At the end of this day, all we can really say is that it's cool to be involved, because at no time in the previous 100-whatever years prior to 2015 or so would we be. He clearly wants to be on the west coast, but the cubs overall product is too hard to give a flat no to without at least spinning the tires. Thanks Theo.

I think they should lead with "Javy already knows your name, and he hasn't bothered to learn the names of half the guys in the organization. In fact, he just called John Mallee "bat guy" the entire time he was here, and he was one of our coaches."

"Right Javy?"

"That's right gorilla suit guy"

One Cubs-specific bit from the Kyodo News piece: “When the Fighters played a practice game against South Korea’s KT Wiz on Feb. 8, Ohtani did his rehab work that day at the Cubs’ spring camp site and was impressed by the new facility’s size and training equipment.” It’s something!

All of the teams that are finalists have Spring Training in AZ, so maybe that's more of a thing that one might think.

so SF and the Dodgers had their meetings yesterday, and the Rangers have theirs today, apparently.

Have they said when the Cubs are going? If they are the last to meet with him isn't that a good sign?

Nope. Heard the three teams I mentioned on MLBN Radio on my drive to work this morning, but that seems to be all anyone knows so far.

Generally speaking first and last are best if you are in the middle you have to have a really strong argument

Going first or last is advantageous in most presentations. In a case like this, its very possible its just scheduling stuff though.

Honestly, this entire process is nuts. You can talk yourself up or down on about every little morsel that gets released. We don't know a damn thing. Its hilarious that one day the Yankees are the leaders in the clubhouse, then those same guys have turned to the Mariners and Padres. They don't know a damn thing either.

http://www.espn.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/46263/in-race-for-shohei-ohtani-dont-count-the-cubs-out-just-yet

Article from Jesse Rogers. He does report that several Cubs players have been asked to keep their calendars open in case they need to fly to LA for the meeting with Ohtani

If Ohtani were to be acquired, the Cubs would have to say goodbye to an outfielder. They are mulling over trading a core player for some pitching as is; a deal with Ohtani would fast-track that, with Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora or others on the move. At that point, the Cubs could settle for the best offer instead of holding out for a top-three starter, something they are unlikely to get unless Addison Russell or Javier Baez is part of a trade. A top-three or -four pitcher won’t be needed as desperately if Ohtani is on board.

lmfao, what? no.

signing ohtani literally allows us to do the opposite of that

That whole paragraph is so bad. “If the Cubs hit a grand slam and land a potential superstar for nothing, then they’d lose all leverage in any trade talks and have to settle for a bad deal to add pitching they no longer need.”

I don’t know if Rogers and writers like him are just stupid or are being intentionally obtuse to keep a narrative alive that can lead to more content/pageviews (since talking about trading Schwarber, Russell, etc is going to get clicks even if off base).

another example of this is still talking like the bonus amount is a key factor when like half the teams on his list (after he eliminated like 23? teams - meaning he easily could have eliminated the 300k bonus teams too) are in the penalty box too.

What Shohei Ohtani's decision means for the Trump White House, and also child rape laws and guns.

A bit of insight into Ohtani.

Well this is an absolutely silly ass thing to say

Yet while it’s a bona fide shocker Ohtani didn’t even take a face-to-face meeting with the Yankees — why not at least use them for leverage with the other teams he really wanted? — my reporting made me less stunned that he’ll end up elsewhere.
