Can't soreness be alleviated with medication? If so, why not go that route and have him not miss that next start?

sure, but then you run the chance of him really tearing something up.

Yeah, I know. I just don't care. Wood's age, salary and impending free agency all make me not give a crap what could possibly happen to him long term. Other teams do it with their pitchers all the time. It isn't inhuman.

You can't be serious....

Uh.....yeah I am. I see other teams shooting their players up all the time to get them back out there. If the Cubs don't want to do that with their young players, I'm fine with that, but at some point they should graduate to being treated like most if not all other major league pitchers when it comes to this stuff.

Why should you risk his health when this team is a bagillion games out of contention. I might concede the point if we were close to first or even above 500. As it is, there's no reason for Wood or the team to risk it.

i think you're confusing what you've seen in real life w/ the movie the program. because i seriously doubt you've seen other teams do that.

Cortisone shots are not common. And its longterm effects can be rather serious, especially for a pitcher.

Kerry Wood. What kind of wood? Pine, of course, because he is so soft.

Dusty confirms Wood may not start Tues. He's sore. After 1 start.

Hear that sound? That's the soft, weak, whimper that is the end of Kerry Wood's career.

Well, he still got paid a lot and didn't play a lot. I'd say it was one hell of a success if it ended today.

At this point someone has to question a guy like Prior and Wood who have to invent reasons not to get on that mound and earn that hefty paycheck.

Someone needs to gut check these guys. Wood needs to pitch or go home and sell cars. Enough is enough. The shoulder is medically sound it's time for him to be like other major league pitchers and pitch through pain or change your mechanics.

Every pitcher is sore after starting.

It's not fair to call them wimps and say they are taking themselves out of games (even if it is true, but we don't know for sure one way or the other). The best thing to do is identify players that get hurt all of the time and get rid of them. You won't get much support though because despite all of the crap we've been served, a lot of people still love Prior, Wood and Nomar. I guess it's the lovable loser thing.

I'll give Pierre and Jones all the credit in the world for at least having the testicular fortitude to take the field everyday even when there struggling and a guy like Mabry plaything through the pain today.

Hardly seems fair to put Nomar in there with those guys...he's actually suffered injuries where it made it impossible for him to play. Hell, so has Prior with the line drive and the basepath collision...those things are just bad luck and are really unfortunate. Wood's injuries, quite honestly, for a guy who has a career of throwing a ball, are the result of someone who just seems like a really stupid pitcher.

or terribly overused when he was really young. his high school pitcher used to send him out there and throw 200+ pitches

First of all, I'm tired of hearing "Kerry's a wuss" or "Prior's a baby". You know what? I want to see YOU go out there and get surgery on your shoulder or get him by a line drive and then go out and pitch. These guys are major league players, they didn't get here by whining and being weak. I wanna see YOU rehab for 6 months. That takes dedication, it takes guts, and it takes class. Which is more than I can say for those who call Prior or Wood "soft" over the faceless internet.

Back on topic, this is bad news, but not horrible. Maybe he sits one outing and then feels better? My guess is that he was a bit rushed getting back, so what if he sits out one game? Also, he could still pitch. It's nothing confirmed. It's the Cubs just being careful, and I'm fine with that.

Wow. That is sad. Eh, you just can't count on Kerry. I like him and everything but if the guy can't pitch just get rid of him. Hopefully we can find someone that can.

sure. pay me 12 million and I'll rehab for 6 months in arizona

I'll give Wood the benefit of doubt on this for now. I'm just worried he is going to phone in the season and try to stay healthy for his free agent push when he throws 3 good games at the end of the year.

I doubt that would be enough. There's too much rumbling on all levels of Cubdom of this being his last year here. He needs to put up a career year or damn near it to either stay here OR make the money he wants/expects with another team. He needs to play for his supper.

Wood has been around enough to know the difference between "soreness" and "pain." After the surgery he's had on his shoulder, to be in enough pain to miss a start in a season when he HAS to play hard to either stay with his team or command top dollar, then he is in serious (in all definitions of the word) pain. I'd love to see him prove me wrong and stick around and be a solid or great pitcher again, but I have a feeling that his career as a starter is done within a year or two, and maybe his pitching career altogether.

I think Wood would get a very heavy incentive ridden contract and NY, Texas and Boston could pony up a lot of cash IMO. I think 3 games would show just enough to wet the big spenders appetite and Woods agent will get them to bid against each other. He's a big name and the fans of the other teams would like this signing, especially Texas.

I still think he's not gonna miss time this year unless he's in real pain. If he is, that's a bad sign. The kind of surgery he got has ended a number of careers. He wants to play and pretty much needs to play.

Excellent post. I second everything you said.

Yea. These guys miss time because they don't have "testicular fortitude." Righttttt..
