I'm not sure....but it still makes me cry.

i'm pretty sure it was only speculation. hendry's terrible, but he's not that bad. even if he was, there's no way the reds would have done the deal anyway, so i don't know why that rumor gets so much play around here.

Pardon a bit of hyperbole, but I think this is the most reactive management team in baseball history.

The Cubs where in a pinch when they inserted him into the rotation and now that Guzman looks to throwing the ball well and the return of Prior the Cubs are going to bring Marmol along slowly in the bullpen like they did with Zambrano. Most of the those in the minor league forum seemed caught off guard that Marmol was being called up so quickly. Now after one good start and a couple shaky one's the Cubs are at a luxury to go back to the plan of grooming him slowly out the pen. Being reactive would have been keeping him in the rotation and letting him get pounded only because of the sucess of his first major league start.

because it makes Hendry look like a moron (he often doesn't need the help from insane trade speculation as that though)

No doubt, with the way they use minor league arms.

I think they're reactive overall. A player gets booed -- send him out of town. Pick something the last world series team did and base your strategy around that for the year. And so on. It is very irritating that the philosophy seems to change based on whatever happened last.

Just like teenage girls.

I think the rebellious phase is next.

I don't know if they are knee jerk reactive or delayed reactive. They have a tendency to let things completely bottom out, then wait a while, and then make a move.

Good point, Tim.

Hopefully they rebel by leaving town.

Hendry wouldn't trade Hill for Dunn....

has this ever been verified as true?

Hendry has said it, but he was being hypothetical. I am absolutely certain that Cincy never offered Dunn for Rich Hill, at least not straight up.

the worst part about the "lets copy what the most recent WS champ did" strategy is that they don't do what those teams actually did do to win (ie take walks, jack homers, have healthy starting pitching) but what, say, john kruk may have said they did. for example, he would say that the red sox won b/c of team chemistry and the white sox b/c of sac bunts and speed.

everyone needs to get this story straight.

dunn was never offered for rich hill. bruce miles was on the board one day and said that hendry was so high on hill, that he "wouldn't trade him straight up for adam dunn." this was never a trade that was even close to happening.

It's not like Marmol needs to go to the minor leagues and work on anything. He'll be just fine pitching once every 2 weeks.

The Cubs seriously should trade Hill (though I am glad to see Guzman starting).

No, they should have TRADED Hill, back when everyone in baseball was under the impression he was the real deal. (Wasn't he the most sought after Cub prospect this offseason?) Now they'll be doing their usual move of selling low.

I'd rather see them give Hill one more shot to prove himself. (Though I have my doubts whether he'll ever be as good as Hendry seemed to think.)

have you seen hill's numbers over the past month or so? he's been one of the two or three best pitchers in all of minor league baseball this year, and he's doing it in a great hitter's league.

not every team in baseball is as short-sighted and impatient as you (or dusty baker), and they realize that a handful of bad big league outings doesn't mean the guy's career is over. hill still has a lot of trade value. and i wish they'd trade him.

Agreed. Hill is tearing up the minor leagues right now and I wouldn't be opposed to giving him another shot at the ML level. As I said before with Guzman, the season is lost anyway so we might as well give Hill another shot if we're going to give Guzman another shot. I would tell each that they have 4 or 5 starts so they don't have to worry about having one bad start and being sent back down because of it.

Let's blame/ put pressure on the kids who have been thrown into this train wreck b/c you put all your eggs in the Wood/Prior basket you stupid donkey-

Okay, so I'm confused. I guess Marmol is getting the start instead of Guzman?

cubs.com main headline reads:

"Marmol gets nod as Cubs host Brewers" so yeah, I guess it is Marmol today.

Hendry's obviously never seen Greg Maddux's rookie statistics. If he had he'd realize you need to have patience with young pitchers.

I think most of it has to do with the fact that Hendry and Dusty still have the flicker of a belief that the Cubs might make the playoffs. Hendry because he would have to then admit how badly this team was constructed if we continue this poorly and Dusty because all he seems to care about is himself and his reputation. If they would just get things in perspective, this could be a really good opportunity to see what these young arms really have. You don't have to gut the team, but trade away the chips that make you better, retool for next year, and go into the season with a good idea of what to expect from all these kids (that includes Murton, too...the thought of him sitting with Nevin playing out there makes me sick!)

Hopelessly hanging onto pipe dreams is not going to do anyone any good.
