I love Ozzie sometimes. When asked about the situation on the Northside on Rome is Burning this afternoon. Ozzie said that he had good friends on the organization and hated to see them going through it. That he had respect for Dusty and was a friend of his, and then dropped the bomb:

You cant win the Kentucky Derby without the horses.

I know have much love for both managers on both sides of Chicago! Thanks Ozzie.

I still think Ozzie is a big-time ass, but I'm glad that SOMEONE outside of diehard Cubs fans is pointing out how bad our management is.

Ozzie sure talks a lot about the Cubs.

They are jealous of the loyal fan base. And rightfully so. It has to be difficult to play 2nd fiddle year after year, especially when you have a better team.

I hate the White Sox, but they have good reason to be jealous. Now, if they continue just going about business and putting winning season after winning season together, they'll be able to tone down that jealousy as they build strength in their own fan base.

Just my opinion.

But apparently you can win the WS with a jerk as a manager.

I don't care what Ozzie says. I just don't like him. Never have. Is it a shocker that the Sox win? Is he a genius? No. No way. They BETTER with with that team. You watch the Cubs and it's like you are watching the movie Major League... "Who are these bleeping guys?" Actually, this whole year is like that movie!!

I took that as him saying that we can't win without Wood, Prior, Lee, etc.

Shhhhhh.... There is absolutely, positively no other way to interpret the quote. Every quote from now on is to be interpreted as a potshot at the Cubs. Every quote.

I'm sick of hearing how the Sox are jealous of the Cubs .We have the better fan base, ballpark etc. They won the World Series .Ozzie was asked his opinion and he gave it.

Yeah, I'm with you. I hate everything about Ozzie Guillen, but he keeps talking about the Cubs because reporters keep asking him about it.

Ozzie may be right, but Ozzie has his OWN club to contend with. Ozzie isn't on the Cubs payroll, thus he needs to keep his nose out of the Cubs business. Maybe Ozzie consistancy ripping the Cubs is his way of trying to get the White Sox more press, but...it goes back to the old "you worry about your own team, before you worry about mine team" theory.

Ozzie needs to just "shut the heck up."

See: Above. He doesn't just randomly bring them up.

I'm just wondering if that was his actually quote or the one with the multiple f-bombs and other profanities edited out. I was unaware that Ozzie could form coherent thought without cursing.

They had a soundbite on Mike and Mike (ESPN) this morning and Ozzie was asked what he thought about interleague play and facing the Cubs. They played the bite and he said-

"/bleep/ the Cubs. I don't care about the Cubs. I'd rather play the Tigers, they are in our division."

The point of this is yes, he still drops the F-bombs.

He talks about the Cubs, but it seems to be when he's asked about the Cubs. Kind of like he is with Magglio.

And finally, is it hard to believe he doesn't like the Cubs? It's hard for me to like them right now. Ozzie Guillen, the coarse voice of reason.

A marketing genius, now it will get enough press to be shown on ESPN or Fox, hey maybe even WGN and not one of these stations like wciu or whatever it is in Chicago. It may even generate interest by Whitesox fans to attend one of their games.

I frankly don't care if Ozzie is a jerk. Ozzie wins and is given players that he can win with. All the players he has (save the few that weren't traded for) were players the Cubs could have had at one time or another. I couldn't care less if Bobby Valentine or Lou Piniella managed the Cubs, as long as they win. I hope Ozzie keeps talking, maybe he'll stir up a firestorm so that we get rid of all the players we need to: neifi, pierre, jones, the catcher with the sub .100 OBP, glendon, ohman, bynum...keep talking Ozzie, you are right! We don't have the horses

Ozzie is right on the money. And in a Sports Illustrated interview not long ago, he pretty much said the same thing about the White Sox as to why they had not had more success in the past. He said in rather colorful terms they did not have the horses.

Seems like a fundamental truth to me. How many World Series champions were tremendous overachievers who magically made it happen? Championship teams get there because they have the talent across the board.

Then you have the 1987 Twins who will always prove to be a curious example. They did have the talent but lucked into getting to host both the ALCS and World Series against teams with superior records. And homefield advantage apparently meant the world to that team.

Anyone want to guess how many combined starts the White Sox' opening day rotation made during the regular season?

152

Go back and re-read that again. The other 10 starts were done by Brandon McCarthy.

Because they had a talented and healthy rotation, they steamrolled the competition. They also had a good bullpen (Hermansen and Jenks). Their pitchers managed to stay healthy and productive over the course of the season.

Their offense, on the other hand, was mediocre. Their OBP over the course of the season was .322, good for 24th in MLB (in front of the Astros, oddly enough). Their SLG was .425 (11th in MLB). Their OPS was .747 (16th overall). They scored 741 runs (13th) and hit 200 HRs (5th).

Why bring this up? In 2004, their stats: OPS was .790 (7th), OBP was .333 (15th), SLG .457 (5th), 865 runs (3rd), and 242 HRs (1st). That team didn't even make the postseason.

Just goes to show you the value of good pitching. While the Sox weren't a joke of an offense last season, they managed to downgrade...and still managed to win the World Series in convincing fashion.
