Did Colts fans melt down this much when Peyton Manning sucked his rookie year?

No but they also had a guy in the past named Johnny Unitas and not a putrid history of QB play

There were absolutely insanely bad Peyton Manning takes his rookie year, including that the Colts shouldn't have bothered taking him until they fixed their offensive line.

He had a sub-50 qb rating through three games

Andrew Luck as well, whereas, all the Bears have had is ****** QB play so, I can understand the angst, it's oh no, here we again.  I believe we're going have to be patient, Williams has the tools, unlike Mitch and Justin he hasn't shown problems with processing and has a history of being accurate.

Yea. No one should give up on Caleb. Even if he does have the stink of the Bears QB history behind him.

But it's also okay to admit he isn't even a average QB right now.  The generational stuff set expectations unreasonably high to begin with and he hasn't even been non-generational #1 pick good.

But he has a string of games with a real opportunity to settle in.  Would love a solid 250 yard zero To game in next several weeks (or a couple).

That's how I feel about it too.  He's not showing the inability to make a read and throw quickly.  Also I don't know the specific numbers on his arm motion but he zipped a couple balls with a very quick-looking motion and one of them was without his feet set.  No way in hell Mitch could have done that, and Fields had all kinds of athletic skills but I didn't see that from him either and it's a critical ability, in my opinion.

With Peyton, as late as his 4th season he was still tossing a lot of INTs but he was always north of 20 TDs so that helped calm the masses.

I think his reads could definitely be better.  He's missing some nfl open situations and settling for check downs.  But agreed, it's above the curve for his second nfl start.

I would feel a little at ease about Caleb Williams future if our coaching staff wasn't a dumpster fire handling the offense.

In addition to the OL not playing well, we've seen far better play from Jenkins, Wright and, to some extent, Jones hence, they're capable.  If they start playing we'll see a pick up in the offense.

I think next week's game will tell us a lot.

My initial read is that Sunday was an ouroboros of suck for the offense where multiple issues fed off each other to create a situation where Houston's talented pass rush could fire at will.  The best way to improve the pass protection is don't constantly be facing 3rd and 10+ while trailing in the second half, especially to a defense as good as Houston's.

I don't think that is going to repeat itself every week, and I expect most weeks to look more like week 1 in terms of 2 sacks on 33 dropbacks.

If we do see a repeat against the Colts, my expectations will drop considerably

The lack of a running game contributed.

Maybe the Bears should just close up shop

PFF had the highest rated player in New Orlean's blow out over Dallas as Lucas Patrick with a 97.2

In last night's ATL/PHI game Darnell Mooney had 3 catches for 88 yards and a TD

Guys who look just completely useless on the Bears go to other teams and instantly contribute and many at a high level.

I watched that Mooney TD play and he looked like an absolute stud.

Although another play he quit on his route and it probably would have been another TD.

Was going to say the same. Wasn’t paying close attention and I hear the announcer say “Mooney quit on the route” and wasn’t at all surprised.

The Patrick grade definitely annoys the horsefeathers out of me. I believe he's the highest rated C so far, Mustipher was great last year but IDK about this year. It's irritating. Our offensive staff looks inept but that's usually what happens when a DC becomes HC.

I honestly don't know what being unable to block someone and getting blown up has to do with coaching.  it's probably more about the match up than anything.

Fields is your week 3 QB. Things are looking good for that 6th round pick becoming a 4th.

I'll take any silver linings I can get.

If we have Mayfield, Darnold, and Fields all performing decent/good with new teams I'd say that's a strong indicator that QBs can be ruined by bad organizations.  Which brings up the question:  how many of the Bears' QBs were misses in scouting and how many would have been at least serviceable if not for the ineptitude of the coaching?  With a guy like Caleb, it's hard enough to become a good NFL QB without having to swim upstream navigating terrible coaching and gameplanning at the same time.

Williams offense produces one td in two games, defense makes it hold up for one win

Fields offense produces one td in two games, even better defense makes it hold up for two wins

Obvious conclusion: coaching was holding Fields back?

Mayfield was always solid. The browns talked themselves into solid not being good enough

Given enough playing time we'll see the same issues with Fields and Dalton as we saw with the Bears.  I believe as a Bear, Fields managed a few good games, despite the terrible QB ruining coaching.

And what about Mitch?  What did the superior coaching of the Steelers do for him?
