Eyre vs. LH'ers over the last 3 years. Very productive, DIPS won't recognize the +22 IP/H, but if you strike out almost as baserunners allowed, you're doing well.

81.2IP 59H 5HR 26BB 73K

I view him as a LOOGY who can set-up, if the set-up guy needs a day off.

I'd keep Ohman as the second LOOGY, his age, salary, and talent should be held onto as LOOGY #2. Baker is a micromanager, make this pen as cookie-cutter as possible with 2 LOOGYs, closer, set-up, 7th inning guy, and long-relief/set-up. Not giving him those options will lead to the mismanagement we've seen from him when he manages the pen.

Exactly. This is why such redundancy is necessary. Dusty will slot a few (or more?) guys into slots that aren't 'correct' and we need guys left to fill the spots those guys should've filled in the first place.

Go Cubs!

After an arbitration raise to Zambrano, my guess is its closer to 20.

Currently under contract:

Aramis Ramirez - $10,500,000

Derrek Lee - $9,416,667

Michael Barrett - $4,000,000 (estimated)

Henry Blanco - $1,500,000

Kerry Wood - $12,000,000

Greg Maddux - $9,000,000

Mark Prior - $2,750,000

Ryan Dempster - $5,000,000

Todd Walker - $2,500,000

Scott Williamson - $2,000,000

Glendon Rusch - $2,750,000

Neifi Perez - $2,500,000

Scott Eyre - $3,666,667 (estimated)

Subtotal #1 - $67,583,333

Add Zambrano at $6,000,000 and Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz at $350,000 each.

Subtotal #2 - $74,983,333

That leaves about $25 million, assuming a payroll of $100 million.

Plus another $2.5MM when Walker is inevitably traded. Now you're at $27.5MM. And that assumes $100MM, when I think $105MM is probably more like it. After all, they ended up last year at $102MM counting Sosa's salary.

Let's just say a rough $30MM is still available to spend. That's a lot of dough, and could easily fetch for example, Giles + Furcal + Pierre + another reliever. The money is there.

BBB, Hammond was a perfect example. How much cash did the yankees toss at him?

I hate to bring this into the discussion, but does anybody think Hendry might be caving on the length of deals a lot this winter? Something about finishing below the Brewers might make him feel he has to win next year, even if it means giving one to many years just to get guys in the fold.

Hammond got 2/4.6m after a 0.95 ERA in Atlanta, from George Steinbrenner.

Enough said.

hOW MUch must all the other managers hate hendry at this point? Just a few days in and he's signing all these not-terribly-good/poor players to sizable salaries.

Yep, not like we like seeing them waste money on Neifi, but it's not going to preclude him from acquiring a good player, or 2 good players.

I wonder how much Mike Myers will get now since he's the only lefty not named Ryan/Wagner who's worth a crap. I bet his pricetag just went up a little bit.

Yeesh. Remind me to stop coming home from places. I come home from school today and see this deal is "close" and that hendry doesnt want to pursue Giles. Now I come home from work and the deal is done. not only is it done, but it is far too expensive. Crimeny. Edited by Roast

Ha ha. Maybe this is his strategy - just make all the top tier players unsignable by ANYONE.

As terrible a strategy as that would be, it's better than any other strategy I can conceive of that includes signing Neifi, Rusch, and Eyre to bloated contracts early in the offseason.

I have a feeling everyone will be much happier and calmer after those deals shake out.

Calmer than you.

The thing I dont understand about this signing is what does it do to Ohman and Rusch? Does this mean Rusch is definatly starting? Does it mean Ohman is trade bait? There is no way in hell we go in(or should) to next season with 3 lefties in the bullpen. To me Ohman is pretty much the exact same thing as Eyre but hes cheaper and younger, so whats the point?

Maybe Ohman is now expendable/trade bait?

It's safe to say that Hendry feels Eyre will compliment Ohman (or vice versa).

Daily Hearld:

“Scott was the best guy on the market for us. He had a terrific year,” Cubs general Jim Hendry said. “He has proven he can pitch almost every day with 80 appearances. He’s effective against righties and lefties. We felt it was important to add a quality lefty in the pen to go with (Wil) Ohman.”

Hey Roast,

I am probably going to get flamed for this, but would it be possible for you to leave out "Jesus Christ" when posting on this forum. I apologize if this comes off as rude or calling you out, I just have been bothered by it for awhile and I would like to enjoy this forum without having my Lords name used that way. If the mods see otherwise, I will let it go. I just don't see a reason to use it.

Again, I am not trying to call you out or embarrass you, just asking for alittle respect when language is tossed around here.

Thanks man!

I can't believe everyone is overlooking the obvious good news that the Eyre signing brings:

Dusty is here to stay for a while. :pukel:

I actually agree with you, I really need to cut back on doing that. I never used to, i just have of late. Stress makes you say stuff. No offense taken, and I appologize for the language.

Why? because he came over from San Fran? I don't follow the logic.

I thought his agent said one of the reasons Eyre liked the Cubs so much was Dusty. I think the money probably helps too.

Yea well, Eyre isn't Pujols, I doubt we'd keep a manager after another crappy season, just because Eyre likes Dusty.

If we sign Johnny Damon, we could scream that out and actually be talking about our centerfielder.
