Rothschild is a good pitching coach. He's just not a great one.

Every coach is going to have guys he's able to bring along and ones that he's not. Larry has done a very good job with some of the pitchers on the staff, including Clement, Dempster, Z and others. He's not done as well with some others. I'd like to see a much greater focus on bio-mechanics, hence my preference for House and Peterson.

But Larry is not a bad PC at all.

Other than the conventional wisdom that says he's good, I've seen no proof. I don't think he did a very good job with Clement or Dempster. Clement was the same inconsistent occasional train wreck when he left the team as he was when he arrived. And Dempster is still a wild man who lets too many men reach base. The only reason he was successful was the move to the pen, where the 1 inning tight rope proved easier to walk than the 5-7 inning inevitable failure. Also, I don't see how Z is any better with Larry than without. Frankly, I was hoping for more by now, with him. He obviously can't help pitchers prevent injury worth a damn, nobody has great form. He doesn't seem to concerned with stopping Dusty from abusing guys to the extreme. He hasn't helped control the efficiency of pitchers'. So far, the only thing he seems to have done well is build up a reputation he had before even coming to the Cubs.

from that article

In his four years as Cubs pitching coach, Rothschild has helped in the development of Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano and other young pitchers.

uhm... NO.

What are you talking about!?!?

Prior has developed from the next Pedro Martinez to the next Steve Trachsel.

Wood has developed from the next Roger Clemmons to the next Scott Shields.

And Zambrano has went from, well, the next Bartolo Colon to the next Bartolo Colon.

I was absolutely certain that there was no way Rothschild would be back for two reasons:

1. He's not one of Dusty's boys.

2. Dusty needs a scapegoat.

There were times this year when I expressed anger at Rothschild's handling of the pitching staff and my desire to see him replaced. But after thinking about it I'm not sure that would have solved anything. More than likely Dick Pole would have been elevated to pitching coach over Rick Kranitz for the simple reason that he's one of Dusty's boys. How much would have really changed?

As someone else has pointed out, keeping Rothschild isn't necessarily a mistake. But keeping Sarge and Clines is beyond insane.

With that said, the fundamental problem is the manager, the coaching staff is just a symptom.

I just don't see any reason why he deserves to keep his job with the Cubs. I'm sorry it may not be his fault, but when your trying to win a championship and you get results from your pitching staff as a whole like he did, there is no reason to be nice and think that he wasn't at fault.

And yet, the manager is a sympton of the GM, the guy who went hard after him, bid against himself, overpaid, and stuck by him through repeated garbage.

I guess the silver lining, if there is one, is the entire coaching staff, including Baker, has one year on their contracts.

True, they are almost painting it as a "this has to be the year" kind of light. Of course, two year extensions in the spring will change all that.

True. If these guys don't step it up Hendry better make a move or he too should be gone. I still don't understand what Hendry sees in Baker.

Or a fast start by the Cubs. God knows that's when Perez hits 350.

Hendry must be pissed that his plan to pay 1/2 of Rothschild's salary in Detroit fell through

But seriously, I don't see any changes at all. Unless attendance drops, the Trib Co. doesn't give a rat's butt who the GM/Manager/Staff are. They probably don't even know who is on the team these days.

Honestly, what member of this coaching staff has done anything to warrant being kept around? Besides make a lot of money and plenty of excuses.

It's the 2 out of 3 rule. Good at excuses and making money but bad at coaching.

How can zero heads roll after the debacle that was known as the 2005 season? The entire coaching staff is returning? Possible contract extentions for the manager and the GM? This is bizarro world.

Yes, it is beyond ridiculous. And people wonder why it's been so long foru us to make it to the WS.

Dusty names Jose Macias as his 2nd hitter, centerfielder, 1st guy off bench in every game he does not start

That will be the 2nd part of that headline

Then on August 1st it will be:

Cubs deal Derrek, Ramirez due to low RBI totals

I've pointed this out before, but I think Larry works better with sinker/slider guys than power pitchers like Wood/Prior. In addition to the guys I mentioned earlier, he's helped Wuertz become a much more dominant pitcher (when not gassed) than he was as a minor leaguer. I'll reiterate. I think Larry is a good pitching coach, but there are other guys I'd prefer.

The guys I like better probably aren't available anyway, though.

Tommorow's headline:

Entire bench get 3 year deals, raises. Neifi Perez named opening day starter at SS, leadoff

Tomorrow's editorial: Cubs were actually good last year. You are all mistaken. Keep buying tickets
