I'm spot starting today and this is my Game Thread Starter debut! :)

So, today's game was frustrating as the Cubs couldn't score off of Tony Armas and we fell 4-2 to the Nationals, but we have to put that behind us and just concentrate on winning this last game of the series to avoid the sweep. Here is the pitching matchup:

Carlos Zambrano

http://images.sportsline.com/images/baseball/mlb/players/60x80/223692.jpg

5-4, 3.93 ERA

Z is coming off a sterling outing against Milwaukee on June 28th in which he went 8 innings and gave up 0 runs while only allowing 3 hits on his way to his 5th victory of the season.

vs.

Ryan Drese

http://images.sportsline.com/images/baseball/mlb/players/60x80/212017.jpg

6-7, 5.68 ERA

Drese was acquired by the Nationals in early June, and in 3 starts with them, he has a 2-1 record and a 2.84 ERA. His last start came against the Pirates on June 28th and he held them to just 1 run on 5 hits in 8 innings of work for the win. Let's hope the bats can cool down the little hot streak he's been on in his last few outings.

PLEASE WIN !

Posted

Drese is a pitcher who can be great one time out and completely horrible the next. Texas grew so tired of it, they put him on waivers.

Let's hope the really bad Drese shows up.

He will walk hitters and can be hit if you get ahead in the count. Our hitters must be patient.

I'll be listening to this one on the XM tomorrow as I make my way to Atlanta for Mon-Wed games.

CUBS are 20-14 when Dubois starts in left field, 20-25 when he doesn't

Has anyone other than Dubois/Holla started in LF this season?

CUBS are 27-31 when Barrett catches, 13-8 when Blanco starts.

Has Blanco caught games other than Prior, Z for a few starts, and Maddux in interleague play?

I <3 Fred's stats!

But of course! :D

Dempster 2

Hey Fred, could you post the team's offensive stats so far this year and last year on the last game of a series? I am curious to see if the totals are lower than the overall average due to the way that Dusty always seems to configure the lineup. I'm not even sure you could do that....

I can't really isolate the statistics for the last game of a series, because that isn't a variable that I captured in the database. This table may provide you with a suitable proxy. This is 2005 only, since the numbers I kept for 2004 were nowhere near as comprehensive.

if we can get a solid lead off guy I'd love to see alot more games caught by blanco.

I know, I know. Barrett has the better bat, but in limited time, blanco has the stats that count --- Ws.

The Score is reporting on their updates that Patterson is sitting today, Hairston is leading off and playing CF, Todd Walker will bat 2nd. Perez is hitting 7th.

'bout damn time, Dusty.

I'd bat that line-up from now until the break and see if Hairston can handle CF on a full-time basis.

I wouldn't mind seeing Barrett hitting 7th instead of 8th, but I think this is a step in the right direction. I sure hope the two headed LF monster of Hollandsworth and Dubois sure pick up the slack otherwise Ramirez isn't going to see anything close to a get pitch. Then again, if Dusty would put Lee and Ramirez back to back in the 3/4 spots, Burnitz would provide that valuable protection.

I'd like to believe we'll never see Neifi at the top of the lineup again, but I'm skeptical. Worst thing that could happen now is Neifi has a few good games. Then back to the top he goes til August.

Nope, I refuse to believe this is true....not until I see it...Dusty getting a lineup (minus Cedeno) correct is beyond the realm of my imagination.
