AP[/url]"]COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State was placed on three years' probation Friday, a ruling that wipes out records from four NCAA Tournament appearances by the men's basketball team -- including a trip to the 1999 Final Four.

 

The decision by the NCAA does not affect this season's team, which is 22-4 and ranked seventh in the country. The announcement came about two hours before the top-seeded Buckeyes' quarterfinal game against Penn State in the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis.

 

The Buckeyes won't be barred from postseason play as a result of using an ineligible player from 1999-2002 under former coach Jim O'Brien. However, the school will have to repay tournament revenues, likely around $800,000, for the four years in which Boban Savovic played. He received improper gifts, including housing and cash, from a booster.

 

Ohio State must take down the 1999 Final Four banner which hangs from the rafters in Value City Arena.

I agree with you. All this team does is shoot 3 pointers. They have four guys sit on the perimeter and Dials inside. I really do not like the way they play.

The refs just let Dials do whatever the hell he wants in the lane. It's why I never support moving the 3 point line back in college, cause the last thing the college game needs more of is dumping the ball down low to some overweight slug who pushes people around and hits a 3 footer. You want that? Go watch the NBA.

I believe this hinges on their perimeter game, beyond Dials they haven't much, if anything inside, if they continue to shoot the 3 as they have lately they'll go down in the 2nd Round. On the other hand, if they have another stretch as they did against UM, MSU and Illinois, they'll make the FF.

I tip my hat to O$U. They got hot when it counted and showed why they are the better team. That said, I think Penn State can win a few games in the NIT and will be better next year. Parker is the only senior, Geary is a great shooter, and the team had the BigTen Freshman of the Year.

I think they have the veteran talent to withstand their struggles. They have 4 senior starters. And for their recent struggles, they've still won 6 games in a row.

Seriously though - i've been really impressed with Gullickson. He reminds me of a young version of Wilkinson offensively. Hopefully he comes somewhat near as savy on the defensive end.
