This is a quote from the Mabry signing article from Cubs.com:

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051207&content_id=1278082&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc

"We've got four new guys we're thrilled to have," Hendry said of Mabry, Pierre, Howry and Scott Eyre. "I'm not in a hurry -- 'Oh, I have to get another outfielder before I leave here or it hasn't been a great trip.'

Are you guys being intentionally dense just to be cute and funny?

Hendry's saying he doesn't have to get another outfielder before he leaves to make this a great trip.

We've got the cash and the prospects to get this done - we need more of an impact and less of a risk in RF AND we should snag a good SP as well. The less risks this team takes, the better. Starting Williams all season is a risk, imo. Wood is already going to miss the first few games, which leaves us with an opening day rotation of Prior, Z, Maddux, Williams and Rusch - that isnt good enough to get the job done, we need a DOMINANT pitching staff for this team to win. I want to see another quality pitcher in that rotation eating up innings. In regards to the RF bat, we need someone with some power and high obp - should've snagged Giles when we had the chance.

No one was "snagging" Giles unless his name was Towers. I think we need to get past that.

I'm "past" it....I was never really that much "for" it at the time anyways, so your comment is completely irrelevant in regards to my opinion. If I would've had some foreshadowing at the time, I probably would've been more for signing Giles when he was available, which is all I was saying.

I disagree, in light of this comment:

But hey, I must have misread what I read.

Bradley seems imminent, from Jayson Stark:

The Cubs and Dodgers haven't finalized a deal that would send outfielder Milton Bradley to the Cubs. But it seems clear that Bradley will be traded in the next few days, and no team is more interested in Bradley than the Cubs. Dusty Baker came away from a meeting with Bradley last month convinced that Bradley could fit. And Bradley's .350-plus on-base percentage the last three years also would fit. Only two Cubs regulars -- Derrek Lee and Aramirs Ramirez -- had an on-base percentage over .350 this season.

I like this move a lot. Plus, we need some of the fire that he brings to a team... until he calls Kerry Wood a racist.

And Wood breaks his arm taking a swing at him.

Just curious, why are alot of you so high on Milton Bradley? The guy is a headcase who has never played a full season in his career and has only played over 100 games twice in his career. It seems like there are bushels of outfielders out there who are healthier and have better stats.

His health is the biggest thing that worries me at this point, but what other options are out there? What outfielders could we realistically go after?

I also do not quite get the general obsession on this board with bradley. yeah, he's pretty good when he's not injured or suspended. but injured and suspended happen a lot with bradley. funny, how last year's offseason was all about getting rid of the clubhouse problems.

then again, that didn't turn out so well...

Career .350 OBP. That's all you need to be high on a certain player. Hit Bradley 2, 5, 6, etc.. and you know he'll perform. That's the kind of player the Cubs need (note I said nothing about the player as a person).

Healthier? Yeah. Better numbers? That's questionable at best.

If Dusty can't make it work with a player like Bradley then whats he good for.

It's like they say about Dusty: He's the best manager in Baseball until the game actually starts.

Posted

The problem with Bradley is that he's a 2 hitter, when the Cubs need a 4 or 5 hitter. You get Bradley, Dusty hits him 5th, and you-know-who hits 2nd. Which is why they need Lugo as well.

Hendry does have nearly $20MM burning a hole in his pocket, you know. Is the Trib going to recapture that now, and send the payroll back to the low 80s?

I was wondering the same thing. If Bradley is acquired, the number of moves that Hendry will make the rest of the offseason is few. What about all this left over payroll. That's why making a move for an OF like Abreu or Floyd who have big contracts left can make sense. The Cubs could pick up the majority of those contracts, perhaps instead of shipping out more prospects.

I agree with this. Everyone here cried and whined over getting Juan Pierre, a proven veteran who plays virtually every day, is well-liked, and is considered one of the better leadoff hitters out there. But here's Bradley, a guy with known character issues and history of injury, and everyone is desperate for the Cubs to get him.

Bushels? Where? Hendry's OF options have shrunk. I don't see him getting in on the Abreu, Drew, Manny, Dunn ideas. Floyd and Bradley are probably the next batch, and Floyd's availability is much less know than Bradley's.

Regardless, they need two OF bats now.

If they are smart they will take some of it and invest it in more and better scouting and minor league player development. They could upgrade their DR acadamy. They could hire a Pacific rim scout (Leon Lee for example). They don't have to spend all of on overprice castoffs.

Hendry could also save some for the trading deadline or for next year.

It is time to do some forward thinking. As of today I don't see 2006 becoming the year of the Cub. But you never know.

Bradley is no ideal acquisition. But Hendry passed on ideal long ago, and so far has settled for spare parts that don't help much. RF has always been the biggest hole on the team, and they need a bat out there, but they don't seem interested in the good ones. I'd be happy with somebody better than Bradley, I just don't see the Cubs getting those few guys that are out there.

I want Bradley because we can get him for Patterson and a bucket of balls, and he is an on-base machine. And since we are pretty sure that all the Cubs' players can deal with black people, I think he'd be a good pickup.
