well with zero chance of DePo letting Dusty manage his team, at least this rumor has some plausibility. Lets all root for a horrendous second half slide (or rather contiunation) for the Nats so Frank gets tired of lacing up the cleats and takes an ownership role, leaving the most idiotic GM in baseball (although Sabean, O'brien and others are trying to compete) most likely drooling over Baker. Lets trade Baker for Ryan Church!

Washington. If he wants to leave Jim, just let him go.

How long will this take for him to deny this one too?

Like the rumors with Dodgers, this article seems to be more speculation than anything concrete. But one has to wonder, if there is actually some smoke to this "Dusty wants out of Chicago" fire. One wonders, perhaps, if Dusty is not sending out signals through intermediaries that he is unhappy. Remember that article out of San Francisco earlier this year -- according to a "close friend" -- that if the Cubs didn't win, this would be his last year in Chicago? Keep in mind, Dusty seems to be very sensitive to criticism, and never in his entire managing career has he felt such heat before.

What's interesting is that even if these rumors are entirely BS, with no factual basis whatsoever, they kind of take on a life of their own. The Dodger rumor may have originated from the fevered imagination of some sportswriter for the L.A. Times (a paper owned by the Chicago Tribune, hmmm :-k), but that in itself kicks up a media storm. An innocuous column in the LA paper leads to speculation on internet message boards, leads to a race-baiting column from Scoop Jackson, leads to a response and rebuttal from Jay Mariotti, leads to angry denials by Dusty, leads to a vote of confidence from Hendry, leads to a speculating article from the Washington Times...leads to more and more fan and media speculation and the cycle intensifies. After the dust settles (oh my sides), what may have been nothing, becomes "something".

Note to Dusty: I hear there are some pretty good schools in Northern Virgina.

I do think that a lot of this is made up. Cubs underperforming so Baker might be gone, so what team might want him, etc. These rumors remind me of the trade deadline: Cubs need a LF so they're close to getting Dunn, Floyd, Kearns, Huff, etc.

The funny thing is, most of the Nationals fans that read this are probably really excited about the possiblity of Dusty.

Interesting... I remember the majority of us Cub fans on cubs.com were excited about getting the "Dustbuster" too, even while SF fans were warning us about everything we're now complaining about. :?

He wins just enough to satisfy you at first, but cannot win much more than that.

I doubt that the rumors ae 100% accurate, probably not even close to accurate. But Dusty is not someone who takes the heat well so he has probably mouthed off to some associates and a few people ran with it.

I don't doubt that he would prefer to be somewhere else ( esp the west coast where his home is) but even if Tracy goes, DePodesta would not hire Dusty to manage a sabermetrically constructed team. Nor would Oakland. SF would never rehire him. The Angels have a great manager. That leaves SD and Seattle out west, neither with a big payroll .

The more of these rumors I hear, the more I'm thinking he's gone after this year. I remember Larry Brown was saying he wanted to stay in Detroit. Whatever. Bye bye Dusty.

I have been a Dusty supporter in the past. But no more. I'm man enough to admit I was wrong. He's a motivator, yes, but someone has to take the blame for underachieving the last 2 year.

I'm sick of his stubborness in personnel choices, and I'm sick of the undisciplined play that is killing this team. Injuries are no excuse.

Does anyone remember the circumstances of Dusty's leaving SF. Wasn't the team successful, but they didn't try to keep him?

Hehe. Check out this tidbit:

Those comments stirred criticism of Baker from Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, which in turn was criticized by an ESPN columnist named Scoop Jackson (a name so ridiculous I am embarrassed to even write it)

But on topic, say Dusty does leave. Who's gonna take his place? Sarge? Does anyone else recognize the possibility that whoever takes Dusty's place might actually be worse?

Well, if Dusty is gone, I'd have to imagine the rest of the coaching staff would be shown the door too. So I don't think it would be Sarge. I want Ron Gardenhire. Whatever it takes. Offer him a bunch of money.

And another four year contract?

I'm not saying that Dusty should stay, but sometimes one in the hand is worth two in the bush eh?

If it's Dusty in hand, I'll gladly take whatever's in the bush.

Jim Leyland is also out there, and is interested in managing again, but Little makes the most sense, and he is a very good manager.

There is always the possibility his replacement could be worse, but I think it's highly unlikely.

"Does anyone remember the circumstances of Dusty's leaving SF. Wasn't the team successful, but they didn't try to keep him? "

Yes, the team was successful. He left after the 2002 season when the Giants lost the WS to the Angels.

I work in the Bay Area so I was able to follow some of it . There seemed to be problems behind the scenes with upper management, especially Sabean.

The fan base grew to be as critical as we are, pretty much for the same reasons. That's why I wasn't happy with him coming to the Cubs. The Giants aged as a team dramatically because, as we know, he prefered veterans and gave little chance to the younger players despite what he says.

He's the type of manager that needs a veteran team because he doesn't like to teach and has little tolerance for rookie mistakes. He also doesn't like to correct his players so he needs experienced guys who know better.

I would call him a people person and a master motivator.

But as we see the last 2 years, motivating without correcting serious problems just doesn't get it done.

The last couple of years in SF the media started picking at him and we know how he can't take the heat. They were esp critical of some of his decisions in the WS. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he would leave after 2002. And despite his relative success there, nobody shed many tears.

I remember going to Giants message boards after we signed him, and many of them were ecstatic. They also told me all of the things he would do to make the team worse, but I thought it was sour grapes. I was happy we signed him. Now he has done all of the things Giants fans told me he would do, and I want him gone.

Now I know he passed over many young players in SF just as he ids doing here, but I can't remember many of the names. It is alarming how old the Giants got under Baker, and they are suffereing for it now.
