We probably offered something like the Colt Keith contract and he wanted Jackson Merrill money. 20-30M?

His family's got that sweet sweet Little Big League residual money, so there's no need for him to lock in financial security

I miss the game and see the score and check the box score hoping the two guys that mashed today would have been Happ and Shaw.

Muncy is out for at least 6 weeks too, so add the Dodgers to the mix.

Good point, and the rest of the 'available' 3rd baggers don't thrill me at this point either. Suarez is the crown jewel  and it'll take a lot to get him.

Is Suarez not a rental?  Shouldn't take a whole lot, if Arizona moves him, it's going to come down to which set of lottery tickets they prefer.  I don't think they'll be able to get any major league ready talent for him.

Teams in the bottom half of 3B performance with playoff aspirations: Detroit, Yankees, Phillies, Mets, Brewers, Cubs. Toss in the Dodgers without Muncy. In terms of options, it's Suarez and then a fairly significant drop off. Six or seven teams bidding for a rental can still get pretty expensive.

I haven't seen this mentioned so assume this is a bad idea, but would we be open to taking Eduardo Rodriguez or Lourdes Gurriel off their hands as a sweetener? Eduardo would solve the innings eater side of the equation but we'd also owe him $40m over the next two years. Gurriel gives us a bench bat but not much else and has a player option for $14m next year. I'd guess both of those contracts are underwater at this point, Rodriguez more than Gurriel.

If the Cubs are going to take on a pitcher with a big multi year $ commitment, I'd prefer Nathan Eovaldi, even at his age.

Regarding Suarez, the Cubs will have some competition for sure, but they have the most they can give up.  Out of the teams that'll be interested in him, they have the best farm system.  Also don't think the Dodgers will be in on Suarez when Muncy is only gone for 5 or 6 weeks.  I can see the Yankees and Mariners having interest.

Unfortunately, I think Jed and co have the same thoughts as many on here.  No need to get a guy with a .560 OPS out of the lineup when they already have a top 3 offense and he's a top prospect.

Good post re. Eovaldi, but they COULD go after someone like Morton of the O's. Wouldn't cost much and the birds are gonna be dumping salary. I like the idea personally:

LeMahieu was released, don't know why the Cubs can't pick him and give a few games at 3B.  He did play 3B a decent number of games in 2024 hell, if they're willing to give a Lopez a chance, might as well take a flyer on LeMahieu.  Such BS has worked for the Brewers and Vaughn, don't know why it can't work for a few games with the Cubs.

I don't see why not either. Worth a flyer, he has some skins on the wall.

I mean they've played Nick Lopez and Brujan at 3B, LeMahieu' probably a tick or two better.

Quite possibly, and sometimes a vet like DJ can get a second wind with a team like the Cubs. Things had grown stagnant for him in NY.

D.J told the Yankees he couldn’t play 3rd. That is why he hasn’t been there all year. He said it was too much for him. Otherwise, I would agree.

Besides that, Yankees picked up Candelario on a minor league deal and cut DJ. If people didn’t like Candelario how can they like DJ?

If you dont see a kid pressing when hes hitting, I dont know what to tell you.

That awesome he had 2 good AB in the last week but what about all the others, I forgot, bad luck.

Shaw has very likely been unlucky that all his terrible contact hasn't resulted in more of them falling in for hit.  That said, he's still hitting badly.

Problem is there's nobody better to replace him with.  I don't think it will do much of anything to demote him.

The Cubs lost several games last season based on the bad performances they got out of the 3B and catcher spots.  If Shaw doesn't start hitting by the deadline they need to acquire someone, maybe even sooner   They're at -0.5 WAR out of 3B this year.

You can leave a rookie out there struggling for a few months but at some point you've got to worry about winning.  Brewers are on their heels, and the playoffs is no place for development.  Jed's job is also on the line, I'd be more worried about getting in the playoffs if I were him.

I don't see how Ohtani doesn't win it unless he gets hurt. Although, if PCA wins it, my bank account gets richer

The pitching should help Ohtani add a bit of value in the 2nd half.  I hope PCA wins.

That's why I think a Willi Castro type would be a good fit. This team needs a better hitting bench guy who could technically play every day. He can play every position, spelling people where needed and allow Shaw to continue developing at the major league level. Brujan is just a waste of a roster spot. Berti isn't much better. Minnesota seems to me like a perfect trade partner for a SP, RP and a utility guy, not necessarily in that order, but also possibly filling all 3 needs in one trade.

I agree, they can supply one stop shopping. The problem is, I doubt they feel they are out of it right now. I realize they are 4 back and have a lot of teams to get past. But every FO wants to believe they still have a chance only being 4 out.
