yea, I just saw that - its a two-year deal with a player option? 5.5 a year? This just gets worse and worse. He better throw 100 innings.

It's only worth $11 million if he exercises the player option for the 3rd year. It's a typo on ESPN.

We haven't worked all that out yet," Eyre's agent Tommy Tanzer said. "There is going to be a signing bonus."

It says player option - so lets assume the options brings it to 11. Glad to hear there is a signing bonus too!

It's kinda weird they don't have all the details worked out. I've never heard of a contract signing like that.

yea, I thought so too. Why announce it? Did you read all the incentives too? Whoopee. CBS has it as 2 for 11 as well - though they could all have the same incorrect source.

I'm pretty sure the source is the same because the wording is.

2 years w/ an option for a 3rd @ $11 mil sounds good, and my initial guess will be on the money. :o If true, people can drop the pitchforks.

As for Rusch being the 5th starter, what happened to Jerome Williams. I'm not buying it. If Hendry's focus is strengthening the pitching, then Rusch will be in long relief.

The Chicago Cubs added the lefty to the bullpen mix on Thursday, signing Eyre to a two-year contract with a player option for a third year. If Eyre exercises the option, the contract is worth $11 million.

I believe Eyre was seeking 3/11 so this has to be right.

This, in general is the problem with MLB. We're all on here complaining about the $ and length of the deal. If this was the NFL, nobody would give a crap. We'd be discussing the player. As we should be now.

If this was the NFL, we'd be telling ourselves "it's ok, hendry will be fired after the failure this season and the new gm will kill neifi and rusch's contracts, so it won't be so bad.

It's safe to say that Hendry feels Eyre will compliment Ohman (or vice versa).

He might even complement him.

Wow, was that necessary? Sorry I forgot my spell check. How about commenting on the content of the post?

How the heck can they sign a contract if they don't know what the terms of the deal are?

Surely, you can't be serious. Pointing out a spelling mistake is pure, comedy gold.

Lighten up, Francis. I was just giving you the business. Spell check wouldn't have helped anyway. Your spelling was right. Just chose the wrong word. :D

You were dead on about both guys being in the bullpen, by the way. Eyre's not redundant. Overpaid, but not redundant.

The problem with Rusch being long relief is there is no room for him in the pen unless we trade somebody from that group.

Eyre

Ohman

Dempster

Novoa

Williamson

Wuertz

RH setup guy that Hendry has said he wants to get

Thats 7 men in the pen right there. Once again I will ask where in the hell does Rusch fit in on this team.

I love this site, I just feel there are double standards on the "nicknames" for players, and how regular posters get away with alot more than new ones. But I will admit my fault, I shouldn't have made that comment on this thread, we are talking about Eyre here.

Where else have ripped on how the site is run? :?:

A) I don't think I've seen anyone use "dumpster" in a derogatory way since 2004, which is well before the ban on such names.

B) there should be a double standard in a community this small between long time posters and newbies. The mods here know the people with thousands of posts. They know their general intentions and know if they can be trusted to reign it in if they're instructed to do so. There is a VERY GOOD REASON THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE LAW. We have the sort of legal system ENTIRELY because we live in a society where most people do not know most other people they may run into. It's simply not a good idea to apply to this sort of community because the judges actually know everyone involved in the incidents they moderate.

I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.

Something tells me you were hoping that someday, someone was going to say that, so you could make this joke.

Whatever...it's funny anyway!!

The Trib article on the Eyre signing mentions that now the Cubs can pencil in Rusch as the 5th man in the rotation and can no longer have to pursuit another starter.

YUCK YUCK YUCK!! So that means we are probably trading Jerome. The trade of Williams better bring in a big time bat because having Rusch as our #5 is asking for problems. Id 100x's rather have Jerome.

As 5th starters go, what makes you so sure that Rusch is so terrible?

Going back to 2004, he was quite good for a 5th starter and last season, out of 19 starts only 4 or 5 of them were bad. The rest were quite good. I know Glendon's numbers from last season overall were nothing to write home about, but if you look more closely, he was great in April and May and the first week or so of June and then he lost something. His numbers were down the rest of June, all of July and August, but whatever it was that was off, he fixed it because in September, he was back to performing like he was in 2004.

If it is accurate that Glendon figured out what was wrong in the middle part of last season and fixed it, then he would be a 5th starter capable of posting an ERA in the mid-3s or even lower. Now, that might not be accurate. I guess we will have to find out.
