What he's thinking is that the third baseman [Zimmerman] was way back. If he gets that ball down anywhere but to the pitcher, he beats it out and we have [John] Mabry up next. That's what he was thinking. It's not a bad play, especially because the third baseman was way deep. If he gets that ball anywhere close to the line, he beats that out and we've got a run and we've got runners at first and second. It didn't work.

I'm still not sure if Dusty made the decision or if Neifi did.

Where were the advanced scouts on this one?!!?!?! Were they not paying attention in the first two games of the series?

Ryan Zimmerman is one of the best defensive third basemen in all of baseball. Why the bleep would you bunt it to him...especially with Neifi, who is NOT a speedster?!

if the cubs are gonna lose it's going to be while bunting. it's like how a pitcher doesn't want to get beat on his second best pitch. bunting is the cubs' bread and butter, so if they're going down, they're going down bunting. good for them.

So today I'm watching the game, and talking to my girlfriend on the phone. We were in the middle of deciding what to do/where to go tomorrow and the play that caused this thread took place. I'll try to give you all a recap of how things went.

*Roast sits cool calm and collected on couch, with phone in hand*

Roast:"Well, i suppose we could always go up to..."

*The play happens*

"...WHAT THE &)*)&(&))*)* #(*@%(@$%( $%^&* WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! YOU CANT BUNT FOR #$%^&*((*&^%$# WHAT WAS THAT? IT WOULDNT EVEN HAVE TIED THE GAME WHY IN THE ^&*(*&^%$##$%^ WOULD YOU TAKE THAT RISK. I HOPE YOU . "

Roasts GF: Uhhhhhhh........

Its also worth noting that Jock probably could have had second base for a defensive indifference which would have made an (unlikely) Neifi hit tie the game since the outfielders were playing uncharacteristically deep for a POS like Neifi.

Truthfully, did anyone think Perez had any chance of getting a hit off of Cordero? And because Perez has a pathetic approach at the plate, there was no way he was going to allow Cordero to walk him. Once again, ARam getting hurt hurts us. Only Hendry saw a $5 million value in him.

By the way, I think (I'm not sure, though) Perez is the only player in the modern era to get 200 hits in a season and not bat .300 that season. You know why? Because he had like 700 official at-bats, meaning even in his early days he didn't know how to get on base via BB.

The Nats would've just allowed the tying run to get to scoring position without a play??

I don't think keeping Jones at first was much of a priority. I can't recall if Johnson was holding him on (close) or not.

But you're right, they may have been keeping Jones close to make Neifi hit a gapper to tie the game.

Not only is bunting a piss-poor strategy, the Cubs are really BAD AT IT.

Its really incredible how they just keep banging their head against a brick wall, hoping the next time they throw their head forward the wall will turn into Jello.

One of these days pierre will master bunting 135 feet in the air and become the master of OBP.

What's the old saying?

"Psychosis is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result each time."

There's no accountability anywhere in the organization. Baker is a rotten human being.
Whoa, come on now. A bad manager, yes. A rotten human being, no.

Yeah, I actually what I have seen of Baker's personality. I think he'd be a great guy to hang out and conversate with.

Horrible, horrible manager, though.

Your second sentence is a bit much, but your first one is spot on.

I think it's funny (pathetic) that Neifi's defense is basically, "I can't hit, so I tried to get lucky and let someone else (who also sucks) win the game for us". Then Dusty's response is, "Good stratagy, dude".

Bruce's take.

If any one play summed up the Cubs’ futility of late — they’re 4-13 in May and 17-23 overall — it came in the bottom of the ninth inning.

With runners on first and third and two outs, Neifi Perez laid down a bunt, trying for a hit. Pitcher Chad Cordero fielded the hard bunt and easily threw out Perez at first, ending the game and stunning the remaining fans who were part of a crowd of 40,517.

“Just try to do the best for the team,” Perez said by way of explanation. “I’ve been struggling swinging the bat right now.

“The third baseman was way back. He didn’t have a chance to throw me out. But I didn’t get the bunt. I didn’t get the job done. You know what? If I had the chance to do it again, I might do it again, because that’s my game.”

Perez was in the lineup at third base in place of the injured Aramis Ramirez. The switch hitter went into the game batting .197 with no homers, 6 RBI and a low slugging percentage of .258. Nevertheless, manager Dusty Baker put Perez into the sixth spot, behind left-handed hitting Jacque Jones and ahead of left-handed hitting John Mabry.

“I didn’t want to have all those lefties back to back because they have two pretty good lefties in the bullpen back there,” Baker said.

Baker refused to call Perez’s play a bad one.

“That’s not a bad play, especially with the third baseman — he was way deep,” Baker said. “If he gets that ball anywhere close to the line, he beats that out, we got a run and we’ve got runners on first and second. It didn’t work.”

Neifi's quote is great "I've been struggling with the bat right now." By "right now" he apparently means "for the last 5 years."

Um, didn't Neifi stroke an RBI single up the middle in his previous at-bat? That wasn't enough to help his confidence?
