Before the season the starting rotation was mediocre at best.  With Steele out, it became middle of the pack.  The bats overperformed for 1/2 the year.  No way they can carry this rotation for a full season.

If they were getting shut down by an ace, I'd shrug and move on. But 9 LOB and constant guys on base with no runs is just inexcusable

this is REALLY frustrating.  It feels to me like we might not score a run again this year.  Of course I know that's ridiculous but when you can't score against the pitching we faced last night, what else are you to think.  It's just really hard to watch and it looks like our guys are all pressing.

7.5 game cushion, so it would be quite a collapse still. i can't even imagine how ugly things will get if they blow the playoffs and then let tucker go

They had a 6.5 game lead on the Brewers, although at a much early point of the season.

This is the part of the season, imo, you either stack wins or you lose ground in the standings. The Cubs are allergic to stacking wins, so...

Don't get this twisted, I want the cubs to make playoffs, but currently they are not convincing me they are a playoff team.

It's also really difficult being on the other end of a team going on a historic run like the Brewers have. It'd be one thing if the Cubs and Brewers had been dueling for 1st since day 1, but seeing a large lead evaporate and then fade into the distance over the course of two months is the diarrhea on top of a horsefeathers sundae. It just magnifies the struggles and slumps, plus it makes the good games and hot streaks feel like an exercise in futility.

The Cubs are a good team, but this is shaping up to be a year where a great team wins the Central.

I would love to be in the division with the Cubs. You have a team that makes gobs of money but won’t spend, they don’t even bother bidding for the high-end free agents, they think their minor leaguers will contribute more than they ever will, and they almost never pull off big deadline deals. The Brewers gotta be laughing so hard.

I don't disagree.

Cubs feel flat right now.

They've lost 11.5 games in the standings in 7 weeks.

Wonder if they can lose the same in the final 7 weeks?  I have faith in them……

Don't forget the bonus draft picks you get because you're 'small-market,' as every other team besides the Cubs does, while the big-market team simply declines to use the only advantage they have - their supposed ability to spend big money.

Yep, playing .500 ball the last 7 weeks they have lost 11.5 games in the standing because the Brewers have played 23 games over .500 in that time. If they close out at .500 ball the rest of the year they will be fine. Won’t win the division, but they will be in the playoffs. Nothing they can do about the Brewers winning so often except beat them when they play them.

Hard to do, at least

Especially playing .500 ball. Not like the Cubs went 15-27 during that stretch.
When the Cubs were 45-28 ( 17 games over .500, a little more than 7 weeks ago), they had a 6.5 game lead. They have gone 21-21 and lost 11.5 games in the standings. Losing that many games in the standing without actually going into a long losing streak or a long period of sub .500 ball is crazy.

I know.  It's really something else how the Crew just won't lose!  But we currently stand at a 98% chance of making the playoffs.
