"Just bad luck that we ran into the Marlins when we did. They had lost 7 in a row and you knew it was just a matter of time before they got hot. We were just the unfortunate team that had to face them now."

HA HA! The Cubs have played worse than 7 losses in a row and no team has felt the wrath of the Cubs "break out" moment.

Next excuse, please!

Edit. Whoops, I thought this was a real quote from today's loss. Please ignore.

"I'm going fishing to get my mind off things. While I'm gone, Neifi will be managing the team. He said something about playing all 8 positions at once. If anyone can do it, Neifi can. Maybe he'll save us again this year!"

"It wasn't as hot as it was supposed to be this week. And I think the grass is a little long. But, you got to go out there and compete anyway."

"Its like when you go fishing and the water is ripe for the picking. But then all of a sudden, you've got a bad batch of bait. The fish ain't gonna get the bad bait. They want the good stuff. We just didn't have the right bait, dude."

"We really, yunno. Uhh. You know because I'm not used to loozin. My teams don't looz. I'm just not used to this. When I was with the Giants we never loozed like this. My teams are good. I've never felt this bad"

He actually SAID something like this yesterday.

When asked about his idea to play 8 positions at once, Neifi replied, "I know I can't hit very well, but with my defence at all positions, we should get 4, maybe five outs every inning. Even though we won't score more than one run a week, the other team will average negative 5 runs a game...I have it all worked out on a notepad back in my room. I'm a huge stats nut."

"We are not used to playing before such a small crowd. Not hearing any crowd noise seemed to get us out of our rhythmn. "

"I thought we had turned the corner Sunday, but the long trip to Florida must have taken all our energy. It will feel good to get back in our beds after such a tiring road trip."

After being staked to a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning, Maddux gave up five runs in the fifth after retiring the first two batters. Uggla hit an RBI triple, Mike Jacobs doubled him home and Maddux then intentionally walked Cabrera to get to Borchard.

(HERE IS WHAT HE REALLY SAID!)

"I made the decision there, it was Cabrera or Borchard," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "Cabrera is one of the top hitters around. And then (Maddux) just made a mistake, probably the only real mistake he made. ... Then Cabrera comes up the next time and hits a three-run home run off of Novoa. So you're damned you do, you're damned you don't. "

"When I think about this game...the kind of stretch we're in, you know...and it's like damn, we're not catching the breaks. It's like being in a boat, and having a possum accidentally fall in, and she's got a gaggle of pups suckling on her teats. And you're like...I want to get this possum out of the boat, but she's not gonna let me. She's baring her razor sharp teeth, like little minature toothpicks, and growling and hissing and smelling your fear and all that. And you're like...well, you don't know if that thing is gonna jump up and tear out your throat and feast on your innards. You can't reason with it and I don't know if you want to bash its brains in with a paddle, not sure that will do any good at all. So you tell me? We just need to figure out how to get the possum out of the boat."

Here are some of real quotes from Miles' in the Daily Herald.

Our whole thing is to get back to .500 by the (all-star) break, and then we'll have all our team back. I'll take my chances. We have a bunch of games against the Cardinals. What would have happened if we had been playing the Cardinals during this time?

Yeah, anything's realistic. We're continually reminding them (the players) of that. We're hammering it home pretty good. Everybody's thinking it's over. It's a long ways from over. Remember, last year with Houston, they had tombstones in the paper? Weren't they dead or 'rest in peace' or something? You never know what's going to happen in this game.
