Speculation from Jesse but certainly doesn't sound great:

I have a difficult time trusting Jesse because of his days covering the Blackhawks. He’s a boob.

He is an idiot but he's well sourced.  So reporting I tend to trust him on opinions I tend to roll my eyes at.

Never is a minimal stay, maybe this could be a blessing and force Hoyer/Ricketts to make a move sooner rather then later for a quality starter.

Hopefully Steele will be back before June

If he misses substantial time, it has no chance of being a blessing. Period! The price of a top pitcher goes up due to need. And the Cubs don’t appear to even want to pay whatever was originally suggested.

@Stratos I'll panic a bit now. And probably should have been more concerned earlier.

I just took a xanax!

What i didn't know is that they're saying this is the 3rd time he's dealt with his issue (since last July per reports).  Wonder when the other time was?

From the horse's mouth below.  Counsel is saying it's the same injury as last Sept (tendonitis) so the 2nd doc opinion is more like due diligence since it's a repeat injury:

Counsell also said Assad makes his first start in Iowa on Tues and Tyson Miller is very close to Iowa rehab also.  Said Brasier has been throwing.

I get the panic. But in this case the mri must have come back without showing additional damage. That is actually good. Steele wanting a second opinion suggest he is frustrated because this keeps happening. So he wants to make sure it isn’t serious. Has it come back bad and he wanted a second opinion I would be more concerned. Maybe another opinion or Wray does show something more. It is possible. But right now it is still just what he had last year.

At least its early in the season, if its worst case scenario he should be back next year. I like our depth and we have the pieces to acquire a frontline starter at the deadline.

The concerning part to me is that the tendonitis keeps lingering and that’s an issue that is difficult to get rid of. It requires rest, so there’s no pitching thru it and no real timetable. You just return when the symptoms subside. That it keeps reappearing suggests this is something he may have problems with for the remainder of his career. Unless a pre-start routine can be implemented to lessen the strain on his elbow.

My thought was maybe he has to do something different in getting himself ready. Like you said, his pre start / off day routine.

The athletic article made it sound like it’s almost certain that he’s going to need surgery

Didn’t see that. If that is the case then the Cubs aren’t being honest about what the first examination showed. Not sure how they can say it is the same as last year and they are just being over cautious about it and then also suggest surgery is a certainty. Have to admit, it makes more sense that Steele would want a second opinion had the first one resulted in the conclusion surgery was necessary. It just didn’t seem like that was what the Cubs were saying. 🤷 Guess we have to wait in the second opinion, but it does not sound good, at all.

I didn’t get that impression from the article at all. A possibility, perhaps, but I didn’t read it as almost certain. What parts of the story made you feel that way?

Everything screamed it.
