My only complaint with the Big 10 tourney is that it ends roughly 5 minutes before the selection show renderring the championship(unless a team earns an auto bid from it) worthless.

no, you could have a day between games. The short turnaround affects the quality of the final games.

I don't think so. That's how all of the major conference tournaments are. College kids can play 3 games in 3 days. When these guys are in AAU they often play multiple games in one day. In a year or two when they get to the NBA they will have to do it at times

I do wish the championship game ended earlier though. As it is now the only thing that really matters is getting to the championship game. The brackets are set by the time the final is decided.

especially this year where if Illinois and Ohio state met it should be for a 1 seed, but now won't it also could bumb Iowa into a 2 but might not. Stupid how they do it.

Of course it matters who wins the Big 10 tourney. The selection comittee basically has everything figured out but has two scenarios depending on who wins that game. How could that game not matter?

Where are you getting that they have two different scenarios depending on who wins the game?

Because the committee has basically said it doesn't matter and past history has shown that the championship game doesn't have an impact on the seeds of the two teams. The committee has said that they can't do it with the short timeframe.

It's not as simple as having two different brackets and saying you'll go with one if Illinois wins or another if OSU wins. There are too many variables and too much going on before the brackets are announced for them to do that.

I don't know two tournys ago Illinois was ranked number 7 in America had won the big ten outright and was rolling like 12 straight wins, Wiscy was ranked number 9 and just waxed us. Their reward for beating a top ten team by 20 plus, a 5 seed. I don't think this tourny has any impact for the top teams.

but what if the final is Illinois vs. Penn State or something? Wouldn't a loss to an unranked team hurt them? Plus Penn State would get an automatic berth, bumping someone else

I remember that and remember feeling completely hosed.

If a Sunday final includes a team not expected to be in the field, then the committee has multiple scenarios (see 1999 tournament, Illinois). If every team involved Sunday is already planned into the field, the Sunday games make minimal difference. The only time I remember a team seemingly skyrocketing from a conference tournament performance was Maryland a couple years back, where they went from on the bubble to a 4 seed (which turned out to be unreasonably high, since they almost lost in the first round and did get bumped in the second).

EDIT: Part of the reason the seeding doesn't change much is because of the pod system. Once the committee has teams arranged by pod, so that higher seeds don't get screwed out of their location, then to move even 2 teams around could offset entire brackets. Imagine even a scenario where an Ohio State-Illinois Sunday matchup were to decide which was a one seed and which was a 2 seed.

However, Illinois had been slated to go to the Auburn Hills pod as a 2 seed, and Ohio State had been slated to go to the Dayton pod as a 1 seed. If Illinois won, then, what do you do? If you move Illinois to a 1 seed and moved them to Dayton with OSU to Auburn Hills, there might be a geographical disadvantage for Illinois/OSU that there wasn't in the previous pod setup. If you kept them in their pods and just put them against the other teams, there might also be geographical disadvantages (say Kent State won the MAC tournament and was slated to be in OSU's pod at Dayton as a 9 seed, but getting moved to Auburn Hills in Illinois' pod puts them closer than Illinois). There are just too many variables present with the pod system to have a game 20 minutes before the presentation affecting something as trivial as seeding.

I remember that and feeling completely hosed with just a 4 seed...in the hardest bracket. Then I was in disbelief with Wisconsin as a 5.

I wasn't too mad I thought we could beat anyone and still think with a fiarly refereed game we move on past Duke. We were beating them until Deron, James, and Roger all got in foul trouble, while JJ had his hand holding Luther's jersey all game.

Bad news about the upsets today, Michigan and Iu might still have some work left to do.

IU would have to get ripped apart tomorrow to miss the tourney. Michigan should be worried if they don't come back and beat Minny.

Michigan is in the NIT if they don't win in the next 60 seconds, might still be if they win. IU is in. Way too many quality wins.

Haha Big 10 fans....you have to listen to Brent Mushburger!

He's crossing the line into senility. Not only does he say stupid stuff, but he'll say the foul is on the wrong team and it'll take him 2 minutes to figure out he screwed up, because he'll be repeating his mistake ad nauseum.

He did that in the late 70's. There was a reason why CBS fired him.

Congrats on the Purdue win by the way.
