Rationally, I know this. And as long as rentals like Kelly, Gallen, Cease, Morton etc are still around the Cubs do have fallbacks. I just don’t understand what would make the price of a controlled pitcher go down. Why would the Marlins, Twins or Nationals lower their price on a guy they can just keep and trade next year? I think the price is set. Do the Cubs want to pay it. Period.

The difference between a top 50 prospect and a prospect outside the top 100.

Jed knows what their return will be if they wait until next year, and that he has to beat it. They want him to beat it by a lot, he wants to beat it by as little as possible.

brinkmanship? the closer you get to a deadline, the closer people are willing to move to their true minimum acceptable price, even if they don't have to get rid of that player by 5 pm

(i do tend to agree that at least this year, we're not likely to see teams move all that much in the final hours before the deadline. but if no one's gonna beat you to the punch for the guy you covet, you might as well exhaust all your options before you finally decide to take the plunge)

Hahn was just asked about Gore for Cassie, Wiggins and Alcantara. He said if he was the Nationals FO he would drive Gore to the airport. Said it was too much. So does something like Horton and Alcantara get him if the Cubs add another young (not too 10) prospect? I think I would do that.

Yankees add Jake Bird, who I had my eye on. They give up Ben Shields, a 26 year old lefty, and Roc Riggio, a second baseman hitting well in AA and a member of the great names HOF.

Not a HOF name. A BobsonDugnutt SNES name.

I've always complained that Jed is too cautious overall.  I'm really hoping he has one big move to prove me wrong, and that his extension isn't the biggest news we get

I would. Jack Neely would fit that third piece just fine. Because I tend to think of 25 as quite young.

In fact in more likely he will not be here next year than he will.

Don't wait so long on the controlled SPs that the rentals are all gone...

See, I kind of find it exciting if Kelly, Cease, Gallen, etc. are off the board because that means Jed has a big fish and it's close enough to done that he sat out the rentals.

Wonder if the Rockies will also trade Halvorsen.

The Rockies are notorious for keeping quiet at the deadline. The fact that they traded McMahon was kinda surprising.

Do the Cubs have another prospect named Horton? If not, the Cubs don't trade Cade Horton for Gore.

Yep, that's why we go for it now. Top 3 team in the NL despite the shaky rotation...

Are there any actual big fish beyond Gore and Ryan?

Edward Cabrera and frankly I'm getting pretty close to putting Sandy Alcantara back on that list.

No Cubs fan has any business being this optimistic. Time to lower your Xanax dosage.
