1997 - Rossum pushes the Navy receiver out at the one on the last second play to preserve the win.

I was there for that one. Absolutely terrifying, and the day I lost all faith in Bob Davie. 4th down for ND with about 8 seconds left. Rather than having Powlus(or a better idea, a QB with some mobility) run backwards then around in circles for 10 seconds, he has Powlus take the snap, step back about 4 yards, and DOWN IT WITH A SECOND LEFT.

I was at that game, too. Actually it was my first ever ND game in person. My grandfather wanted to beat the traffic so we left and we were in the concourse when we heard a giant gasp from the crowd. I didn't find out what happened until the next day. Go figure.

Davie was a moron.

Called a safety blitz when ND is beating MSU with time expiring. I guess he didn't think MSU would try a deep pass to win the game. MSU goes deep and wins the game. Same year ball on the 50 with time running out against #1 Nebraska. Instead of trying to get some yards and kick a GW fieldgoal he opts for OT and loses.

He once said the Rockne set the bar to high for other ND coaches. I guess winning is not the goal.

You forgot to mention that he did the same thing on a 3rd-and-11 late in the MSU game THE VERY NEXT YEAR and the same thing happened except it was Charlie Rogers instead of Herb Haygood scoring the TD.

I was at that one. I forever remember it as the "DAVIE YOU SUCK" game because an ND student yelled that during a silence in the game when an MSU player was having a seizure on the sideline. Completely audible to everyone in the stadium. We all cracked up.

Derwood, hows Penn States quarterback for next season gonna be? I see that Robinson is a senior, does State have anyone good for next season?

The kid next year is Anthony Morelli, a highly touted recruit who had verbally comitted to Pitt but then came to PSU instead. Paterno stupidly wasted a year on him by bringing him into a meaningless game last year, so he'll be a Junior in 2006. Still, that's 2 years with him and the freshman receiving corps (Williams, Butler, King).

He's much more of a drop back, pocket passer. Robinson is a poor man's Vince Young/Marcus Vick, while Morelli is much more of a Peyton Manning style passer (and if he's 5% as good as Manning, we'll be in good shape)

Agreed.

This has shades of the collapses 1998/1999 and 2001 when UCLA had undefeated teams. UCLA didn't recover at the 1999 Rose Bowl after the Miami loss (a win in Miami would have sent them to the national championship game) and it never recovered after a loss in Stanford (they were 6-0 and ranked #3 at the time, and ended the year 7-4). And that was with a more competent coach.

Hopefully the fact that it's Senior Day and the Bruins still have a solid chance at winning the Pac 10 and being BCS eligible will be enough to motivate these guys, but I expect a loss.

KU should have beaten them last year. We got jobbed by the officials. We also have the 5th best defense in the country, and they have the potential to keep us in games.

That said, the opening line was 35 points. I expect KU to keep it closer than that.

So do I, but Texas might finally be 100% healthy on offense for the first time in a while. Its going to be interesting to see how they play the 4 head backfield of Vince Young, Selvin Young, Jammal Charles, and Ramonce Taylor. Taylor will probably slot out to WR, but we saw last week why he needs to touch the ball 10+ time a game.

Texas wins 38-10

I'll say Texas 24-0. kU has a great D, but their offense is terrible, and Texas has proven that it can put up some points on strong defenses(see O$U).

Yeah kU has a great defense, but I think we're forgetting the fact that the Texas offense is just a bunch of men playing boys this season. I dont really care how good kU's defense is, Texas offense is just that much better. 41-10 UT.

Not to mention that Texas defense is super fast and big as well, meaning theyll create plenty of problems for kU's horrendous offense.

I like the Gators a lot, and I like Steve Spurrier, but gotta go with the Gators this weekend. Hopefully Auburn can beat Georgia so UF can go to the SEC championship game. Although I do like USC also, although Im from the midwest so if that is a no-no, someone let me know.

This is a post from a particularly knowledgeable poster on a PSU message board... I believe all the information here is on the mark:

Here's the real lowdown.

First, you need to know that the bowls have tie-ins. For this year, they are:

Rose Bowl: #1 team and #2 teams in BCS Poll.

Fiesta Bowl: B12 champ vs Pac10 champ (if Pac10 champ does not go to the BCS

game - this tie-in is in effect only in years that the Rose Bowl hosts the BCS

championship game).

Orange Bowl: ACC champ

Sugar Bowl: SEC champ.

