Big Ten, ACC, Big East, SEC, Pac 10, Big 12 are ALL guaranteed one spot regardless of rankings in the BCS. The bowl games however that need those 'at large spots' CANNOT pick a team that is outside the top 12. ND was at one time (not sure if thats true anymore) were guaranteed a spot if they were in the top 8 bcs rankings.

ND is guaranteed a spot if they are in the top 8, or if a non-BCS team is in the top 6, gets an at-large, and ND is in the top twelve with 9 or more wins.

So right now they aren't in a BCS bowl?

Eligible, but not guarenteed. They will get an at-large undoubtedly, but they are not guarenteed one.

How the hell do you spell guarenteed? Is that right? Sure doesn't look right.

It is guaranteed.

ND will get in if they're eligible, except for 2002 when the at-large situation was very mucked up and BCS-eligible ND was passed over.

Thanks for the spelling help

2002 they did not deserve it, IMO. They lost two of their last three and got smoked by USC. They also got killed by NC State, so I know they would have been embarrassed by any BCS team. The beginning of the end for Ty.

This year Syracuse is a no win situation for the Irish unless strength of schedule doesn't count anymore.

In fairness to the Irish, they were competing until Holiday got hurt and we had to put Dillingham in. I love Pat for throwing the game winner against MSU in 02, but he's quite possibly the worst backup QB in the history of Notre Dame football and it showed in that bowl game. I just stopped watching once it got to around 21-3 because it was embarrassing.

once again the NIU-Toledo game is huge for us. For once, can we please beat them? Wolfe is questionable but I have talked to a few of their players and they think Wolfe is going to go. If Wolfe can go, I think we may be able to beat Toledo.

Wednesday night at 6:30, temps are supposed to be around 30-35 degrees with rain/snow. That should give us an advantage, especially our defense, if we don't have to worry about Gradkowski throwing the ball much.

Flames, I'll be rooting for your Huskies as a Toledo loss can potentially pull us to within one game of first place in the division. :)

can we go one day w/o the Notre Dame vs. Everyone Else fighting?

No fun.

I heard Penn St. cheats and uses 13 players when they play but the refs let them off cause they're related to Paterno.

I wish UCLA's defense would cheat. Then, maybe they could stop the run.

Same with Mizzou or MSU. :(

I'm still worried about this Saturday. Maybe even more so now. Not about a loss, although this team has really underperformed the past few weeks, but it's just so important that Basanez, Sutton (x-rays negative, cleared to play), and the offensive line bounce back. And for the love of all that is good, Randy Walker finally needs to crack and get a special teams coach.

A Notre Dame -Ohio State matchup would be fine with me. I like watching Notre Dame lose.

And ND very well could lose. I think ND would have a very legit chance of losing to any team they play in a BCS game. I would be OK if they lost also. I never thought they would be in a situation where I could be talking about a BCS game this season. It would suck if they lost, but they have already exceeded my expectations for the year.

Adam, you and I finally disagree on something!

I predicted ND to have 8 wins this year...while nine would exceed my expectations, once we get to a bowl I want to win it. I am so sick and tired of hearing about "we haven't won a bowl since 1994". I want to get a bowl win so that's not hanging over our heads anymore. I'd be upset if we lost a hypothetical BCS game - not incensed, but still unhappy.

Let me rephrase. If they are in a BCS game I want them to win. However just the fact they are in this position shows me that the team is headed in the right direction. Just look at how many people are talking about an "irrelevant" team right now. ND is on the rise and that makes me happy. A BCS win would probably silence a lot more of the critics. And losing would just add fuel to their fire. But honestly I am happy with what they have done and, IMO a loss would not take away from what they have accomplished.

What's sad is that the UCLA DL has the potential to be much better if everyone was healthy, but we've had some key guys out all season. Now, we have 3 under-sized true freshman in our rotation (and we lost our best true freshman in the Oklahoma game). Injuries happen, but I can't help but wonder how well the defense would play if they had the regulars.

Just goes to show that truly great teams not only have great starters, but great depth too

I'm sure most of you guys may have heard about it, but this Saturday will be Bill Snyder's last game as a head coach for Kansas State Wildcats, as he just announced that he will be stepping down at the season's end.

Another Hayden Fry protege retires.

I'm sure KSU will miss Snyder a lot. He came in before the 89 season and the Cats were arguably the worst team in college football, and less than a decade later, he was one Texas A&M OT run for a score of going to the national title game. What a great job that guy did with the Wildcats.

Agreed. It'll be interesting who Kansas State will name his successer. My money would be either on Gary Patterson (TCU) or Brent Venables (OU's D-Coordinator)

Pete Carroll and UCS are getting some heat for letting a player who was arrested play. I have read about 5 articles on this and this one seems to have the most info. From what I know USC has run a clean program, and I am not sure why Pete would change that now.

Could possibly be the first time since Carroll was hired that Plaschke wrote something bad about USC. With USC's depleted LB corpse, it was much harder for Carroll to take action against Maualuga.

Yikes, if they are playing dead people at LB then they really do have some holes at that position.

Is this a somewhat big story out there, or is it no big deal?

No, Carroll handled it from within by having the boosters cut his pay through the end of the season.

It's big when the pro-USC folks are writing front page stories about it.
