I don’t agree that Hoyer is a mess. He is exploring avenues to improve the team. He is involved in several scenarios. He should be. In years past he was criticized for sitting in his hands and now this year because the Cubs come up in several scenarios you are suggesting he is a mess. No matter what he does he gets criticized. Personally I am glad to hear the Cubs are involved in many things. I do worry about him actually making the right move. But right now I wouldn’t call him a mess.

Josh Naylor is more likely to get moved now right?

They also suddenly look like a great Nico Hoerner fit

Trading two or three of your best hitters with no obvious replacement seems like maybe not a great gameplan

Agreed. I doubt that is what Hoyer does. I don’t have a problem with him being involved in a lot of scenarios. The plan should be to make the team better. There might be several different scenarios to make that happen. I like the fact he appears to be active this off season better than what he did the last few(wait for a player to drop to him and sign that player) But, I agree trading 2 of your best hitters without an obvious replacement would not be a good plan.

Ok, after rereading I do not feel the Cubs roster is a mess. They need to make a few moves and they are a 90 win team. They have enough money to spend and still be under the LT, and enough prospects to trade for major league talent to become that 90 win team. IMO the Cubs have a lot of good players, not average and not great. I am glad to see Jed is mentioned on several players. They don’t have a definite direction on how to make the team better. But it appears they are at least setting themselves up to be able to go with plan A, plan B or plan C and pivot based on what comes available.  I get that looks directionless because you are at the mercy of other teams when talking trades. But I like that better than not heading anything about the Cubs.

am I crazy or didn’t Theo used to talk about the goal being a team that could consistently pump out 95 win seasons and we all agreed that was reasonable with the resources the cubs have

now the goal is 85 with a stretch goal of 90  and we’ve got the most informed posters on this site posting like its their money being spent

This feels like "moving night" for a lot of teams. That's a pretty rapid fire Fried, Eovaldi and Gimenez trade.

If the Cubs are adding a pitcher it will have to be a trade or a risky lower end starter signing. Money is crazy for FA. This contract makes Castillo more desirable.

Edit: did not see the post above before mentioning Castillo.

Check the DiPoto quote above. I don't think they're moving off Castillo.

If they really turned down a Casas centered deal for one of Woo/Miller, then I don’t see us getting a deal done with them.

Would be funny after all these rumors that Jed was afraid to pull the trigger and we end up doing nothing of significance.

That is possible. But I think at the very least the Cubs will come away with Kelly and a starting pitcher. Maybe also a pen arm.

From this WM, I think that's may be the case. I don't believe for a moment the Cubs will finish this offseason with just that thought. I do think they'll do one, very exciting thing. I don't know what it is, but they've been connected with the best traded names. Every one so far, it's feels. I do think they'll get something.

Astros beat writer:

Notable in that he 1) when asked to make a 'bold prediction' says that Tucker will not be in Houston Opening Day 2) uses prospect haul as one of the motivations for that deal

Prospect haul is big. I mentioned it elsewhere, but I think the two teams have a lot of overlap on the types of prospects they like and the skill sets. That might just me be reading things how I want, but the two teams have a lot of overlap; enough that we can go back to Carlos Correa and rumblings the Cubs liked him in the draft that the Astros went a *wee* bit off industry board with that pick.

I'm curious to see if the teams get together. It feels like it'll either be a match made in heaven or in hell.

I hope you are right. Love to see a bat like Tucker and/or an arm like Crochet added to the team.

I would think Shaw has to be in the deal. He seems like a guy the Astros would want. But what else goes. He suggested prospect haul.

If they bring Bregman back they're pretty covered at 2B/3B/SS.  I think they'd be more focused on 1B and the OF.
