Buster Olney was on "Mike and Mike in the Morning" today and they were talking about the likelihood of the Soraino trade. He believes it is likely and that the Yankees and Cardinals are the two possible teams.

He said that Bowden needs to make something happen in order to prove something to the Nationals' upper management and he essentially needs to pull off a coup in the dealing of Soriano.

However, he believes that Bowden will not deal with the Yankees based on his grudege toward them and in particular Cashman. When Bowden worked in the Yankees system he was fired and it was Brian Cashman that escorted Bowden out of the building. Olney cannot see Bowden making a deal with them and Cashman and will stick to his grudge.

The conversation ended there, but obviously that leaves the Cardinals in Olney's scenario. I know it is Buster Olney and it was ESPN/ESPN Radio and he has to say something to keep listeners listening, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

i want soriano to play 2b for the cubs in '07.

I wouldnt mind having Soriano at 2b next year. He is the right kind of guy for Hendry he has speed and power, but one flaw on him is he has a horrible glove at 2b.

That is what Neifi is for

Soriano and Neifi can share second base.

Me too. I've given up hope on the Cubs embracing OBP, so I just hope they get all the .300 hitting/30 HR guys they can get.

First: Soriano has made no secret about returning to the AL (perhaps the Yankees), so I doubt he will be interested in the Cubs, unless he gets an Albert Pujols type contract.

Second: I prefer Eric Patterson at 2B.

Me too, but we need a 2B for '07. Patterson in the bigs next year is a poor idea.

I would trade for sorianos bat anyday, imagine signing him and getting carlos lee in left, there is no doubt we would make it to the world series thatd be the scariest lineup ... Soriano,Lee,Rameirz,Lee,and Jones

150-200 homers from five guys sounds like a good strategy to me.

Soriano would fit right in, but Bowden's asking price always starts high. He'd want Pie, Patterson, and a pitcher (or something like that). If Hendry can dangle the toolsy type of prospect that Bowden consistently overrates, maybe the Cubs could make a deal. Dunno if the Cubs system has anybody like that.

soriano will be so much more productive than patterson over the next few years it's ridiculous.

soriano's pushing a 1.000 OPS right now in the bigs...patterson's pushing .800 in AA.

To be fair, the cost-benefit thing is an issue, and this is the first time Soriano's clearly been over an .800 OPS since he was a Yankee.

It drives me insane that 2nd is looked at as a priority slot that needs to be filled. There's no excuse to not pick up Walker again on the cheap. What more does he have to do to prove how valuable a player he is to this team? Soriano can go fudge himself. The guy keeps mouthing off about how he wants back to the AL pretty much no matter what after this year. Hold onto Walker for another year or two with Patterson in the wings. Focus on fixing the friggin' outfield before we start unecessarily dumping players who have been insanely valuable to this club consistently and for next to nothing. I'd try and upgrade at 3rd or SS before even thinking about 2nd. Walker is the man. THE man. All other men are boys in the face of his beardy goodness.

you're assuming walker wants to do the cubs the favor and take a one year deal when they have no intention of keeping him beyond that. you're also assuming all is forgiven after an offseason of constantly trying to trade him.

i know soriano's shortcomings, but i'm thinking like jim hendry, who obviously has no concern for OBP. and if you're going to throw OBP out the window, you better get someone that can slug .500, which soriano's done 4 out of the last 5 years.

Walker's bread and butter up until now has been one year deals, or similar deals. He seems smart enough to realize what he's gonna get offered by almost anyone at this point.

Walker, you know what you're gonna get and he fills a ton of needs almost definitely.

Soriano is a HUGE toss up in almost all the offensive areas he might fix. Plus, the defense would be even worse.

the cubs need a 5 hitter who's a big time slugger. murton isn't the answer & jones & barrett are better suited in the 6 & 7 spot.

if the cubs are keeping murton in LF, then soriano makes a lot of sense @ 2b. Bat murton 2nd. Not sure who leads off tho.

A second baseman who is on pace to hit 59 home runs this year and knock in 120 runs , 36 steals, 311 average, and a 365 OBP. I know he probably won't finsh with that but he'll still put up MONSTER numbers for a second baseman. I would rather go after him this offseason then have to gut the farm more to get him. If the Cubs have the money to spend this offseason it would be really nice to add Alfonso and Carlos Lee .

That's true. He's gotta show off what he can do after the debacle of moving to DC. And again, he's repeatedly says he wants back into the AL after this year. Sure, maybe money talks, but I say good riddance, go back to the Yanks. We need outfielders before we even think about infielders, unless they're a proven megastar stud.

Two words ...

CONTRACT YEAR.

Juan Pierre is in his contract year, and that hasn't worked out so well for us...:-P

I read somewhere a couple weeks ago that a Mulder for Soriano trade had been discussed. I don't remember where, but I think it was in the St. Louis Post.
