I didn't think he had been catching that long. According to the story, he began catching in his second year of pro ball in '96. He's been catching at least part time for about 10 years now.

Yes, but that part of the article is a little misleading. The Expos moved him around from catcher to thirdbase all during his time in the big leagues.

In 1998, Barrett played 3 games at C and 3 at 3b for the Expos.

In 1999, Barrett played 59 games at C, 66 at 3b, and 2 at SS.

In 2000, Barrett played 28 games at C, and 55 at 3b.

In 2001, Barrett played 131 games at catcher. This was the first season that he was used exclusively as a catcher. So, in reality he's only been a fulltime catcher for 4 years.

When looking at his games played by position, Barrett moves back and forth from catcher to thridbase from 1998 to 2000 and doesn't become a fulltime catcher exclusively until 2001.

I would have to say Barrett is one of the more underrated players in the league.

I took part in 3 fantasy drafts with 10 teams each and got Barrett in the 15th round or later in all of them despite Michael being the best hitting catcher in the NL. He's very underrated.

Catchers are also worthless offensively. Most people jump the gun. I saw someone take Mauer in the 4th round.

Yup every catcher is worthless offensively. None of them can hit a ball off a tee. Downright atrocious.

Go to your room and take a nap.

Who was the best offensive catcher last season? Martinez. He ranked 160th among MLB players (using Yahoo's ranking system and standard scoring categories). If you have 10 teams, why would you be taking him before the 10th round? Barrett, our Silver Slugger, ranks 356th.

Typically, your backup outfielders put up better numbers than your catchers do. That's pretty worthless (in the fantasy baseball world).

I think everyone here would be stoked if their corner outfielders reach .825 ops like Barrett did last two years. that goes for Cub, Card, Astro, and WhiteSox fans, three of whom would also be stoked if their centerfielders reached those numbers.

of all players in baseball with 450+ plate appearances last year, Barrett ranked 58th in OPS. I don't play fantasy sports, so I don't completely understand it, but I have no idea why the 58th best hitter in all of baseball is ranked in the 300's

I took Martinez with my second round pick because I am CRAZY! :D

Fantasy scoring is not based on metrics or averages. it's based on raw production totals.

OPS has little bearing if the player doesn't get tons of at bats because a lesser OPS with double the at bats of a better actual hitter can produce more raw totals.

hence, an .825 OPS guy with 400 at bats might produce fewer hits, homers, rbi, etc than a .780 OPS hitter who gets 600 AB. Fantasy BB is scored (usually) on those totals, not the metrics that produced them. Playing fantasy isn't about finding the best "player", it's about finding the most "numbers." So an additional consideration in setting a lineup or drafting players is exepected playing time. A great rookie who is expected to platoon might be worthless in fantasy baseball.

I know he never exclusively focused on catching till we got him...I just didn't think his catching experience, limited as it may be, dated that far back is all.

Exactly! Blanco is why Barrett's ranking is what it is for fantasy baseball. Catchers need more rest than typical players and many managers go with a personal catcher for certain pitchers, therefore a quality hitting catcher like Barrett's value will not be as good as run of the mill offensive infielders and outfielders.

Would any of you rather have Yadier Molina as your catcher instead of Barrett?

No Ill take Barretts plus offense on this team over his average D. This team needs as much offense as it can get and Barrett is the best hitting catcher in the NL.

If the Cubs were awesome offensively at LF, RF and SS...then maybe.

Until that's the case, we need Barrett's bat more than Yadier's glove.

I would prefer to have Molina. I think his .641 CS % makes up for the offensive difference. I think Molina will make up some of the ground offensivelyin his second full season. I really like his potential, given that he is only 23 years old.

I love Yadi but Barrett was way better last year and should be better this year. The .641 CS % is nice but I'll take Barrett's power over that any day.
