I am not a Baker Basher but with everyone seemingly calling for his head right now who would everyone like to see replace him? Do the coaches go too? Does Rothschild get a free pass?

Hi,

I think Rothschild needs to go and I have for a long time. The pitching has not been good for a while... guys hurt or not performing.

As far as replacing Dusty, I don't know, but I have not been a fan of his style for a LONG time ... most of the time he's been with the Cubs. Not sure who's available out there for hiring. Let's get Brenly talked into it. Heck, Ron Santo!!

Whoever does replace him, if it is in the middle of the season, will be on an interim basis, so I am not to concerned about that right now. It is in the offseason that they will truly replace him, and that is a long and torturous way off.

I'm pretty sure any inhabitant of the Lincoln Park Zoo could light a fire under this team better than Dusty. . . except the penguins, they're just bad news all around.

I'm not certain that an interim manager is going to light any fires under this team. I vote to ride out the year with what we've got. I'm still uncertain of how much blame to place on Rothschild, too. You can't blame him for Wood's issues, as you can't completely change his mechanics. Can't blame him for Prior potentially being soft either. I like the pitching depth we have, and Ive been very happy with the rehab project results of guys like Dempsta and Williamson.

I'd rather have the unknown. With Dusty, you know they won't win. With the unknown, there is a 50/50 chance.

The whole coaching staff has to go in my opinion, except Speier. Speier goes too if he doesn't want the interim coaching job.

If you go that level of a shakeup, you should also get rid of the dead weight on the 25 man roster, even if it means taking a salary hit.

I'm all for hiring as our new skipper, Carrot Top.

He may have some big bats in his trunk of props.

Actually, the guy has gotten freakishly buff in recent years. Maybe he's the extra power bat the team desperately needs right now.

I agree. And I didn't mean to exclude Hendry and MacPhail. They need to go to.

The Tribune opened the coffers more and more each year with this group, and what has it done? Some of the worst baseball in the history of the game.

Fact: You can play this bad for a lot cheaper, which has to be running through the minds of Tribune execs.

And I would also like to put this up for vote:

Players receive their fat contracts after they earn it instead of before they earn it. This getting paid to not hustle, overthrow cutoff men, get picked off base, etc... is for the birds.

Leo Durocher's mouldering corpse.

He couldn't be any worse.

My list of replacements:

1. Davey Johnson. Johnsons has said he's not interested in managing again, but if the Cubs offered him a contract similar to Baker's I think he could be persuaded.

Johnson isn't the easiest person to get along with, but he understands the game, is not afraid of stats and data, and will always be one of the most prepared managers around.

Johnson has a 14-year track record as a manager with one World Series title. He has a career .564 winning percentage with an impressive four seasons above 600, and directed two teams to seasons with over 100 wins.

In his 14 years, Johnson only had two teams finish below .500.

Of those 14 seasons, Johnson has five first place finishes, and seven second place finishes. His teams contend. I don't think we could do any better than Davey.

2. Larry Dierker.

Dierker only managed for five years, and he had winning seasons in four of those five years. He has a nice 533 career winning percentage. I'm not as big a fan of Dierker as I am Johnson, but you could do lots worse than picking Dierker.

3. Fredi Gonzalez

Gonzalez is my favorite of the relative unknowns. Gonzalez is a coach with the Braves and has come through their system. He's bright and has learned from Cox. I think if the Cubs decide to go with an unproven route, Gonzalez would be the man I'd take.

He likely would not be available until at the end of the season.

Johnson also has the distinction of being the only manager fired the same year he wins manager of the year. As bad as the Cubs are managed, it could be worse. They could be the Orioles.

I've put out requests that they consider Gary Varsho if they want to go young. I'd put out a feeler to the Hitman, Don Mattingly because Girardi was so highly looked out for and Willie R. has done a pretty good job with the Mets. I think you have to at least give a courtesy interview to Brenley...I mean, you do have a manager that won the WS on payroll.

That being said, I expect if they fire Dusty before the end of the year, that they'll promote from within for the rest of the season (or hire Brenley) and get serious about a full-time replacement if the new guy doesn't do better in the offseason.

If I'm not mistaken, that was a result of a personality issue between Johnson and the Angelos family. I don't think Johnson would have the same problems in Chicago. He'd be an excellent hire.

I still don't understand why nobody ever hires a collegiate head coach with a ton of national championships (someone like an Augie Garrido)... baseball is baseball.

No, I'm with you on this. I just threw that out to bust on the O's. Not Davey Johnson.
