Nomar Garciaparra has agreed in principle to a one-year deal with the Dodgers with a base salary of $6 million, according to the Boston Herald.

It appears likely that Garciaparra will play first base, which should lead to Hee Seop Choi being traded or non-tendered by Tuesday's deadline. Garciaparra figures to bat fifth behind J.D. Drew and Jeff Kent in the Los Angeles lineup. Dec. 18 - 1:56 am et

Ahh... too bad. I was hoping for a Barrett, CPatt, Walker and Williams for Lowe and Drew deal. WHo would cathc for us you might ask. The answer? Bengie Molina, who is getting no love, and would be an upgrade defensively and a wash offensively for us. LA does it to free up lots of money and to get younger. We do it, because it solves our RF problem, as well as bolstering (sort of) our rotation. LA could have played Walker at 2B and Kent at 1B... heck, they still could play Walker in LF, Kent at 1B and Nomar at 2B. They need a cathcer badly, but cannot afford a good one like Molina. If they made this deal with us, they'd free up 20 million in 2006, enough to pay Nomar, Walker, CP, Williams, Barrett, a free agent OF, AND to re-sign Weaver.

We'd need a 2B, but that appears to be easier to find than a RF...

To play 1st base? Hmmm...Nomar's main value comes from the fact that he gets above average production from the shortstop position. I really don't like this move by the Dodgers at all.

I'm sorry, but I would've been unhappy had the Cubs paid $6MM to Nomar, the risk is just too great. But I'm happy for him, I don't think ANYONE wasn't excited when Hendry made that trade in 2004, and everyone wanted Nomar to do well here.

And yes--count me in for snagging Hee Seop if he's available. What a nice LH bat on the bench that would be, no?

They probably wouldn't have needed to. Nomar was pretty eager to re-sign with the Cubs, and probably would have been open to a hometown discount.

PS. Get Choi!

And my top SS option since the start of the offseason is out of the picture... (as if he was ever seriously looked at by the Cubs)

Early in the off-season, when JH stated one of his priorities were to improve the defense, I knew Nomar was as good as gone.

I like Nomar, but the Dodgers may set the record this year for most player days on the DL. I wonder how all that stretching at 1B is going to go over.

Agreed. I think Nomar should be playing LF if anything. How is he going to make those stretches from 1b after a season where he completely tore up his groin?

Glad to see him go to the Dodgers instead of the Astros though. It would have been pretty much a guarantee that he would have killed us if he played for the Astros.

So who's playing 3b and what happens when Izturis comes back?

CF I would guess. By then Nomar could be hurt and Kent could be playing 1st with Izturis at 2nd. I hope that isn't the case though, because I really like Nomar.

Haha, poor Izturus.

Benjie isn't a wash offensively, it's a pretty huge downgrade. This was the best offensive season of Molina's career, and he wasn't within 40 OPS points of Barrett. It was also the first time in his career he's cracked a .750 OPS, while Barrett has been an .825 OPS guy since he's been here, and is two years younger.

Yeah, I don't get the 1b option. Wouldn't it be a better idea to just stick him in LF and call it good. Drew in CF, Jose Cruz in RF.

When Izturis comes back, Kent slides to 1b and Choi becomes trade deadline commodity.

According to this, the Dodgers are pursuing both Reggie Sanders and Kenny Lofton?

Meanwhile, the issue of where Garciaparra will play if he joins the Dodgers also is becoming clearer. The Dodgers appear to have a strong chance of landing free agents Reggie Sanders, who would play left field, and Kenny Lofton, who would play center.

If the Dodgers sign all three players, Garciaparra then would play first base.

Sanders and Lofton, both 38, were with San Francisco in 2002 when the Giants came tantalizingly close to winning the World Series before blowing Game 6 and losing Game 7 to the Angels. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti was the Giants' assistant GM that year and thinks highly of both players.

Sanders, who lives outside Phoenix, has received two-year offers from the Dodgers and at least two others clubs. His 15 seasons in the majors have been spent with seven different teams, all of them in the National League, including the past two years with St. Louis.

It is believed Sanders' preference is to sign with the Dodgers because he wants to play for an NL team on the West Coast and because of his history with Colletti.

"We have had conversations with Los Angeles," said Mike Powers, Sanders' Baltimore-based agent. "Right now, we're just waiting and collecting offers. We hope to wrap this up within the next week and get all this behind us. I would like to have Reggie go into the holidays knowing where he is going to play next year."

Lofton met with Arizona Diamondbacks officials on Friday at Chase Field, but he hasn't visited Dodger Stadium unless such a meeting took place Saturday. Lofton is believed to have narrowed his choices to the Dodgers and Diamondbacks and is willing to sign a one-year deal, but his decision is expected to hinge largely on playing time.

If they land both Lofton and Sanders, where would that leave Cruz?

How about helping them out and taking Drew off of their hands?

My thoughts exactly...but on the other hand, I wouldn't mind Cruz either.

Actually, if you want to use the stats objectively (instead of subjectively, as many people here do when they have a point to prove) you would see that, in their careers, Barrett does have a better OPS... .740 to Molina's .704. .036 points. That's not a great deal. Barrett is a higher OPS guy, but hitting in the 7th or 8th spot, I want avg. Not OBP. Hits drive in runs that low in the order. OBP gets you on for a pitcher who gets on base at a .185 clip.

Power is basically even. OBP and SLG are pluses for Barrett, no doubt. But, it's fairly even. And, with the defensive upgrade we'd get (a pretty big one, at that) I feel that Molina would be a nice pickup, especially if it netted us a RF and SP.

Hey, you are entitled to disagree with me. I'm just not on the NSBB OPS Bandwagon, necessarily. The game is actually more than that. Average actually matters, too... though you'd never know it from around here.
