after his next start and Mulder is reactivated.

how do the Cardinals continue to make miracle recoveries from injury?

In an interview with LaRussa it sounds like Jeff is getting one more start to prove he has any value at all. I wouldn't be surprised to see this experiment end in another DFA.
