The Bears have quite a few former QBs on the staff. Ben Johnson was a walk-on QB at UNC. Randle El and JT Barrett were Power 5 college QBs. Their Asst QB coach was a college QB. But none of those guys took any NFL QB snaps. It's one thing to have a guy tell you how to do things, who is paid to do that. It's another thing to have a guy tell you how to do things as he's doing those things himself.

I just don't get the rumors of the Bears taking a TE at #10 unless they're convinced he's an immediate top 3 TE in the league. There's so many more positions of larger need that they'd have to be a far superior prospect for me not to dislike it.

I would be thrilled with Tyler Warren at 10. Hoping for Campbell or Warren. If Johnson feels confident that Jeanty is the guy, I can get on board. I don’t love any of the defensive players that are likely to be there at 10, assuming Hunter, Graham, and Carter are off the board.

Why would he have to be top 3? Seems arbitrary and an unnecessary requirement.

they need impact players. A tight end can impact

Because if he's a borderline top 10 player at his position, he's basically Kmet.

You think they would draft a QB at 10 that they don’t believe is better than Kmet? Kmet is a borderline top 20 TE based on last year’s production. If they love Warren and want to move on from Cole after this year, I’m all for it.

He could be the BPA at 10.

So if not top three then only top 10?  There’s room for 2 TEs in an NFL offense. He could be better than Kmet and the two of them could be a great tandem for a year or two and then leave open possibility to move on from Cole as he gets closer to 30.

there’s no reason why TE should be off the table

I never said it was completely off the table, I said  they had better view him as a significantly better player than the others available at positions of significantly more need.

Which positions do you have in mind? I’m assuming OT and DL? If so, curious who you like on the defensive side. I haven’t seen a compelling case for anyone on the DL likely to be there for us.

DL, EDGE, OL, RB, Safety off the top of  my head

Do you have DL/EDGE prospects you like in that range? Re: safety, Starks and Emmanwori seem to only make sense in a trade down scenario.

I’d be fine with Jeanty, but TE is a better bet long term than RB.

They’re in a spot where they can go BPA (aside from QB), but I’d prefer they keep piling up talent on offense. Give Caleb and Ben as much to work with as possible.

I'm all for BPA to an extent, but if it's one guy at a position of need who is a big upgrade over what they currently have versus a guy they like only a little more at a stronger position, I say take the bigger upgrade over the current personnel. Obviously if they consider one guy in a completely different tier than the others available then screw position and just take BPA.

So there’s no one in particular you like at DL/Edge?

No one I'm particularly in love with that is going to make it to 10 like Carter or Graham. I do have Walker above the rest of the pack, but not by a whole lot.

He seems to be a step above Williams/Stewart/Green, but doesn’t have the size Dennis Allen seems to look for in his edge rushers.

Maybe a trade down is possible if Poles/Johnson feel their isnt much of a dropoff at say 17 instead of 10?

*Assuming Jeanty and Warren are gone

This is kind of where I'm at. Trade back to 16 or 17 and pick up one of a handful of guys that should still be there.

Just going off the draftnik stuff I've seen, I'd be quite happy with Warren or Loveland. The latter has been showing up in mocks quite a bit recently since he's a more capable outside receiver who can beat man and play as a true Y in-line (a bigger Sam Laporta w/ better blocking). I really like Derrick Harmon too - I've been biased ever since I heard Nate Tice compare him to prime Akiem Hicks. He's got unreal size and is valuable in both the run & the pass. Poles will love those measurables. If there's no trade down opportunity - I'd rather take that than gambling on a Shemar Stewart. There are several projected Dennis Allen type edges at picks 39 & 41. Landon Jackson, Bradyn Swinson, JT Tuimoloau, Jordan Burch, etc...

They can take RB with the other 2nd rounder or wait and grab whomever is best at 72 e.g., Dylan Sampson, DJ Giddens, RJ Harvey, Bhaysal Tuten, Damien Martinez, Devin Neal, etc...

It was mentioned awhile back, if the Bears would reach on a RB and it's a guy they just had in for a top 30 visit in Omarion Hampton. That would be my one of my least desirable moves if they stick at 10.

They still need to look at these guys in case they do end up trading down. I wouldn't hate it if they dropped back 5-10 spots and secured an extra pick or two. It will be interesting to see who drops to 10 that another team may covet.

I'm on the fence about trading down from 10.  If they can pick up a future 1st or 2nd, that's one thing, but getting a few Day 2/Day 3 picks in what seems to be a decent draft isn't a particularly exciting proposition.