Also, if any bowl's conference tie-in winds up in the BCS game the bowl has an opportunity to replace that team before any at-large selections are made.

Next, the at-large selection order rotates from year to year. This year the

order is - Orange, Fiesta, Sugar.

And lastly, the bowl selection committees, the BCS, and ABC can all meet in a backroom and redo everything if they choose to do so (I'm not kidding - that's an actual rule in the process).

The first step in the process is filling the Rose Bowl with the top two teams in the BCS (at the moment, that looks like Texas and USC).

The next step is to fill in the conference champion tie ins (at the moment that would look like: Alabama to the Sugar Bowl and Miami to the Orange Bowl).

The next step is to fill in the conference tie-in replacements (at the moment, that would give the Fiesta Bowl two picks - however, the Fiesta's deal with the Pac10 says that if they elect to use the replacement option for displacing the Pac10 champ the option must be used on another Pac10 team. Before this weekend,UCLA looked like a viable alternative to USC if USC was going to be in the Rose Bowl as the Pac10 champ. But UCLA now has one loss and if they lose to USC, they will have two. That means that the Fiesta Bowl will pass on the Pac10 replacement option. The Fiesta Bowl will use their B12 replacement option which currently looks like either an ND or PSU pick).

That now leaves three open slots in three bowls and this is where things get complicated. While there is a structured order to the selection process it's not quite as simple as just picking a team. What happens it that each bowl submits a prioritized list of three teams to the BCS committee. If there are any conference champions who haven't yet been placed in a bowl then those champions must be placed as the #1 or #2 pick of each of the bowls.

This is where things will get hairy - particularly if the Fiesta Bowl picks ND.

In that scenario, both PSU and the Big East champ (let's assume WVU) would be conference champs and must be place #1 or #2 by each of the bowls - undoubtedly, PSU would be first and WVU second. The Orange would have the first pick and would get PSU and in theory the Fiesta Bowl would be forced to wind up with West Virginia with the Sugar Bowl getting whomever is their #3 pick. That would cause some possible problems.

One, it sticks the Fiesta Bowl with the Big East champ two years in a row - something the Fiesta and the BCS wouldn't want.

Two, it could result in a rematch of LSU/Alabama in the Sugar Bowl - something ABC and the BCS wouldn't want. This would likely cause the final BCS placement rule to be invoked. Basically, it says that ABC, the bowls, and the BCS can get together in a back room and concoct whatever matchups they think will be most attractive for TV.

The net result of it all is that other than being pretty sure that the

conference champs will wind up in the tie-in bowls, everyone's opinion of who winds up where probably has some validity.

almost my exact prediction. When I said they'll keep it closer than 35, I didn't say how much closer.

Ok, it's Saturday. Time to bump this thread back up.

Noon (EST) games include NU/OSU, Clemson/Florida St. and others.

I'll probably catch some of the Northwestern game, then watch Alabama and LSU

Posted

My plan for the day is thus:

1 pm - ND/Navy

4 pm - BSU basketball exhibition game

6 pm - listen to BSU/EMU on radio

8:30 pm - Bulls/Jazz on WGN Superstation

This could be a fantastic day or an utterly depressing one.

Posted

Northwestern plays 4 quarters, Mr. pregame guy? Have you not watched any NU game other than @ MSU?

Northwestern starts on offense for the first time in Big Ten play. And I don't like it.

Posted

Sutton breaks it for 34 yards! 1st and goal!

Baz has threaded the needle twice so far this drive. Impressive.

Baz hits Tyrell "Mr. Ohio" Sutton for the score!!!

Posted

Just kick it out of bounds each time and give it to them at the 35.

Ugh. That would've been a huge turnover.

Posted

Not sure why Slade is back there, but our punting and special teams coverage are terrible...

Pitman leaving the game.

By the way, if there's anyone else watching, did Smith get that last TD? It looked like the cameras showed him down at the half yard line.

Posted

Yeah, Smith was down at the half-yard line and should've been 4th and goal. Not like it would have mattered, but you never know.

Ohio State has started their drives from the NU 45 and from the NU 29. If the offense can't drive the ball consistently downfield to help make up for the crappy punting, this game will get out of hand pretty quickly.

Posted

Well that was quicker than I thought. I've seen better special teams in high school.

That should just about wrap this one up. Ohio State scores 21 points without having to do much on offense.
