Some players may be moving soon, including second baseman Todd Walker, while Tampa Bay shortstop Julio Lugo reportedly is a trade target of Hendry. But Baker insisted Walker is still his starter and possible No. 2 hitter.

While the Devils Rays want a starting shortstop in return for Lugo, the Cubs don't plan on trading Ronny Cedeno, who is slated to start at either short or second base.

Baker said Lugo could play either second or short if the Cubs acquired him. For now, Baker remains undecided about who will hit second, fifth and eighth, repeating the Cubs' mantra that they may not be done dealing.

"There's still some time," he said. "We didn't get [Greg] Maddux [in 2004] until a day before spring training, I hope we don't wait that late."

This is from Paul Sullivan's latest. Should Baker be talking about where he would play Julio Lugo, who plays for another team? Does this mean there is something to these rumors, or does it just mean that Baker has no tact?

Also in that article Prior is quoted saying he is planning on talking with Jom Hendry about the trade rumors. Shouldn't Hendry be the one seeking out Prior to talk to him? This organization really is a mess from the top down.

its obviously a non-issue with prior. what do you expect baker to say when someone asks him about lugo?

I expect him to say "Julio Lugo is not on this team. I don't think it would be right for me to speculate on where I would play a player who is with another organization. I would be glad to answer any questions about our midddle infield which consists of Ronny Cedeno, Todd Walker, Jerry Hairston, and Neifi Perez."

this is dusty baker not bill frist.

That much is obvious.

I'm very surprised Baker talked about where Lugo would play, when he's not even on the team. Whether you like Baker or not as a manager, he usually doesn't step over the line, and make a comment like that to the media.

Are you serious?

I don't have copies of direct quotes, but Dusty is full of "over the line" material, starting with....

Walks clog the bases......

Dark skinned players can handle playing in the sun much better day in and day out....

This thread could get real long if someone wanted to put Dustyisms in here from the past 3 years. He says stuff that's over the line practically every day.

We all know the laundry list of idiotic comments by our manager, and there is no denying that. In my mind, this is different though. It's one thing to have a screwed up philosophy on walks, it's another to discuss where you would play someone who is currently a Devil Ray. These comments could be considered tampering, while is typical comments are just considered stupid.

That's what I'm trying to say. This is different than talking about how his baseball mind works.

I disagree. Chances are, some reporter asked him 'If Lugo did join the Cubs, where would he play', and Dusty answered him. Not a problem in my mind.

I would like to see Julio Lugo's speed, not his defense though. I believe Jim will sign Alex Gonzalez (not the one who cost the Cubs game 6) he will come cheap and plays good defense. Just what Jim is looking for.

Why? Might as well put Neifi at SS if that's the case. We don't need Agonz Part II on the team.

Lugo is a very good defensive player.

Lugo had a .968 fielding% last year, and a .963 the year before. Yeah Shortstops get alot of chances but a .966 carrer % does not suit well for me. Edited by baseball7897

Fielding percentage is a poor way to determine defensive performance. BP's fielding metrics rate him easily above average.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Cubs are still in talks for Lugo.

Meanwhile, the Rays continue talks about shortstop Julio Lugo with several teams, including the Red Sox, Cubs, Mets and Rangers.

From the Red Sox, the Rays, as they have for months, would like to acquire third-base prospect Andy Marte. From the Cubs, Mets or Rangers, they are likely to seek pitching prospects. With spring training a month away, the teams seeking Lugo, as well as rightfielder/DH Aubrey Huff, might get more serious in their interest.

I wouldn't mind Lugo, but he's not really an improvement over Walker. He brings a DIFFERENT set of skills to the mix, but not a BETTER set. Taking into account that Lugo would require players to acquire him, whereas you already have Walker, and considering that Lugo will make twice as much money as Walker, I think the sane decision is to stand pat.

Nonetheless, if Hendry could get him for Jerome and Wellemeyer let's say, I wouldn't cry. I just don't want to overpay for Lugo in terms of players, and if Boston is offering Marte, I think that's exactly what you would have to do to get him--overpay. Take a pass, Jim.

Are you a Corey Patterson fan?

I don't see the particular relevance to this discussion, but yes, I like Corey.

I always found it interesting that the most sabermetrically-inclined poster on this board was named for one of the least sabermetric players (toolsy & potential, poor minor league numbers, minimal results, low OBP, etc.) in major league baseball.

IF (albeit a big IF) the pitching staff stays healthy, a lineup and defense of the following would make them serious contenders in the NL:

Pierre

Lugo

DLee

ARam

Jones

Murton

Barrett

Cedeno

I wouldn't call myself the most sabermetrically-inclined(BK would get my vote), but my previous username was mostly due to lack of creativity. Spur of the moment, I just as easily could've been MPrior22 or (perish the thought) BHill17.

FYI, The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox appear to be willing to deal Marte for Coco Crisp. This may lower The Devil Rays asking price for Lugo. Perhaps Hendry won't have to give up much to acquire him for 2B.

Also yesterday, there were ongoing conversations between the Sox and Indians aimed at bringing outfielder Coco Crisp to Boston. The deal, according to a major league source, probably would cost the Sox top prospect Andy Marte and probably would include multiple players changing sides.
