I do:

Sanders:

267/344/491/835

Burnitz:

255/348/485/833

Career only? Not much to go on, especially when talking about two old guys. Burnitz's slightly younger age does nothing for me. They're both old. Sanders has held up better with age. Outside of Coors Burnitz has been awful for a while.

Reggie hasn't exactly been a world beater himself. It really is a sad state of affairs, with the money available this offseason, for people to be campaigning over Reggie Sanders of all people. Reggie sucks, Burny sucks, Jones sucks, Wilson sucks, Patterson sucks -- let's make a splash for crying out loud.

The numbers are pretty much a wash.

There's a big enough difference in numbers to merit bringing in Sanders over Burnitz.

WHERE???

Burnitz has an OPS + 105 over the last 3 years, Sanders has an OPS of 121.

Also, over the last 3 years Sanders has an EqA of .289 and Burnitz has a .268.

That's a huge difference in production.

Not being a world beater himself doesn't make him as bad as Burnitz. He's better. There's a pretty clear distinction between the two players. And I wouldn't want either as the starter.

When I see all this stuff about the Cubs seeking a "left-handed hitting right fielder", it makes me wonder even more why we had no interest in going after Brian Giles....he would have fit the bill perfectly, just doesn't make any sense at all.

signing giles would be admitting that there's something to the statistic of on-base percentage. hendry will never do that, he hates OBP, and will go out of his way to avoid players who have it.

Who wouldn't want Giles? But I think its unfair to criticize Hendry for not signing Giles. Giles had no intentions of leaving the West Coast. He turned down bigger money elsewhere to stay in SD.

according to who?

Giles was offered $34.5 MM/3 years from Los Angeles, but turned it down to stay in San Diego.

And that's not a lot more money. 3/$39 would have been a starting poitn to convince him to move.

how about 2 years $36? I think with a guy like Giles I would go more money and fewer years.

Considering his age, I'm sure he would have wanted at least three years.

I agree. He would have wanted a 3 year deal. 3/45m would have made him happy to live anywhere for the next 3 years.

Imagine what Giles in RF would have meant to this team.....

Ah, nevermind. Imagining at this point only hurts.

Jones had some personal issues in 04 and 05 (his father passed in 04), so perhaps he'll bounce back to his 02 and 03 numbers (.852 ops & .797 ops), with some more time behind him.

Jones would be alright as a 6 hitter, but the Cubs really need Tejada still, and I can see Pie being dealt w/ Pierre in CF and Jones in RF.

been saying this all along...

go with patterson in right and see what he's done with his game in the offseason. if it's the same old story, broker a deal at the deadline and use the $$ you would give jones on a big name player since more talent will be available in july than is now.

$5M in additional payroll for a guy who isn't that much (if any) of an upgrade to what we already have.

jim, to quote a fellow poster, you've got two strikes and you're check swinging...

I don't understand the hatred for JJ. He is a stud against righties and a dud against lefties.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=4085

A great platoon with someone we could get for Walker and a pitching prospect

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=5088

A deeper bench and a more cost-effective combination than Brian Giles perhaps? :D

He's barely acceptable for a corner OF against RHP, not quite a stud. If we're trading Walker and a prospect for Mench, skip Jones entirely.

His numbers vs. RHP are alot better than acceptable. However, why would you sign a guy for three years at more than $5M a year to be a platoon player?

Jones, who would bat against RHP, would be had a $5 MM per year for three years. Mench, who would bat against LHP in RF and would share LF with Murton against RHP, would cost under $1 million for this year.

If Pie becomes the RF in 2007, he'll be paid $300k, and you would platoon Jones and Murton in LF for less than $6 million for 2007 and 2008.

A Jones/Mench/Murton platoon would give you more cost-effective production over three years than paying a declining Brian Giles $11 million per year for three years, leaving you money to get Tejada at SS if the opportunity arises.

you want to trade our starting 2b AND a prospect to get a platoon player who will start twice a week? no thanks.

wow, does jones suck against lefties. again, how is there even talk of him getting a multi-year deal? he's practically a 4th OF type.

Ummm..maybe Giles?

Giles signed for 3/30 to stay in SD. Didn't Toronto offer him some big money? I know LA was in on him, but they are also a West Coast team.

Giles has made no secret over the years as to his preference for playing on the West Coast. This isn't news.

ummmm......are you in contact with him? because there was nothing out of the giles camp to indicate that any team had offered him more than 10 mil per.

so unless you had some inside info, you couldn't know.

I guess by your analysis you have no inside info on Hendry, and the fact that he would do whatever he could to NOT sign OBP guys.

(Since Bruno's circumstantial evidence is invalid, yours is too).

several sources (including those in toronto) indicated that toronto offered 5/55.

Toronto denies ever offering it. And Toronto is:

1. In another country

2. About as far away from San Diego as you can get

3. American League

4. In a division with the Yankees and Red Sox

If Murton stumbles early vs. RH pitching it's very likely we could see a Jones/Murton platoon in LF, Pierre in CF, and Patterson in RF.

Hendry should be fired on the spot if thats his outfield and we dont have Miguel Tejada at shortstop.

maybe they deny it (though lots of teams do that after losing out on a free agent, especially because anyone else that wants to sign could ask for that money), but i don't see what anything else you said has to do with his comment that "[he] couldn't know" about anything regarding giles.
