I'll wait for financial terms to come out before I give it a true thumbs-up, but it is good to have him locked up for next year. I don't know if I want him to close next year, but at the very least he's a back-up plan if we don't get someone better.

I agree. This could be good news or bad news depending on the pricetag.

Do you really see it being higher than like a $12-14m contract over 3 years? Hendry only overpays for his bench players. Dempster also has only had 1 good season in the pen, so it wouldn't make sense to pay him a premium based on that?

AP[/url]"]Chicago Cubs closer Ryan Dempster agreed Saturday to a $15.5 million, three-year contract extension through the 2008 season.

.....

"Obviously, it's been one of those things that you're really happy about," Dempster said. "It shows a lot of respect for me and I have a lot of respect for the way they've handled me. I'm glad to be here for three more years. Hopefully, I can help them reach their goals and get to the World Series."

.....

"It's a big day for me in my career to get some security like that," Dempster said. "It's definitely a little surreal."

So $5m per. That seems okay.

5.x mil. more than I though it would be.

Hopefully this signals a change in the way Hendry operated compared to last season. He left ARam's extension until Opening Day last year instead of getting it done and over with early in the offseason; hopefully this signals a proactive and aggressive winter for Hendry and the Cubs.

3/$15.5M isn't horrible in this market.

5M per year (roughly) doesn't worry me. the 3 years does. i don't remember any of our bullpen arms performing as advertized for 3 years in a row.

Well, the last 2 pen guys we signed for 3 years were Remlinger, who was used incorrectly and then finally showed his age in the 3rd year, and Hawkins, who just wilted in the spotlight. I don't think Dempster will wilt, as he's been closing all season, and he's still a young guy comparatively, so there's not too much to worry about there.

Besides, by the time the 3rd year comes around the next wave of arms should be coming through, so we might have a replacement in place this time.

I can live with $5 million per. Given our recent track record of giving long-term deals to relievers I'm not thrilled with the 3 years, but Dempster has earned this extension with his 2005 performance.

Hopefully that proactive approach involves signing BJ Ryan.

Agreed. This year Demspter has proven that he can close for US. I thought he would sign for 4mil but that's ok. If he can pitch how he did this year for us we're good.

I like this signing. The Cubs are a lot better with Dempster than they would be without him. What is the bullpen looking like next year?

Van Buren

Wuertz

Ohman

Novoa

Free Agent? Bartosh? A. Guzman?

Dempster

If Hendry stays in-house, he can afford to slightly overpay for Dempster's services.

I don't think there's as much of a need for BJ Ryan now that Dempster has been signed, presumably to close. BJ isn't going to come here to set up games, and even if he did he's not going to be cheap.

Having said that, if BJ wanted to come here for about the same money as Dempster got specifically to set up, then yeah, sure, awesome. But I see a Boston or NYM paying his a premium to close.

I have to be honest i'm having a quiet sat night here in London, I've just opened a beer having read this. Made my weekend, not only am i impressed with the job ryan has done but he seems a stand up guy in the club house. Whenever good times surround the team either jokes, celebrations or being a good team mate his name comes up. Just D-Lee and Nomar to go......
