I think this is a legitimate question. The Cubs have the payroll to contend every year but don't have smart people running the organization and the team on the field. The other teams are what they are - feeders for other major league teams. These teams will likely never have the payroll to consistently contend. They might sign one or two veterans with some name recognition, but never the big splashes needed to contend. So would you rather be a fan of a team who has the payroll but not smart decision making or a fan of a team who you know what your going to get year in and year out? It's depressing knowing several people picked the Cubs to win the World Series in 2004 after the 2003 season, while the Tigers in 2003 lost 119 games and are now one of the best teams in baseball.

I would've said Royals before they hired Dayton Moore. Now I don't know, maybe the Devil Rays after Kazmir and Crawford turn out to be serial killers.

That was a very good hire by the Royals, but he has a lot of work to do with a below than average farm system. I guess my question is, is it better to go in every year with hope and get those hopes slammed or to go into the season with no hope and not get disappointed? In other words, hoping for a .500 season at best?

Aren't the Rays a race of atomic supermen now anyway?

It's worse to be a Cubs fan. At least with the other teams, you know going into the season they're going to stink. Anytime they win, it's a nice surprise. For some reason, we keep getting fooled into thinking there's hope we can compete.

Cursed 2003 season!

Many Pirates fans have seen their team win a World Series

Most Royals fans have as well

The Devil Rays are way too young to have misery.

These teams are small market and always have the hope that they can build a farm system that will lead them to glory.

Because of the Cubs nature of terrible big market spending, they will never have the great farm system other teams have because they will trade away most decent prospects in order to 'compete'

I would almost say it could be an exciting time to be a Royals fan. They have a great ballpark, Alex Gordon, and a great new gm (I am guessing he will be anyways) that will be able to use the yearly high draft picks to build up the farm.

The Royals have a great GM now. The D-Rays have a nice young core. The Pirates are probably the 2nd worst team to root for but I have to think the Cubs are the worst just for the complete stupidity that engulfs the organization.

The Rays. They play in a warehouse. The other 3 are beautiful ballparks to get drunk in.

Go to baseball-fever.com and in the "Ballparks, Stadiums & Green Diamonds" section there is someone arguing that Tropicana Field(the D-Ray's ballpark) is the best baseball park in the major leagues.

The Cubs fans have it worse:

The Royals pre-Moore: They basically didn't care, plus they were cheap.

The Pirates: are cheap

The Devil Rays: are both cheap, but also haven't been in the majors to

know what misery is about.

So yes....the Cubs fan, officially have it "worse" when it comes to cheering for a team.

The Rays might. The Royals are just a slightly older version of the Cubs with a worse farm system.

Hey, Dal....

Another appropriate question would be "Is it worse to be a Cubs, Royals, D-Rays, or Pirates owner?" The Tribune Company has managed to turn the Chicago Cubs franchise into the once-proud Kansas City Royals franchise.....among the worst in all of Major League Baseball. How pathetic is that? Fans come to Wrigley...but, so what? They see a pathetic excuse for "baseball." The entire organization should be scrapped...and, it will be....it is merely a matter of time....and, when. Let's hope it is sooner than later. But, with this pathetic ownership and their lack of interest in winning, it will be two or three years down the road. Pathetic.

Maybe it is worse overall, but I like the Royals top 5 prospects much better than ours.

Today's Cub fan has it much better than fans who rooted the team on from '46-'83. For instance, the great Steve Goodman never saw the Cubs play in the playoffs.

It has been a long time since the Pirates, Royals, and D-rays have flirted with making the playoffs. All we need is for somebody in the front office to discover sabermetrics. Those teams need a miracle ala Florida '03.

If the Cubs don't want to care about winning, then go back to what made it okay to not win. Drop the payroll down to 15-20m, make seats affordable again, and make youth and solid, fundamental baseball the focus and call it a day.

Paying a ridiculous amount of money to watch a team squander runs by poor throws, poor base running, hacking at pitches in the dirt, floating up batting practice to power hitters, etc... is really a poor business practice.

The Marlins and Rays are way more enjoyable to watch than the Cubs. The Pirates and Royals are two pathetic organizations that have the potential to turn things around.

If the Cubs are not currently interviewing MacPhail, Hendry and Bakers replacements yet, it's just one more strike against this organization.

It's an absolute embarrassment. If I was running this team the way they are, I'd turn in my resignation.

The predictions made by some earlier on that St. Louis would fall on their face without Pujols is not showing to be accurate, either. St. Louis scored more runs yesterday without Pujols than the Cubs can score in a whole series.
