Not great competition, but another good win for the Hoosiers. Looks like Marshall Strickland is taking full advantge of being moved off the ball. If he is going to continue to shoot well, this could be a top 10 team before all is said and done. I like seeing these guys finally open it up a little and run. My one complaint about the Davis era has been the lack of offensive continuity. Now that he has the athletes, it looks like they're far more up-tempo. If DJ and Ratliff come back healthy, they're plenty deep, too.

Wilmont came back strong from suspension. It will be interesting to see how Davis gets minutes for Wilmont, Strickland, Suhr (who's been playing well), Ratliff, Vaden, Monroe and Calloway for 3 spots.

The key so far for the Hoosiers offense is making the extra pass. Way too many turnovers tonight, but on 75 baskets this year, they have 55 assists. They are making the extra pass this year and not relying on bringing the ball up and getting it to Bracey off of 17 screens anymore.

KU looked like the young team they are, but I'm not surprised. 'Zona is a tough matchup for team of freshmen and Sophomores. Still, we were in it till the last few minutes despite almost 30 TOs. I think we'll be pretty tough come March.

Fixed that for ya.

Michigan State bounces back and thumps Chaminade. They play Gonzaga tomorrow, who beat Maryland.

Elsewhere, Texas survived West Virginia by 1, and Iowa knocked off UK.

guys like brunner will kill us all year long if we don't get morris back.

Heck of a game tonight UK fans. I don't think either team played their best ball, but it had a March atmosphere.

I can't believe we were able to beat you guys with Horner/Haluska combining for 3-19 from the field. Bru was an animal inside, and Mike Henderson has really continued his development and improvement he showed down the stretch last year. Tony Freeman has been very impressive for a true freshman, especially in a game like tonight. He's great with the ball, very quick and a lockdown defender. That strip tonight in the closing seconds just isn't the kind of play you expect from a freshman. Alford coached a great game tonight, probably one of his best in-game performances in a big game.

Rondo is a great point guard and freak athlete with good instincts, but no shot. If he can develop a solid jumper he'll be dominant. You guys need Morris, but even without him will be very good. Sparks will see better days.

Illinois really missed the boat on Tony Freeman, he's a helluva player.

You're not the first Illini fan I've heard that from. Why didn't Bruce feel the same way? I'm honestly curious. From what I've read/heard he was a bit of a late bloomer in that he really elevated his game during his senior year after already committing to Iowa.

He sure looks the part so far and every report on him has been glowing. He's really acted like he's belonged from day one and has fit in wonderfully. No character or grade issues are always a plus with some of the recruiting troubles we've had.

Alford says he's the fastest player with the ball he's ever coached. He's been a lockdown defender and seems to have great court vision. There have been some mistakes that are expected of a freshman, but I think his future is really bright.

Thing is, Illinois knew they would/will need a point guard when Dee Brown eventually leaves. The only (silly) logic that I can think of is that they pull all their eggs in the Sherron Collins basket, figuring that if they landed him, Freeman would essentially be a backup PG at best. That's such flawed logic, but the only reasoning I can come up with at this point. Illinois really needs a commitment from Derrick Rose (even if only for one season) to at least solidify themselves in the Chicagoland area.

The Duke game next week will obviously be a better indicator of what kind of team IU has this year, but I doubt that we are going to stay in this one without DJ White in the paint alongside Killingsworth. Hopefully we'll meet up with Duke again in March.

The annual "Michigan State gets preseason top 5 billing" followed by

Michigan State drops out of the top 10/25" really got off to a blistering start this year.

Playing a brutal non-conference schedule every year will do that to you. It's worked out pretty well for them thus far I'd say.

i'm fully convinced that, despite making the NC game, the illini will never be able to sign a top 10 recruit again. gordon is waiting for the summer (ie waiting until a better offer comes along) and rose is probably a pipe dream. if we get rose and gordon however, the sky will not be falling. though, i thought we'd get scheyer and collins too, but if the illini can't lure talents like that after a season like last one, they'll never be able to.

i'm also convicned that -

a. no matter how many guards self has in the fold, he will always recruit guards from illinois, and they will always go to kansas, no matter how many bucknell games there are or how many times his teams unerachieve.

b. bruce weber is turning illinois into a mid-major. he can't even fill out a recruiting class for crying out loud. this is a guy, when at purdue, who never lost an illinois guy who he wanted.

c. matt painter, an unproven coach who rode weber's wave at SIU, is recruiting better at purdue--must be the slicked back hair that players like.

with all due respect, hawaii is not a brutal team.

They're a good team, and they're very good at home. I was also addressing the sentiment of the yearly occurrence too. They cramped up real bad in the second half of that game, and were much better in that aspect against Chaminade. But even disregarding Hawaii, they now have back-to-back games in back-to-back days against top-10 teams, plus Georgia Tech and BC in the next 2 weeks. That's the brutal I was referring to. I'll be happy if they go 2-2 in those games, hoping for 3-1.

I agree with all of your points except the last one. Painter's recruiting class was not all that stellar. Nate Minnoy, who dominated Wofford the other day is going to get killed in the Big Ten. He's 6' 3" and AT LEAST 260 pounds. Lacks athleticism and will be worn down by more up-tempo teams and guard oriented offenses (every team in the Big Ten except Wisky and OSU). Lutz and Marcus Green (who I saw play maybe 30 or 40 times) are going to be better big ten players than Minnoy.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves on Painter. None of the guys he brought in are highly touted players.

I understand that, but for the last 3 or 4 years, it seems to me that Michigan State is very overanked in the preseason polls. I follow the Big Ten pretty closely and for a few of those years I couldn't understand how they could possibly be ranked that high. It just didn't make sense. They do play well in the tourney so maybe that's it. I wasn't surprised to see them ranked so high this year, and I wasn't surpised that they lost their first game.

Honestly, you don't think they are a top 5 team in the country, do you? I'm not saying that they are a bad team, but I see them more as a 15-10 than a top five this year. I suppose my feelings are similar to my feelings about Michigan this year when everyone said they would be playing for a National Championship.

I don't know if they're a top 5 team, I haven't really seen them play(watching the Gonzaga game now). But with the talent they're returning, and given their finish last year it doesn't surprise me at all.

MSU certainly has top five talent. They will get a big boost when Matt Trannon comes back on board as well.

Need some muscle down low.

I thought UK played terrible, they missed way too many easy shots and cont. to shoot under 70 percent from the line. Shag hasn't been able to develop an inside game and Woo hasn't done anything wither. UK will need Morris and someone like Crawford to go along with Rondo to drive to the hoop.

I was terribly disappointed in that game.

Man, I hope everyone is watching Gonzaga vs Mich St right now, Morrison vs Ager is the new Ali vs Frazier.

Also Morrison has the worst stache i have ever seen. I cant figure out how someone could think that was a good idea. How could his friends let him out of the house like that?
