Per Bruce Levine...

I thought it would be posted already, but at the very least, nobody has started a thread on it.

According to the report, Hendry will start the full-court press on Burnett next week.

They also mentioned that if Hendry doesn't succeed in signing Furcal, THEN he will inquire with the Marlins about Pierre...

Goes against what a few here were saying that the rotation was set with Rusch/Williams to take the final spot.

I'm glad Hendry is going after more starting pitching, but I wish he were going after Millwood instead of Burnett. I'm also glad to see that Furcal is higher on Hendry's list than Pierre is.

offense please.

Yea, I want offense too. But, I don't want to deal with Rusch having a virtually assured spot in the rotation. When/if he has to fill in for injuries here and there, I can live with it. But otherwise, please no.

Also, I don't think signing Burnett and Furcal would be the full extent of our moves either. I'm pretty sure Hendry is aware of the need for a big bat in the OF, and we've heard about his interest in Giles. I just think he's made the mistake of prioritizing a speedy leadoff man over the other power bat.. but I'm sure he's aware of both needs.

Just imagine if we came away from this cruddy free agent class with Furcal, Giles, and Burnett..

By the way... are all three of these guys type A? And if they are, could someone help me out and post the limitations on how many type A's we can sign? It's been posted before, but I really don't remember what they are.

I would love to have Burnett here but at what expense? If it means a weak OF again no thanks, but if we somehow can get Furcal, Giles, Burnett hey that will be great but I doubt that will happen. Proceed with caution.

I applaud this. Kerry and Maddux are gone after 2006, so why not get ahead of the curve and seek replacements now? Our window will soon be closing anyway, and IMO it would be foolish to trust Kerry to stay healthy enough to start all year. Whether it's Burnett or Millwood or whoever, we need another top shelf SP.

man, imagine the posisbilities if we did not have that 9mil contract for Maddux.

I like Burnett. Although I would like to have Millwood as my #1 choice, my guess is he re-signs with the Tribe. Burnett has awesome stuff, but could he be another Woody? Only time will tell. As far as the outfield, i would bet that we will have Kearns sometime this winter. Just a guess.

Is our goal to fill the whole 25 man with pitchers?

I'm pretty sure Dusty wanted 15 pitchers, 8 starting position players, and then Neifi and Macias rounding out the roster.

I'm guessing if we sign Burnett, a few of those pitchers will be going...especially Williams.

Maybe Hendry is trying to build a powerhouse here... if he goes out and gets Giles, Furcal, and AJ, he'd be well on his way. The offense would be solid and the starting pitching would be absurd.

We can only dream...

I've said it before, if healthy (BIG IF, I KNOW), that rotation would be incredibly imposing, especially in the playoffs...

Z, Prior, Burnett, Wood, Maddux.. =P~ =P~ =P~

Seriously... We could put Burnett into the rotation and Williams could take the 5th spot.. Then we'd have an extra 9 mil free to do whatever we wanted...

My prediction is Kerry will end 2006 as the world's most expensive setup man.

With the money the Cubs have to spend along with the weak FA class, I would hope to see the Cubs mentioned with every top FA. I'd pursue Furcal, Giles, and Burnett. It isn't likely we sign all of them...probably not likely to sign even two of them, but if we heavily pursue all of them we greatly increase or chances of at least getting one of them.

The Cubs probably could afford all three for this year; it would be affording them plus raises to Prior and Zambrano that could handcuff them in the future.

True, some expensive pitcher has to take Woods place on the DL.

I'll sit back and see what Hendry does to find out what team he has in place in the spring.

Here's hoping you're wrong, very very wrong.

Can anyone take a guess at what kind of deal Burnett would get from us?

4/40 mil is probably what it would take.

I bet he gets more $ then Pavano. I'll go 4/44.

Me too. 4/55 is my geuss.

what about guys like williams, hill, pinto, & perhaps guzman & marshall (if they can stay healthy) to go along with prior, z & rusch?
