I can't wait to hear the beating Penn State will take next year for having a Div. 1-AA team on the schedule (by no fault of their own)

I heard about that. Who was it that cancelled on them again?

IIRC it was Alabama, they were worried about sucking too badly after the NCAA sanctions so they backed out of the home and home with PSU and put in a couple of cream puffs instead.

That really isn't fair. How does I-AA get figured into stuff like the computer polls? Does it just not count as a win at all? Or does it give a big hit to the SOS?

A I-AA win doesn't count as a win towards bowl games. You need to have seven I-A wins on the 12-game schedule to be bowl-eligible. And I believe it would really kill the SOS.

If ND played in the big ten their schedule would be tougher this year. This probably isnt the case everyear. If they played a Big Ten schedule with USC, Brigham YOung and Navy this year, that would be a pretty good schedule.

How much of their improvement this year may be based on not as strong of a schedule and maturing players? everyone says Weiss but I think these other factors need to be put in. Would Willingham have them 7-2? I am not saying Weiss is bad but usually too much credit goes to new coaches for turning things around and all the circumstances are not considered. I think Willingham would probably have them 6-3 and ranked about 20

This team would not be nearly as good as it appears to be without Weis. Ty is just not a very good coach. Many players on the team have said they learned things about their position they never knew until this year. They have said they understand the game more and are more confident. There really is an attitude to this team that has not been seen since Holtz left. Ty did not just lose games, the teams he put on the field were dominated for the most part. While he did have some big wins, he also had some losses that should not have happened.

Can they petition to have them count?

I thought that a Div 1AA can count as a win to be bowl eligible but not every year. They can use that win only one every 3-4 years or something like that.

The University of Minnesota beat up on Division 1-AA foe, Illinois State last week. The NCAA might have chosen to take a leadership role in discouraging this kind of patty-cake scheduling, but as is usually the case, the NCAA looked this opportunity in the eye and coughed up a hairball. According to NCAA counting rules, this victory might be used by the Gophers if they need one to be declared “bowl eligible” this year. The “rule” is that a team has to have won 6 games to get into a bowl game but that rule may be waived under certain circumstances. However, if a team uses a victory over a 1-AA school this year, then it can't use that kind of victory again for 3 years.
