If he'll play, bring him up. If he'll sit, then don't.

From the link above ... it didn't look good for Pagan, and it doesn't sound very promising either.

Pagan was removed from the game in the fifth inning after injuring his left leg while running out a groundout. He was scheduled to fly back to Chicago Sunday for an MRI on the leg, and the injury could be more serious than a hamstring strain.

"When he came out, there was initial concern about his hamstring," trainer Mark O'Neal said. "There's definitely a moderate hamstring strain. …

"The doctor here also has found some medial joint-line tenderness so we have to rule out any kind of significant knee issue as well."

O'Neal said Pagan possibly has some knee cartilage problems, not unlike the injury Kerry Wood suffered in spring training that led to arthroscopic surgery.

An emotional Pagan was too distraught to talk afterward.

If Jones is out for an extended period of time, then bring up, for no other reason than there is nobody else. If Jones is back on Monday for LA, then Pie will sit and then its completely pointless.

agreed. The kid needs all of the AB's he can get and if he's not going to get AB's up here, it would be extremely pointless for him to be on the big league club.

Jones definitely wasn't limping as bad as Pagan when he came off the field. I really don't think Jones injury was that serious, but who knows.

Jones is expected to be back Monday. I don't see why they wouldn't call up Restovich.

Restovich isn't on the 40-man, neither is Sing. They'd have to clear a 40-man space in order to bring one of them up.

Pagan's injury puts them in a 40-man roster crunch. Pie is the only other rostered outfielder.

If Pagan is going to be out an extended period, they could 60-day DL him and add Restovich to the roster.

Outside of that, there's not a lot of options. I'd hate to bring Pie up to sit the bench, but that might be the only option without exposing someone on the 40-man roster to waivers.

What's the deal with Bynum? Does he have to clear waivers if he's sent down?

He's going to have to make 2x a good impression to make up for the play tonight. I can excuse errors and rookie mistakes, but what was up with him jogging after that ball?

Theriot is on the 40-man. Hairston isn't my ideal RF platoon partner -- especially if it would mean a Neifi/Walker platoon at 2B -- but they could go with calling up Theriot on that basis.

Might as well see what the kid can do for us if Jones is going to be out for a little while longer. But I agree that we shouldn't bring him up to sit on the bench. He needs to be playing and if that means he stays in AAA for now then so be it.

I'd try to pass Bynum through waivers. He might get claimed, but I don't think it would be any loss. He's superfluous on this team and I'm not impressed with him at all. Even if he's claimed, all we gave up was Koronka to get him.

Realized that right after I posted. Of course, we'll see if they end up putting him on the 60-day DL.

Just call up Theriot if they want another bat. They still have 6 outfielders if you count Hairston.

I thought Byrum not running for that ball was a really bad move on his part. Aram staring at his double was just as bad.

They may just call up another pitcher and go with 12 like they have the past couple of seasons. I'd like to see what Aardsma can do.

How many days has Jones been out? At least 5 already right? It seems that they should retroactive him now more then ever so another bench player can be added. With Mabry having a stiff neck and AR hurting a little too. Theriot would be a good choice there. IMO, they should look at derostering some people like Soto/Reyes. They won't be claimed and there would still be the emergency catcher call up if Soto remains.

Also with Dope out with the foot injury, can't he go on the 60 day DL?

Daily Herald article indicates that Baker will be playing Pie if he is called up. There is definitely enough starts for Pie if he is with the team for a short time. Pierre needs a day or two off, Jones has been horrible, and it would be nice to get Murton a day off at some point.

The skipper indicated, though, if Pie were indeed called up, he wouldn’t be spending much time on the bench.

“He’s down there to play,” Baker said. “But we’re here to win, too, soæ…”

If a player on the 40 man, but not the 25 man, is put on the 60 day DL, do we gain the roster spot?
I don't know for sure, but I would think that would be the case. If placing a player on the 60-day DL taks the player off the 40-man roster, it seems to me that would be the case regardless of whether the player is on the 25-man roster.

Hairston can play the OF, too. No reason not to utilize his abilities there. If Jones isn't ready to go, and Pie isn't going to get called up, this is a good use of Hairston. Plus, it gets he and Walker both into the game.

If a player on the 40 man, but not the 25 man, is put on the 60 day DL, do we gain the roster spot? Would we consider this with Dopirak?

Yeah, but I don't think it's a good idea in this particular case. While Dopirak's injury is serious, he'll still only be out for two months or so. When he's healed and ready to come back we'd have a new roster crunch trying to figure out who to remove so Dope can start playing again. In essence, we'd just be pushing the same roster decision two months down the road.

The only time a move like that makes sense is when you don't expect the injured player back until next season or the replacement player is complete roster filler and you don't mind waiving him when your injured player returns.

I don't see why thats a problem. Pushing a decision back 60 days makes perfect sense. Someone else could be injured or the cubs could realize how bad bynum is by then.

I am not for bringing up Pie. Sure he looks great and his numbers thus far are good too, but he has only really had @ 1/2 of a good season above A ball.

To me this would be a move out of desperation and it's only April. I'd much rather see how healthy Jones is and try to tread a little water until Wood and Prior get back.

Right now no one in the division has seperated from the other teams.

Hendry doesn't sound too enthused about bringing Pie up, but is willing to consider it.

I can think of one very good reason to not play Hairston in RF. He's a not a good baseball player for one...

I don't understand the argument against bringing Pie up. The Cubs need to win games and if he is the best available player, then he should be the one to come up. I'm tired of them making up excuses or fans making excuses for not putting the best possible team on the field.

Is there some sort of stat that those against Pie are relying on, that says if Player A is called up to the majors and spends 10 of his 15 games on the bench his career will be ruined? Or such % of players that spent a whole season in AAA ball are better than players who called called up with only a partial season?

Sure you don't want Pie riding the bench the whole year, but if they need someone for 15 days, imo you take your best available player.

Don't days spent on the 60 day DL count as major league service time? Not that it should be our chief concern, but it's not a great idea to start the arb. clock on Dope already so we can have Restovich for 60 days. RELEASE BYNUM.
