I wonder if the Devil Rays would consider trading Rocco Baldelli and if the Cubs would have any interest there.

He's not the masher that most of us want, but he seems like the kind of guy the Cubs might hold in high regard.

The Rays boy wonder Andrew Freidman was discussing a 6-year deal with Baldelli before it was put on the back-burner until the GM/Manager searches were complete. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs a long-term deal in Tampa this winter.

Let's see. In TB's outfield, the potential guys who could be seeing action there next season includes:

Delmon Young (depending on what ownership decides)

Jonny Gomes

Joey Gathright

Rocco Baldelli

Aubrey Huff

Carl Crawford

Interesting. Combine that with the talk that they might move BJ Upton into the OF and the fact that Elijah Dukes could do well enough in AAA to merit a callup at some point next season, they have a decidedly bizarre (yet enviable) OF situation.

Too bad that they will still be almost 30 games below .500 again.

Yet somehow they managed to be one of the hottest teams in baseball in the second half and managed to knock the Yankees around on a regular basis.

What an odd team.

Other than Huff, who do they end up trading?

Burnett would be alright, i'd prefer Washburn though..

Washburn isn't as overrated and is a LEFTY. I believe that we need at least one lefty in the rotation. Don't get me wrong, I'd love Burnett but Washburn won't demand as much and probably won't want as many years as Burnett wants.

Why? I never understood the fascination with having a lefty in the rotation. What exactly is the point?

 I hope you weren't expecting a reasonable answer to that.

First:  ON AJ Burnett. I had heard rumors that the Cubs might be interested, but not interested enough to go after. But I don't know if I can take two Kerry Wood's on one team, tho.

Second: I think we can all forget about Brian Giles. It will be either the Angels (home, a contender) or the Cards. I don't see the Cubs be a big part of the sweepstakes, hence the increase interests of Furcal and Burnett.

I don't think those things are necessarily mutually exclusive.

Not likely that Baldelli signs any long term extension. First of all his agent is Boras, and we all know he will not want any deal that takes his client away from a free agent windfall. Secondly, I think Baldelli is sick of the losing and really wants to get out of TB. His dream would probably be to play CF for the Red Sox so I think he will avoid signing any contract that will keep him from having that chance asap.

Hey, I didn't say they were "mutally exclusive", I'm just saying, Hendry may just turn his attention to players that have shown interests in the Cubs (Furcal/Burnett), over players not over-joyed about the prospects of playing for the Cubs (Giles)..

Is this just your opinion or do you have some evidence to suggest that Giles doesn't have any interest in coming to the Cubs?

I'd jump all over Baldelli for some pitching. It would take a lot to get him, but coming off his injury, he may be more available than alot of those other guys. He doesn't have the plate discipline yet, but he has superstar potential and is still very young. TB could still field an OF if Gomes, Crawford, Young (LF-to-RF). Or they could keep Crawford in LF, with Hollins (who they inexplicably love) and Gathright in CF. Gomes could DH.

I could see Baldelli being more available than Gomes, Crawford, and certainly Delmon.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. More asking your opinion. But what is the big deal about Baldelli?

He had one really good season at Bakersfield in A-ball. Other than that, he hasn't put together any great numbers. His .326 OBP at the major league level isn't great. His strikeout to walk ratio isn't great. He put up his numbers at a young age, so I can understand people's expectation for him to improve, but his minor league numbers aren't consistently good enough to support this expectation. So why is Baldelli considered such a catch?

He improved from 03 to 04 in every single category but batting average. He was the top rated HS player coming into the 2000 draft. He's 6'4" and an amazing athlete. He put up solid number as a 21 and 22 year old. Sure his plate discipline isn't good. But he has all the talent in the world.

Baldelli has horrible plate discipline. Horrible. He's been consistently crappy from day 1. No thanks. We don't need CPat Jr. in center field.

Baldelli has also hit .289 and .281 in his 2 seasons. He's a much better hitter than Patterson. And you have ridiculously high standards if you call the seasons Baldelli had at 21 and 22, respectively, crappy.

He is not entirely crappy, but i'm guessing you would want more out of your RF than what he has shown to date.

Yeah. But what does that have to do with anything?

His point was that the Cubs don't need a player like Badelli. His comparison may have been a little bit of a stretch, but it doesn't change the fact that the Cubs should try to do better than Baldelli.

he hit .289/.326/.416 and .280/.326/.436 in his first two seasons. his obp sucks b/c he strikes out three times for every walk he takes (he's always been that way). it's amazing that he can be well above average in BA, but below average in OBP.

i like his speed and he has ok power, but his plate discipline scares me.

That's really suprising. I also think it's a clear sign they're going to move at least 1 OF this winter. I don't want Huff, but if Hendry is set on Pierre, would Crawford be better?

Outshined_One has already posted Crawford's numbers in a different thread, and Crawford seems like little more than Patterson with less power and slightly better hitting. No thanks.
