Last year it seemed forever until Beltran signed. By then RF FA was a mess and hendry turned to Burnitz. So does this year pan out the same? are we waiting for furcal before we make moves?. I think this is foolish there are other moves that can be made to help this ballclub. Is hendry actively looking into guys like Chad Tracy or Abreu. For all the talk about the reds no way a trade happens here, i dont see a match between what we can give them in return for an OF. So to sum it up are we waiting for furcal to do anything or looking already for guys who can catch the ball!! sorry couldn't resist....

I originally thought that there might have to be a trade or two made this week before the deadline for adding minor leaguers to the 40-man roster.

I thought we might need to clear roster space.

But, now, the roster stands at 37 and there are at least two guys we can take off with no heartburn (Lewis and Aardsma). That would open five spots - enough for 5/7ths of: Pie, Nolasco, Marshall, Marmol, Ryu, Sing, and Brownlie.

After that, though, there will have to be some 2- or 3-for-1 trades made, because there's going to be a roster crunch when we start adding new core players.

IMO, trades might happen first. With respect to both the Cubs and the league in general.

It is a player's market. So the big names have nothing to lose by waiting for the desperate/big money teams to fight it out.

Why don't you see a trade with Cincy? They need cheap, good pitching. We have cheap, good pitching.

We can give them quality or quantity.

it all depends on how much Hendry is willing to give up for Dunn or Kearns. We have the pieces to get one of them (assuming the Reds will trade within the division).

Rumor has it, the Reds will hold off making moves until the ownership change is approved.

There is always going to be a fear factor when trading within the division. Very rare that true value can be had by both sides. If I were the reds and the cubs came knocking i would start the discussion with zambrano and as the cubs would balk at that i would want.

Williams, Hill , Pinto and possibly another top tier prospect. Hendry walked away on a Dunn for Hill deal so do you really see these guys getting it together?. As for Kearns i personally feel his upside is not worth the amount of pitching we would give. Put along side all this that teams from the AL such as Boston and Oakland could offer a package far superior to ours and cincy wouldn't see him 19 times a year. I also think the Mets ( as usual) and LA will be sniffing.............

Just a point of clarification: Hendry did not walk away from a Dunn for Hill deal. There was no such proposed deal. He only said, when asked about his position on Rich Hill, that he wouldn't do a Hill for Dunn trade straight up. That's all.

I don't disagree with that. If I'm Cincy, I'd rather trade outside of the division. But, what teams can offer more than the Cubs? Would it be in their best interest to trade for lesser players outside of the division or for more within the division?

The Cubs can do a lot of stuff for the Reds besides provide quality and quantity. The can also provide cash or help them move a bad contract.

The Marlins recently helped Atlanta out with Hampton. The Pirates recently helped out the Cubs with Aramis, Lofton and Simon. The Phillies swapped Estrada for Millwood with Atlanta.

It doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen.

Rich Hill better be the lefthanded Carlos Zambrano if JH honestly feels that way.

I'm not JH, so I have no idea what he was actually thinking, but just because he said it doesn't necessarily mean he meant it. If GMs were completely frank all the time, it wouldn't be baseball.

It's also worth pointing out that he said this around the trade deadline, when Hill's value was at its highest, as his weaknesses hadn't been exposed on the MLB level just yet. I don't think Hendry values Hill quite as highly as he used to - but I imagine he'd still be hard to pry off of his hands.

Ah, I wasn't aware of the comment's timing.

Because Cincy is too stupid to realize that we match up pretty well as trading partners. That's why...

Do they? I don't think the Cubs have a A level pitching prospects required to get Dunn. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Cubs have a lot of B and C guys.

I wish something would go down. This is just annoying to have to wait with no clue what to look forward to for next years team.

There's a looong offseason ahead of us. I'm not looking forward to hearing "Are we there yet?" one million times.

You are wrong, his name is Mark Pawelek, he is an A level prospect. Unless of course you consider filthy young lefties a c level prospect. Too bad he can't be moved until june, well actually I am glad he can't.

Guzman was an "A" level prospect until his injury woes. He's not there now, but he definitely has the stuff and potential to be a staff ace.

I agree, before his injuries he was an 'A' level prospect.

Name a team that will give up "A" level pitching prospects for a corner outfielder who will soon be making 10m+ a season.

If Dunn was still in his early arby years, I might see a team chancing it.

Guzman is not a guy a team would likely take a chance on at this point. I'm fine with that. The Reds dropped the ball on their outfield situation, IMO.

If possible, I can't imagine a better lineup than:

SS Furcal

LF Murton

1B DLEE

RF: Dunn

3B: ARam

2B: Walker

C: Barrett

CF: Patterson

Pitcher

Seriously, adding the D from Patterson in CF, I think this is a great line-up. Not that I'm against Cedeno, I could replace Walker with him. But still, that's one heckuva lineup. And it could happen. COULD! Probably won't. :(
