Rose may have been a scumbag, but there are plenty of those in the HOF. If we are putting guys in based on what they did as a ballplayer, without cheating the game by taking enhancement drugs, he belongs I. The ball.

But does he belong in the HOF for have sex with a minor? He was a pig of a man, who shouldn’t be honored like this. I guess the one saving grace of this decision is he isn’t alive to enjoy it.

I don’t want you to think I am having a go at you. What that “man” did just hits close to home for me and many other people. horsefeathers him. I hope he never gets in.

Shoeless Joe also now eligible.

The “integrity of the game” argument against Rose took a huge hit when MLB and frankly all the leagues went all-in on partnering with gambling entities like FanDuel and Draftkings.  I’m not saying gambling is something terrible in itself but that argument no longer makes much sense to me.

The commissioner’s argument that Rose is dead so he no longer poses a threat to the integrity of the game is BS because of Shoeless Joe, who has been dead since 1951.

I just think the stench of hypocrisy from MLB on this is overwhelming.

This is 100% because professional sports are so hopelessly entwined with gambling now; between subscriptions and ticket prices and gambling apps, they're just trying to capitalism their fanbase into oblivion. The enshittification continues because why not.

Word of the day.

As a couple people have pointed out, this doesn't mean he automatically gets in. The same writers who keep the steroid guys out may well decide to keep these guys out.

It's not just the writers. He'd be on one of the Veterans Committee ballots. Those committees are usually a mix of players, front office, and writers.

Yeah, I saw that after making the post. He's actually not eligible for the writers' ballot because it's been over 15 years since he retired, so he goes straight to the Eras Committee people, as do all the other people that are now eligible.

Baseball Frees Its Gambling Ghosts | Defector

Quote

Manfred is not only playing to the President and Pope, but to his newest business partners, the gambling industry. It is an awkward thing to be in business with gamblers on one hand and banning them with the other, and as a result Manfred has been trying to thread a needle with a rope on that relationship, which is essentially the sport's relationship with/shunning of PEDs. The question underlying all of it is always "Is the money coming in or going out?" Frankly, it is remarkable that Manfred restrained himself from making Arnold Rothstein eligible for the Hall of Fame too, given that the mobster famous for bringing illegal narcotics to America and fixing the 1919 World Series was also 110 years ahead of his time with the concept that eventually became DraftKings. Now there's an ad to play in the middle of a Reds-Cardinals rain delay—an AI version of the late Michael Lerner oozing out prop bets on Nick Lodolo strikeout totals or Lars Nootbaar extra-inning RBIs.

"Don't meet your heroes" is a commonly repeated phrase for a reason.

In a somewhat related story, Vince Coleman's abandoned biological daughter that he had from an affair has been on TikTok talking about what an awful person he was/still is.

Players and managers still cannot bet on baseball. That has not changed.
