I would say barring injury he wouldn't be up until roster expansion. But thats just my guess. I think they are trying to convert him to an OF.

If they are trying to convert him to an OF completely, it's not a high priority for them. He hasn't started in the OF in a game since June 5th, and has only switched there during the game twice since then.

I merged the two threads.

EPatt's bat is probably ready to be called up and he'll likely be called up in September. His defense at second base isn't good and he probably hasn't played shortstop since HS, so that's not happening. It also sounds like the expirement in the OF is over for now because he was even worse there. I could easily see him spending the offseason working on learning how to play CF, though.

Eric has had a nice year. He's hit some HR's, which are very helpful for batting average. He's cut down on his K's, which is very helpful for batting average.

Still, he tends to get discussion because he is viewed as a talented prospect.

But it's also worth keeping his Iowa performance in context.

Batting average-wise, where does he sit relative to the Iowa roster? he's behind: Pie (when there), Cedeno, Koyie Hill, Geo Soto, Micah Hoffpauir, Buck Coats, Fontenot (when there).

The only guys hitting for worse average are Murton (I think), Moore (who's had a really tough year), and roster-fillers like Chris Walker and the like.

Maybe the Iowa Cubs have the best lineup in baseball history. But it's also possible that if everybody else is hitting .320-.380, maybe hitting .295-.300 isn't as good as we normally think? Maybe being the 7th or 8th best hitter at Iowa combined with problem defense isn't good enough to command a regular spot in the majors?

now seems like as good a time as any to bump this :D
Nah, you should have waited nine more days and made it exactly one year between posts. :D

I've always felt he was more deserving of a roster spot than Fontenot. He has more upside than Font. Plus, we have Cedeno that can play 2B and SS.

The odd part in keeping Fontenot over Patterson, assuming that is what eventually happens, is that Piniella apparently thought enough of Fontenot's defense to pull him in the 4th inning of a blowout after he already hit a HR that inning. Of course, Piniella did admit that he completely forgot about that HR, but how can he be that high on Fontenot when he won't even keep him in the game early in a blowout because of his defense?

Heh.. Good call.

Can I bump the thread from last year where I was roasted for doubting Rich Hill too?

I don't think it was his defense considering he's put Fontenot in the game several times this year in close games late. I think Piniella was trying to get DeRosa to start getting out of his slump by getting him an at-bat against a left-hander.

Fontenot actually has grown on me. His OBP is decent, and he can hit for a bit of power. He's a pretty decent pinch hitter/bench player.

I kind of like Fontenot as well. But Patterson is probably a better candidate for that specific job. Fontenot does enough to warrent a spot on a big league roster, but not anymore than Patterson can do.

seemingly the vast majority

I think you're remembering the usual suspects who flip out over everything, both sarcastically and seriously. Most people were rightly pointing out that he obviously wasn't Corey due to his numbers in the minors and that his time in the bigs was extremely limited.

I didn't see much of that, but perhaps I left the thread out of perturbation by then.

You seem to mostly focus on people you disagree with.
