Screw the bench pay for premium relief and Flaherty

If we assume they have about 40m after trading Belli then that's enough for Kelly, a good late inning guy, and a SP.

They might go Buehler- level on the SP and go after an extra reliever, a lefty

Somebody give me a counsell batting lineup effective today

Happ and Busch settled in as pretty regular 1-2 by the end of last year. Given that, maybe:

Happ

Busch

Tucker

Suzuki

Swanson

Hoerner

PCA

Amaya/Kelly

3B TBD

This trade is crazy.  I'm enjoying the dopamine explosions.  Celebrate today, go back to realistic brain tomorrow.

What will realistic brain say? I think it is a great deal regardless. Just remember Jed got Paredes For Morel, Bigge and a guy they drafted in the 8th rd. He drafted Smith. There are guys drafted before him and maybe a little after him who, had he taken, he might not have been able to make this deal. To worry about losing Smith, when many previous years they never drafted someone another team would want, is silly to me. The guy had 100 AB after college. What he did proves nothing. Sure, maybe he will be very good. But there is a better chance he never amounts to anything anyone will miss. If anyone criticized Jed for the haul he sent to Houston, they first need to acknowledged the great job he did getting those guys in the first place. And you can even add Wesneski to that acknowledgement of good work as well.

Now I'm thinking they trade for that guy and sign Minter and Robertson. That would be sick.

Yep, I’m so high on Tucker I’m willing to forfeit an entire lineup spot to even the playing field.

Nice. Glad you took it as a joke and didn’t get all angry. We all make mistakes😬

Tucker's 180 wRC last year would have been the second best Cubs offensive performance in the modern era (I'm excluding Ross Barnes hitting .429 in 1876, apologies to the Barnes family). 2001 Sosa and that's it.

2005 Derreck Lee? 170

1998 Sosa? 159

2016 KB? 146

If Paredes played every single game in Houston last year, he would have hit 26 home runs.

Tucker hit 23 in 78 games.

I'm not suggesting the Cubs should not have traded for Tucker and/or have traded away Parades. I was merely referencing the post by Bertz regarding with Paredes' balls in play from last year overlayed at MinuteMaid. Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, Looks like Paredes would've had a whole bunch of HRs just by playing in MM.

I'm sure Tucker will hit with plenty of power at Wrigley or really anywhere.

BTW can we all agree in advance to be chill when Paredes goes nuts in Houston, and to a lesser extent when Bellinger goes nuts in NYC?

If he's going to hit 35 HR in Minute Maid then WTF did we include Cam Smith for?

No that wasn’t a shot. I’m pretty sure what Bertz is referring to and what I am are aligned. He would have hit 26 home runs last year if every fly ball he hit was at Houston’s stadium. Tucker being a lefty and not really taking advantage of the Crawford boxes is just another testament of how good he is and how seamlessly his talent will travel.

Because they wanted more?

I posted something tangential to this in a comment under one of Trueblood's articles but now that this is real I think it's worth thinking about more. If you want to read tea leaves on how confident the team is about extending Tucker, I think there's is a direct correlation between how much multi-year money the team adds from here and how likely it is that Tucker walks.

Tucker and some unlikely Shota option decisions aside, there is no money set to come off the books after this year besides Tucker.  So if the team has real expectations of extending Tucker, they'll primarily stick to 1 year deals aside from Kelly (you always need a veteran backup at C).  Reason being you want to to have some money to spend in addition to a Tucker deal.  So like if Castillo or Flaherty is our next SP that's a bearish sign for an extension, while a guy in his walk year I take as a positive.
