Jon has officially gone off the deep end. Welcome to our world, Jon. Welcome to our world.

That happened in August. I just haven't wanted to think about the Cubs much since then.

Count me in regarding that baseball malaise. It just got too painful.

Well Jon, no world series, but there's still hope for...

Well, I am more optimistic about beating Ohio State than I am about the Cubs right now.

And that's saying something.

to think that i used to come to this board for intelligent insights. i will also be quite disapointed if nefi is anything but a backup but 30 pages on the signing of nefi as if it signals the end of the 2006 & 2007 seasons? lighten up already.

Definitely some overaction. Maybe Cedeno's part of a package that gets the Cubs a OF or starting pitcher. It's still early...

maybe you missed this...$5M / 2 years. that's not "backup" money.

The fact that he's getting paid like that may not be good, but it is not the reason that he may start.

Buttermaker is.

Is that sarcasm always necessary?

This signing stinks, but I am personaly holding out hope that JH will get his act together over the next couple of weeks and produce a booty (sticking with the recent pirate theme on the news) of Abreu or Giles, Furcal, and at least on other player to get excited about.

Some teams use the off-season to progress or regress, these two moves point to stagnation. Could it be part of a master plan? Sure, face value tells me these two moves whether Rusch is a 6th starter or Neifi as the utility are extremely overpaid for their production.

There would have been no teams willing to spend that type of money for those two and as they did with Maddux, the Cubs end up losing bid wars against themselves.

Regardless of their potential roles, they are way overpaid in both years and dollars.

My beliefs towards a building and maintaining a productive team and the Cubs beliefs run completely against each other and it frustrates the hell out of me.

yup. and you can be sure JH never would have inked Neifi to that contract if the serpent wasn't whispering in his ear.

I was hoping the Cubs could had played this thing smart. I was hoping they would not either re-sign or sign a bunch of old guys who can’t even remember their primes. Nobody wants Neifi Perez.

In other words, I was hoping the Cubs would sign players who fit into the plan — get a little speed, a little defense, a guy who can get on base, a solid veteran pitcher who can eat up some innings and take some pressure off the kids.

So much for that eh?

Looking @ it from an optimistic perspective, it gives the Cubs the ability to use Jerome Williams, Rich Hill & Cedeno in a trade or trades, which can net a starting pitcher or OF.

Why? We have Rusch! \:D/

But seriously, if we're not going to actually play what our farm system produces (those that are ready for the bigs), then we might as well trade them away for players Dusty will actually let get off the pine and play.

We also could have kept Williams and Cedeno and used that money on free agents that could actually help this team. If you feel Cedeno should be the starter, then go out and pick up D'Angelo Jimenez for 750K and call it a day.

It is absolutely pointless as UK stated, to spend a ridiculous amount of money on crap players. No matter how this ends up spinning out, at the end of this offseason, we will still be paying Neifi 2.5m for the next two years. Nothing that happens from this point forward will turn this into a "good" deal.

With a thin free agent market, the Cubs are going to have to deal off some players to fill needs. Neifi & Rusch don't have the trade value of the youngsters, especially when you're try to pick players off teams like Tampa and Cincy. If Williams & Hill help the Cubs land Abreu, I'm pretty dang happy that they brought Rusch back.

EDIT: well actually they can't be dealt, but can provide similar production,.....

Maybe this will become possible if the Trib sells the team. It appears they won't take chances on giving 35 year olds 3-4 year contracts for $10 mil per. *shrug*

Not to be insensitive or anything, but I can only imagine what this will do to Grudz's market value (or any other middle infield on the market). Thanks, Hendry.

Hopefully, it takes the Cards out of the Giles sweepstakes.

I'm glad time, effort and resources went into re-signing a redundant, replaceable and utterly unnecessary player when gaping holes in the outfield still exist.

Oops. Sorry. I forgot that since Neifi signed a two year deal, we can't judge it until the 2007 offseason.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Trib. Why would the Trib care whether Hendry spent 100m on 40 Neifi Perez's or 10 Brian Giles? The fact they increased the budget to 100m tells me they want to win a World Series. The fact they are trusting someone who doesn't appear to have the intelligence to make it happen (Hendry) is their weakness. A weakness they probably won't realize until it is too late.
