He had major surgery to repair his labrum and finally made his season debut as a pitcher. I had surgery on my labrum about 2 weeks after Kerry and made my softball debut the other night as a middle infielder. After playing catch to warm up and throwing a few soft tosses during the game, my shoulder was sore as hell Thursday, Friday, and part of Saturday. Kerry was likely feeling a lot of the same feelings. I'm fine now, and penciled in to play SS tonight.

The moral to my story is, he isn't a wuss or a baby or soft. He'll be fine.

Maybe you're a wuss too!! :D

Why doesn't anybody ever consider the possibility that Wood and/or Prior just might have weak bodies. It's nothing to do with being a wuss, but some people just injure easier, and others may go through a lifetime with no major injuries of any kind. That's just basic anatomy.

It's possible. It's also possible that his arm is not in top top shape following Labrum Surgery and that excessive soreness might last a little bit longer than normal.

I'm with you here. The guy has had one start back from surgery and people are jumping all over this because he's a little more sore than usual. I don't think you can expect someone to come back off shoulder surgery and immediately be 100%. Don't blame Wood, blame the Cubs organization for letting him continue to pitch in meaningless games last season. He could have been over this soreness by now.

I think Kerry's new nickname should be "Easy Money"

What about Prior? He's not even recovering from surgery, half the people don't know why hes injured, and he hasn't even pitched this year yet.

Easy Money and "The Future" since that's when Prior's supposed to be better.

Dempster was on the Score this morning and was asked about Kerry Wood. He just said that Wood was sore, that it's to be expected that Wood would be more sore than usual after 1) rehabbing from shoulder surgery and 2) having made his first MLB start of the season, and that Wood seemed to think that his having mentioned it was completely blown out of proportion.

If Wood starts tomorrow, he'll be in line to start again on Sunday on normal rest since they will be going with a 4-man rotation once through given the off-day on Thursday. Too bad he won't get that extra day off ...

Yeah, Wood will start tomorrow. He didn't pitch on the side, though.

Other news from Cubs.com:

-Miller threw 43 pitches today to rookies in Mesa and everything went well.

-Prior threw 45 pitches on the side and will pitch to rookies on Wednesday. He'll likely have a third outing in Mesa before going on a rehab assignment.

Excellent!! We'll have a full staff back by mid-June....

and we still won't be able to hit a lick.

...Wood wouldn't be pitching Saturday regardless, see the discussion above.

If he's already sore-shouldered -- even if it's just the expected extra soreness due to his rehabbing etc -- I wouldn't mess around with him in a 4-man rotation. Even if it's just once through the rotation, it's at the very beginning of his MLB return and lousy timing.

Some may see this as coddling him ... I don't see the point of pushing a pitcher returning from injury, especially if it may help the team if he can pitch well this season. I'd prefer it wouldn't be Rusch starting, but he's the only alternative I see left on the active roster (though there are rumors that they'll recall Ryu at some point).

Since they have 6 consecutive games after the off-day on Thursday, they'll need a 5th starter regardless by May 30 -- next Tuesday. Does it really matter at this point if Starter #5 pitches on Sunday or Tuesday? Tuesday would be vs a divisional rival. Then again, most of June wll be against divisional rivals.

Can't soreness be alleviated with medication? If so, why not go that route and have him not miss that next start?

sure, but then you run the chance of him really tearing something up.

Yeah, I know. I just don't care. Wood's age, salary and impending free agency all make me not give a crap what could possibly happen to him long term. Other teams do it with their pitchers all the time. It isn't inhuman.

You can't be serious....

Uh.....yeah I am. I see other teams shooting their players up all the time to get them back out there. If the Cubs don't want to do that with their young players, I'm fine with that, but at some point they should graduate to being treated like most if not all other major league pitchers when it comes to this stuff.

Wow. Pretty lousy attitude. I'm glad and/or hoping most fans don't think that way.

I'd rather watch Prior and Wood pitch than Rusch and Hill anyway. This team is done and I just want to take what I can out of this season.
