haven't watched any hawks games this year. are they close to having a playoff-caliber team? i'm not talking about winning the stanley cup anytime soon but just making the playoffs/"happy to be here" mode.

They are playing playoff caliber (as in 2nd wild card sacrificial lamb) hockey right now

They are 9-3-3 in their last 15 games. They are legitimately playing good hockey.

I'm not putting labels on it.  Outside of being a legit contender, watching a young team with a still to be defined ceiling figure it out is about as good as it gets in sports.

what a great trade that was to get knight + a 1st for seth jones. florida is currently 9-8-1, so that pick could be pretty nice, too

Too early to bring it up now, but Hawks could certainly be buyers at the trade deadline. They have 5 picks in the first two rounds and 15m under the cap and over 50m available next year.

Another hat trick for Bedard

First goal was straight up hilarious.

Second Bedard goal was a beautiful feed from Ryan Greene (who is turning into a very nice player)..

Oliver Moore scores.

This team is simply fun to watch.

The current NHL points leaderboard is pretty cool:

1. MacKinnon (2013 1st overall pick) - 33

2. McDavid (2015 1st overall pick) - 30

2. Celebrini (2024 1st overall pick) - 30

4. Bedard (2023 1st overall pick) - 29

The only teams in the west with a higher points percentage than Chicago (.632) are Colorado, Dallas and Anaheim. They are tied with Winnipeg and Vegas. 10 teams are below them. 13 more teams in the East are below them, including the entire Atlantic division.

Carolina and New Jersey are the only teams in the east ahead of them in points %.

That's not quite current. Celebrini and Bedard both had three more points last night.

I'm hoping Davidson sticks with the process for this season and doesn't get overly excited at the deadline. I don't think this team is nearly Cup-ready yet. But hot damn, they are playing much better than expected so far.

I thought the numbers looked a bit off - I assumed hockey-reference would be updated by 2 pm. Either way, the same four are the top 4 currently.

Lev is looking good, Knight is looking good, and the Hawks future is looking good

I have big concerns about Levshunov. He gets a pass because of his age… for now.

I don't have big concerns for Lev. You got to give young dman the time to developed. Not every young DMan can enter the league and be a Cale Makar.

-----------

As for the game, I'm so tired of the ref show. 98 has to be better but the refs needs to grow a pair and not take anything said on the ice seriously.

My expectations were never high. His positioning and effort (at times) is worrisome, regardless of age.

so happy the black unis are back

Enough time has passed that they feel fresh again.

I have a black Amonte sweater packed away somewhere.

Offensively, yes.

Not even worried about his defense right now because he is 20 years old and has yet to play in 40 games at the NHL level.  Get back with me, once he hit say....150 games or so.

I wish I could get into hockey. I used to love playing on the lake and watching games live when I was in college, but I can't get into it when I watch on TV.
